Take your rubbish home

I live by the sea. My morning walk along the beach today consisted of overflowing bins, tied up carrier bags and tied up black sacks next to bins. I counted 5 disposable BBQs.

I also saw rubbish strewn everywhere, as the seagulls and foxes had an overnight party opening up bags and feasting on the remains.

I love the visitors. I love what they bring to the town. I enjoy seeing the camper vans parked overnight along the seafront. I don't love the vast swathes of rubbish they leave.

If visiting a beautiful tourist place, put your rubbish in your vehicle and take your mess home with you. Particularly if there's no room in the bin. A black sack next to the bin is completely unacceptable when it can easily go home with you.

My council tax is paying to clear up your daily mess.

YABU - there's a reason there's bins.
YANBU - you should leave places as you find them

For all those saying "we need more bins and more collections", exactly how much of the beach or park or mountainside or forest or lakeside should be given over to dumpsters? Remember you'll need them in multiple locations too.

Personally I go to beaches, parks etc to enjoy the fresh air. Not to smell twenty five dumpsters every 200 yards. It will look shite too. Don't forget the lovely smell, sound, and sight of several bin lorries coming to empty them every hour. How relaxing.

Let's keep our nice natural spaces nice and natural, instead of turning them into a small landfill site because you're too fucking lazy to take your own litter home.

onwardandupwards · 26/06/2023 12:02

We went for a walk along Bournemouth beach early yesterday evening and the amount of rubbish, beer/ wine bottles, empty cans left was awful, the bins were also over flowing, there was rubbish everywhere, even a broken buggy just left on beach.

Fightyouforthatpie · 26/06/2023 12:03

YANBU there is no excuse for dumping litter - I never do it and "not enough bins" or "the bins are too full" is such a shit excuse. People who dump stuff are filthy scum.

Some of the responses on this thread really sum up the entitled couldn't give a fuck attitude of so many in the UK these days. I'm currently in a park in a northern European capital city. Its pristine@, the streets don't have rubbish blowing everywhere and there aren't piles of vomit or dog shit to negotiate. It's the same at all of the other major European and Canadian cities I've been to in the last couple of years. Brits are fucking mingers when it comes to the environment they live in. Irresponsible, whining, always someone else's fault and never their own.

Absolutely 💯 true.

Well some of the posters on this thread certainly are, regardless of their nationality.

And an absolutely shit example to their kids.

gogomoto · 26/06/2023 12:06

Bit of both really. The council should be providing more bins, or bigger ones - if there's no room you need to find a less full bin. Remember those on foot, on bikes and motorcycles may not have the capacity to carry the rubbish home though, I would look for another bit but I can't just magic up more carrying space

Eh?

One person can't produce so much rubbish on a day out that they can't shove it in a bag or rucksack, surely?

And if there's more than one person, they can distribute the rubbish between them.

It's just more poor excuses.

Barney60 · 26/06/2023 12:09

We have same here, beautiful river folks come from miles away for the day, we cant park our own cars, they park on double yellows outside peoples houses, the rubbish is unbelievable that they leave, not even left next to the bins provided just left at the riverside.
We had bollards put up to stop them driving over to the river, they just cut them off.
Police after so many complaints have just started to issue parking tickets , on the odd day they come here, the visitors are welcome, their noise and rubbish disregard of parking is not.

I have explained. That I have children with special needs/disabilities. And the struggle I don't need to explain all the sensitive and personal difficulties to you.

There'll be bins at the train station, honestly there's no excuse.

100% this. Lazy and entitled.

They need bins/empty more often at peaks /season times. I don't drive. I would be travelling with at least 4/5 children 2 with disabilities. Last thing I'm going to do is take rubbish with me on a 2hr train journey along with changing trains /buses.

I too have disabled kids, and have 5, and have used public transport. Yet have still managed to bring a bag of rubbish home. Even with all of us buying a lunch in the shop the rubbish hasn't been much more than a carrier bag. Do you not carry any bags at all?

Are you actually saying you'd leave your litter if the bins are full? I really hope not.

We carry the rubbish till we find an available litter bin, be that on the way home or our own bin when we get home.

There is no excuse for leaving litter. None at all.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/06/2023 12:19

We've got a few splash pools/splash parks around us and the amount of people who shove dirty nappies (not in a nappy bag) into an overflowing bin on a hot day is awful.
I've had to email our council a few times about this tbf.

Surely if you buy food out, takeaways etc that you can manage with your children...

Then you can manage bringing the remaining rubbish back.

There is no excuse.

WonderfulUsername · 26/06/2023 12:40

Councils need to start handing out fines for fly-tipping. I'm sure the excuses would dwindle then.

Perhaps the revenue could go towards better refuse collection although even then, people will still find full bins between collections so will need to take personal responsibility.

Okay so let's say that you are the exception to the rule. Do you honestly think that everyone else who isn't in your situation should be able to leave rubbish lying around or balanced on top of overflowing bins?

Gofeta · 26/06/2023 13:06

I hate it, so lazy.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 13:07

The problem here is councils not providing a) enough bins in the right locations b) emptying them regularly enough.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 13:12

For all those saying "we need more bins and more collections", exactly how much of the beach or park or mountainside or forest or lakeside should be given over to dumpsters? Remember you'll need them in multiple locations too.

I'm sorry but this just isnt true. In most areas this is a problem caused by council cost cutting. Its not a big deal to have bins sensitively placed and empty regularly, and combined with encouraging cafes etc to avoid single use serving/packaging people should not need to carry bags of smelly refuse around.

Its a common Conservative party approach to reduce public service provision and you see it in the NHS/with poor condition roads too - simply stop providing public services in a bid to force people to pay for them themselves.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 13:17

Also things like a hot disposable barbecue aren't easy transportable as they can stay hot for quite a while.

TaxDirector · 26/06/2023 13:25

Tourist money doesn't pay for the council tax. If the bins are full, take your crap home.

Of course it does. Tourists invariably pay inflated prices in cafes, shops, hotels, holiday lets & for services, and this is reflected in the business rates paid to the local councils.

Local residents always whinge about tourists even when their livelihood depends on them. Its called "biting the hand that feeds you".

No one likes carrying a bag of yoghurt pots, leftover greasy barbecue food, used paper plates sticky with condiments etc home. Its smelly & invariably leaks inside your rucksack or leaves your lunch bag/picnic bag really difficult to properly clean. There's a balance point - people shouldn't dump litter if bins are full, but a bin shouldnt be left full & unusable for ages.

Then provide facilities people can use. Lots of places do.

Engage with tourists. Work with them to enable people to enjoy themselves without damaging the environment.

Some people are joyless fuckers, you basically just don't want to share your beautiful space with anyone else and think if you make it miserable by banning nice activities you will reduce tourist numbers.

Anyone thick enough to not douse the BBQ well with water, shouldn't be allowed anywhere near one.

Then it's easy enough to dispose of very quickly after.

You shouldn't leave them when they're still hot anyway.
