How far would you go to accommodate a vegan?

In a few weeks we're hosting a bbq for my Husband's birthday.

We have about a dozen guests coming, one of whom is vegan. As we don't normally buy vegan food I've started looking at what we'd normally buy and what is and isn't vegan. To make sure the vegan has the same variety of choice as everyone else I'm going to have to spend quite a bit on alternatives. As we have the non vegan alternatives we won't be eating the vegan versions, so they'll either go home with the guest or be thrown.

How much would you accommodate a vegan?

Would I be unreasonable to provide vegan burger with vegan cheese, plus bun and nothing else or do I need to go the whole hog and get vegan sausages, vegan condiments and vegan coleslaw?

Ps they are vegan by choice, not for medical reasons

I'm vegan ish.
And really what I'd suggest is just do some veg and salad so that everyone can eat it. It's healthy for everyone and tasty!

I have bbqs a lot with my parents and they're not vegan and it's easy.

Side ideas:
Veg kebabs - stick courgette, onion, mushrooms on sticks and grill them.
Side salad of leaves and dressing.
Chopped tomatoes with basil and olive oil if you're feeling fancy. It goes well in burgers.
Crisps and dips. Like salsa, avocado mash
Houmous and veg sticks

Desert wise we usually have some fruit like strawberries and then Swedish glacé (my mum actually prefers it to ice cream). Or you can do dark chocolate as a dip or sprinkled on fruit.
Or watermelon or pineapple.

Bread buns and ketchup are usually vegan anyway. :)

Just get vegan burgers, for meat substitutes. You don't need any more. And it's the same price if not cheaper :)
If you get vegan burgers, the frozen m&s ones in a pack of four are £2.70 and taste so good. You may even want to try them yourself.

Enjoy :)

I'm vegan ish.

Is that like being a little bit pregnant?!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2023 16:39

I'm vegan ish

AKA an omnivore like most of the population except those who label themselves as 'special'.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 28/06/2023 16:45

I was a little bit puzzled at 'veganish' - somebody who never eats meat or animal products... except when they do?!?!

plantsandwich · 28/06/2023 17:08

I know someone who describes herself as 'veganish'. She says It's booze, sweets etc. She can't call herself vegan because she'll go to any dinner party/pub and drink a glass of wine she's offered without checking it, and same if people offer her sweets/baked goods etc. But she'd not eat eggs, only as a cake ingredient. Not eat meat, but won't avoid sweets with gelatin-same with wine etc. Maybe It's something similar?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 28/06/2023 17:11

Goodness, who knew that 'non-binary omnivegans' existed?!

LaBefana · 28/06/2023 17:14

When I met my DH he told me he was vegetarian, but ate dairy and eggs (like me). He said although he ate eggs, he was uneasy about 'where they came from'. 'What', I said brightly, 'From a chicken's fanny?'. He looked pained and said 'No, from a bird at all. Can we pretend they grow on trees?'. He hates it when they have little bits of feather or blood in them. Doesn't bother me.

Ah, a performance vegan. She wants the cachet of the sacrifice and being seen as 'doing her bit for the animals and the planet' but without all that tedious label checking and missing out on treats. OK then.

She probably has a kebab when she is drunk on non vegan alcohol and a bacon butty as a hangover cure the next day.

Non- vegans can easily eat vegan food. Non vegans won’t feel physically sick at the smell of cooking tofu. They don’t have ethical dilemmas buying oat milk,

utterly bizarre comparisons. On the flip side I will buy and cook meat for DH and DS but DH usually cooks theirs.

once you no longer eat meat it smells like exactly what it is a corpse. Milk always smells sour (well it does to me)

I know a few who went vegan/vegetarian and went straight back to meat cause of the smell. They missed it too much

@Emmamoo89

its not those is it, considering that lots of animals do not
eat meat and have a plant based diet

Yes it is. You need to get over that fact. Most animals eat animals.

Fair enough, roasting flesh makes me want to vomit- each to their own

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 28/06/2023 17:28

A relaxed vegan is another name for someone who is veganish (if you know you know Wink)

Most animals shit where ever they fancy, shag each other without consent, many lick their own asses. I’m not seeing your point

Depends how you measure it of course, but..,, c65% of animals are herbivores

It's not, there's an abundance of readily available data, research, and studies out there that shows that veganism has a smaller impact on the planet in terms of climate, emissions, biodiversity loss, etc.

There are some studies that indicate that in some conditions low intensity regenerative farming using live stock can have positive impacts but in terms of industrial food production meat, especially beef, is almost always worse.

Show me the data then...

And you vegans/vegetarians aren't all perfect. Still has some impact. I'm just sick of the grief we get.

plantsandwich · 28/06/2023 17:30

@BarbaraofSeville Grin I don't think she does that-but who knows.
A 'lapsed' vegan is another term she's used.

You’re sick of the grief you get...yet you’re the one constantly on these threads getting your knickers in a twist. Okay then.

plantsandwich · 28/06/2023 17:32

The only animal-related scent that makes me feel nauseous is fried chicken (KFC, chicken shops etc). I don't know why, but to me it smells similar to excrement. Any other smells don't bother me, so It's not necessarily related to being vegan-just that one smell knocks me sick.

A lot of humans do that too....

Yep and they are castigated/charged with a criminal offence. Because humans are supposed to be able to act better than that. But yes humans still do these things and kill animals (often after spending a life of suffering) and keep them in appaling conditions needlessly

OMG12 · 28/06/2023 17:39

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 28/06/2023 17:29

Some humans eat sausages/ basically the same.

But if people are going to argue gay humans should eat meat as animals go, why aren’t they actually eating their own shit (we will remove most burgers from the argument)

CurlewKate · 28/06/2023 17:39

As I said. I'm not a vegan/vegetarian but I am a massive supporter of vegan/vegetarian cookery
And of people who choose to be vegan/vegetarian as well. But please stop with the roasted flesh thing.

I love animals but I love meat too. We can do both. And not everywhere is bad in this country. I do know, my dad's a butcher. I always go free range. And it's 63% of species that eat meat. Canivory is most common.

Hardly a 'performance vegan' when she doesnt call herself vegan and freely admits to the non vegan products she consumes. Many of us believe its better for health, the environment and animal welfare for people to be vegan most of the time, or even just some of the time, than not at all. Why the need to pull someone down who's at least doing her bit?
