Just that really, I fancy a couple of the dresses but the prices seem quite low… is the quality not that great?

Not buying as many clothes? Most of us, kids included, have far more clothes than we can ever wear. Buying secondhand? EBay bundles are brilliant for children’s basics. Renting? For very special occasions eg wedding (your own or someone else’s.)

Avoid trends. Rewear what you’ve got: no one needs new summer holiday clothes if the ones they’ve already got fit them. Look after things, even cheap things – don’t tumble dry, pack woollens away in airtight containers, darn and sew rips, repair zips and buttons, take shoes to be reheeled.

First of all, I do buy second hand if I can but my taste is sometimes hard to cater for as is my shape, I'm really quite tall so buying second hand can be difficult. Secondly after being pregnant I've been many different sizes therefore I've had to continuously buy new clothes which is incredibly frustrating because before I was pregnant I rarely bought clothes.

I donate all my clothes including my baby clothes to shelters.

It's nigh on impossible to live a life of buying anything that's not been involved in some sort of way that is considered having terrible practices. Unless you live in the forest and wear clothes made from hemp, I doubt anyone here can cast a stone but what we can do is do our best where and when we can. Sometimes circumstances mean buying cheap.

CableTidy · 26/06/2023 11:55

I've ordered a few times and been disappointed every time even when I've checked reviews. Material seems to always be thin, nylony etc. I'd rather pay more and actually end up with something to wear

MistyGreenAndBlue · 26/06/2023 12:45

Lots of snobbery on this thread.
Leaving aside the ethical conundrum for a moment, I have found that the quality and sizing overall isn't any worse than you find on other clothing sites or the high street. It really isn't. Everywhere is hit and miss, especially the sizing. There are constant complaints on here about high street sizing anomalies. It's the same everywhere, and the quality of clothes both on Shein and in shops is very variable. I've had some terrible stuff from New Look or Next and even M&S and, so far, my few Shein purchases have been fine. Well made and a good fit.
Check the measurements given/fabric content and look at the reviews and you won't do any worse than any on any other online retailer.

Surely people do this anyway? If you don't, then you only have yourself to blame for any disappointment.

As for the polyester argument. Loads of other retailers have the same. Even really expensive ones. Polyester is easycare/non iron. I don't actually mind it for the odd thing. But I'm not a stuck up middle class mummy.

No it doesn't. Do you drink coffee? Use sugar? Eat rice, chocolate etc? What are you posting on?
It's the hypocrisy I can't stand. Don't bash people who want to treat themselves to a few new things as cheaply as possible when it is nigh on impossible to avoid using, eating products that use slave labour. I dont judge because I use a phone, drink coffee by the gallon and have just bought some Nike trainers for my son. That would make me a hypocrite.

No I'm not perfect. My coffee is fairtrade for example but I certainly do my best to avoid the worst abusers of which Shein is probably one of the worst. I also provide financial support to small independent rice and other food producers in the developing world.

No one needs piles of fast fashion that they wear once or twice and then have to be thrown away.

If you want to save a few pennies by supporting appalling humanitarian and environmental practices then that's on your conscience not mine.

ElmTree22 · 26/06/2023 20:35

Stop buying fast fashion!!!!!

Alfiemoon1 · 27/06/2023 19:15

What does the estimated price mean on shein as it gives estimated price for each item then when I go to check out each item Is a different price usually a couple of pounds more expensive

Crikeyalmighty · 27/06/2023 19:19

I do admit I have a black sheer chiffon shirt from them that I use to hide my arms over sleeveless dresses and I love it- quality was fine and it was £12.99

born2runaway · 27/06/2023 22:27

I have a few bits i like from there

I like how you can see photos of real people wearing the stuff

The estimated price refers to the discount vouchers available for orders over a certain amount.

If you order over £60 for example, and you have a voucher for 18% off, it takes a % of each eligible item.
Full price if you don't qualify for the voucher.

JamSandle · 28/06/2023 11:55

Really bad quality.

CoconutDrunk · 28/06/2023 11:59

Can’t say anything about the quality because I have never bought anything from there

but the fact that the working conditions are appalling and that it is one of the worst contributors to fast fashion (incredibly cheap and literally thousands of new items added every day) should be enough to put you off.

Nordicrain · 28/06/2023 12:00

They are massively unethical, i would absolutely not buy from there

No problem. You can find the vouchers you have available in the "me" section of the site. There's usually a few there you can use.

Mercurial123 · 28/06/2023 12:05

Diet Prada on Instagram has an interesting article on Shein

Are Shein clothes any good?
loseridiot · 28/06/2023 12:12

I've bought loads off them over the last two years and have never had a problem or returned anything.

Reasonably priced, great quality, unusual clothes you don't see anywhere else and fast delivery.

Lovely dresses that you don't see on the high street. I generally find the high street uninspiring and expensive.

littlemousebigcheese · 28/06/2023 12:12

They have a great plus size section. Unfortunately it's hard to find affordable plus size fashionable clothing so they have a monopoly! It's either £50 sacks from a uk site or SHEIN

WhimHoff · 28/06/2023 12:36

I bought a couple of things to try but the hems were just overlocked so they looked as cheap as they cost.

Minfilia · 28/06/2023 14:05

I’m surprised so many people are saying they are bad quality. I have one shein dress in particular that I’ve worn and washed weekly for the last two years and it’s still in perfect shape, no fading, and looks as good as new. It’s gorgeous actually.

I also have a few other dresses that are fantastic quality.

The quality of primark/boohoo is far worse and I’m lucky to get six months out of their clothes!

Id say 90% of what I’ve bought has been great. Perfect fit, looks nice on (but I’m a typically proportioned size 10 so probably have quite an “easy” shape). I’m tall so I only buy styles that I know will work instead of chancing it.

The other 10% hasn’t looked right, or is not nice quality. I bought a crochet vest top that was absolutely dreadful. No underlining apart from two sewn in white pads so it was completely unwearable.

I also only buy when there are reviews and photos from real people with different body shapes.

(I also think a lot of the time people are buying the wrong styles - of course a dress won’t look the same on your size 16 body as it does on the size 8 model!!)

Completely agree with this.

Jentait1 · 28/06/2023 18:27

I have purchased quite a few dresses, which fit great, quality is good. Blouses are made on small side, order 1 size larger than you normally wear. T-shirts are fine size and price wise.

Don't buy from that crap

I was very anti Shein at first. But then I kept seeing friends in some gorgeous outfits, would ask them where from, and the answer was almost always Shein.

So I decided to take a punt... and I have got to say I've been very pleasantly surprised. The quality is WAY better than I was expecting - especially for the price. Only a few misses. But I've sent them back and recieved my refund prompt.

So, all in all, it's a yes from me.

Yes, one of my reasons for avoiding was ethical' (staff working conditions) - but I'm not convinced that high end brands are immune to this. None of us truly knows.

All that being said, I won't be touching Temu.

Shein is exactly the same as temu.

Shein is exactly the same as temu.

Never said it wasn't. I obviously think they're similar, else I wouldn't have mentioned them. Just that I don't intend to shop from them.
