Are Shein clothes any good?

Just that really, I fancy a couple of the dresses but the prices seem quite low… is the quality not that great?

If you like something search for it on vinted. That way you are not shopping unethically and you are saving the planet from things ending up in a tip. I also donate some clothes to charity when I buy things off vinted to try and offset my shopping a little bit too.

That's a good tip.

If you buy from Shein you are supporting slave labour.

Their workers were found doing 18 hour days with 1 day off a month!

Why would anyone support this?!?!

So sad.

Do people know this and not care, or blindingly ignorant to it?

Softoprider · 26/06/2023 07:46

My experience with this outfit was negative. The clothes were awful, badly made and unwearable. Due to some glitch I couldn't return and am now stuck with rubbish I cannot wear or return so I found them very expensive

InSpainTheRain · 26/06/2023 07:57

I tried Shein and got 2 dresses in 2 different occasions. Bother were awful!
Shapeless, poor quality, poor fabric. Will never be tempted again.

Cos it's only important who a woman is and women's rights only matter when it us, not poor slave labour women who make the shitty clothes we want. Hmm

Sounds about right sadly.

I wonder if those buying clothes from Shein and supporting these awful conditions feel any guilt at all, or whether they're just willing to turn a blind eye for the sake of cheap disposable fashion.

And don't even get me started on the environmental impact of disposable fashion!

MondaysNewName · 26/06/2023 09:50

I don't feel guilty. Those people will have to work like that whatever they are making.

Of course they should have decent working conditions like 9-5 and weekends off etc but whether we buy or not won't affect that.

yellowsmileyface · 26/06/2023 09:54

As others have pointed out, ethically it's not a good company to support.

In terms of quality, it's generally very poor. I got a few dresses from there and the fabric is so thin they're practically see through. They're as cheap as they are for a reason.

(to clarify I shopped from there before I learned of the horrors of fast fashion)

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/06/2023 09:57

There is a cost of living crisis and people are struggling but there is not a huge difference in price between Shein and shops like Primark or New Look and the supermarkets.

So in reality we can all afford to support British minimum wage workers in these stores with UK staff, instead of sending our money directly to China. The Cost of Living crisis is going to get a lot worse for people if we all start buying things from overseas!

so you think it’s ok for a seamstress to get 47c for making that cheap nasty dress you’re buying for your holibobs?

Exploiting poor people to pay them the lowest possible rate, just so you can pay a couple of quid for an ill fitting swimsuit that gets chucked into landfill when you decide that the 10 year old that made it didn’t do a good enough job and return it.

fast fashion is killing the planet and slave labour is making the clothes but who cares eh.

shein is worth $100 billion dollars - it could pay its workers properly but why should it when customers enthusiastically turn a blind eye

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 26/06/2023 10:01

I admit to trying Shein a couple of times despite knowing their background, and everything has been returned. The material on the things I've bought is just awful. I was sucked in by a nice looking dress on Instagram which arrived last week, and I didn't even try it on, straight back in the packet to be returned. Coincidentally there was a lady wearing the same dress at school this morning, and I felt a sense of unkind justification in rejecting it..... awful.

Really good point. We should all buy from
local shops where possible to support the economy - not Chinese websites!

OP, look at the reviews and photos before you buy anything.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 26/06/2023 10:10

Most of, if not all of you will shop at at least one of these retailers.

How do you know that 47c isn't the equivalent of £150? They could be well paid for their economy.

And that makes Shein Ok then does it?

And no. I couldn’t tell you when I last bought one of those brands.

No it doesn't. Do you drink coffee? Use sugar? Eat rice, chocolate etc? What are you posting on?
It's the hypocrisy I can't stand. Don't bash people who want to treat themselves to a few new things as cheaply as possible when it is nigh on impossible to avoid using, eating products that use slave labour. I dont judge because I use a phone, drink coffee by the gallon and have just bought some Nike trainers for my son. That would make me a hypocrite.

I totally agree. I buy from there as they do a good range of plus size clothes that look nice and at an affordable cost.
Many retailers now for plus size are pricey even for the basics and can be frumpy.
I wear the stuff for ages though and find it lasts well. I've had a few bits where the quality isn't as great but I'm better and spotting that online now - it's searching reviews with photos that's the trick!^

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 26/06/2023 10:43

Yes @PeonyBlushSuede it's important to look after things properly so they last! I dont tumble dry anything and I always check reviews/photos. I have 2 children that need clothing and I cannot afford higher end labels (the Nike trainers were a belated birthday gift). I wish I could. I do like Vinted though so I am trying to change my habits. Like I said, it's the hypocrisy that blows my mind.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 26/06/2023 10:45

Saying that, it's the higher end labels that are still fond of using child labour! I was shocked to see M&S on that list.

chocolatemademefat · 26/06/2023 10:58

If you wear a lot of polyester this is the company for you. Cheap and tacky dresses. I bought two before finding out more about the company. Have never and will never wear them.

Absolutely. I've had stuff from Next last nowhere near as long as SheIn

Vinted I struggle cause of sizing. If it doesn't fit or look right on can't just send it back. I do use it for kids clothes though - selling and buying

bussteward · 26/06/2023 11:18

Usedtobechilled · 25/06/2023 22:47

Probably not but what do you suggest the alternative is for people that are struggling? Primark, new look etc are all guilty of bad practice.

Not buying as many clothes? Most of us, kids included, have far more clothes than we can ever wear. Buying secondhand? EBay bundles are brilliant for children’s basics. Renting? For very special occasions eg wedding (your own or someone else’s.)

Avoid trends. Rewear what you’ve got: no one needs new summer holiday clothes if the ones they’ve already got fit them. Look after things, even cheap things – don’t tumble dry, pack woollens away in airtight containers, darn and sew rips, repair zips and buttons, take shoes to be reheeled.

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 26/06/2023 11:24

Total shit quality and sizing. Never again
