How far would you go to accommodate a vegan?

In a few weeks we're hosting a bbq for my Husband's birthday.

We have about a dozen guests coming, one of whom is vegan. As we don't normally buy vegan food I've started looking at what we'd normally buy and what is and isn't vegan. To make sure the vegan has the same variety of choice as everyone else I'm going to have to spend quite a bit on alternatives. As we have the non vegan alternatives we won't be eating the vegan versions, so they'll either go home with the guest or be thrown.

How much would you accommodate a vegan?

Would I be unreasonable to provide vegan burger with vegan cheese, plus bun and nothing else or do I need to go the whole hog and get vegan sausages, vegan condiments and vegan coleslaw?

Ps they are vegan by choice, not for medical reasons

So one question. If we were all to stop eating meat, what do you do with all of the animals? Cows for example. Cows contribute considerably to the methane content of the atmosphere causing negative effects on the climate of the planet. If we were to release them all, they would continue to breed exponentially and the cow population would explode to the point that the effects on the climate due to the uptake in methane production would become critical and have catastrophic effects on the planet. Therefore to avert complete disaster, we would have to cull the population, further contributing to the "cruelty and murder" that veganism is trying to end.

Really?????!!!!!

We merely quit breeding them. Truly that simple.

Don't bring my fucking kids in to it. But they love meat too. Since weaning age.

It's the natural order of things... organisms breed. Simple...

CurlewKate · 28/06/2023 18:12

@Emmamoo89 Youndo know that many animals are specifically bred for human consumption, don't you?

Letittow · 28/06/2023 18:13

I love animals but I love meat too. We can do both.

No you can't.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 28/06/2023 18:15

I’m at bbq with vegan next week- some veggie skewers, cous cous, hummus, salads etc are v easy. Ask them to bring any protein/meat alternative, they will be used to it and have a favourite.

My daughter can’t have dairy so used to alternatives, it doesn’t have to be difficult or buy anything special.

RecklessGoddess · 28/06/2023 18:16

I would do veg skewers, and the vegan burgers, they can have salad with it too (assuming you are doing salad). At the end of the day, it's their choice to be vagan, and it is very expensive for meat eaters to go out of their way to specially buy vegan food, especially for just one person.

I love animals but I love meat too. We can do both. And not everywhere is bad in this country. I do know, my dad's a butcher. I always go free range. And it's 63% of species that eat meat. Canivory is most common.

Unfortunately the production of meat and dairy inevitably leads to suffering of animals - some less so than others. I would argue we can’t do both. Why would you kill something you love?

As I said, it depends which way you cut the numbers, sheer numbers wise much more herbivores than carnivores.

Yes we can. Because i do. I love animals so much but i also love the taste. And another thing I've been told by vegans that milking cows is raping them. So are we supposed to not do it and allow them to get mastitis. You know what happens then. Sepsis. That kills. So that would contribute to the "murder and cruelty".

Yes. The best way to stop them breeding is to steralise. Or cull the population.

Really?????? We just stop breeding them, we could reduce numbers that way. It would be phased out. If the land was suitable it would be turned over to arable

Yes can do both. Funny that cows are my favourite animal, I also love steak.

Well that's bullshit. What's your source.

Rehashing the same argument because you don't have an answer...

I’m Hindu. I often need to cater for a lot of people who eat vegan for religious reasons. We do this in a way that the vegetarians and meat eaters can also enjoy. So I often make tandoori veg skewers (made traditionally with chickpea batter instead of dairy/yoghurt), falafal, home made tahini, kebabs made from lentils and minced veg, dry veg manchurian. I don’t eat fake stuff and won’t make it for my guests.

Behave, if we didn't inject them full of hormones and stimulate milk production then it wouldn't be an issue, but yes when you push their bodies to the limit and make them produce an unnatural amount of milk whilst attached to man made machines then certainly these things can sadly happen. You can't love animals as an entire group if you'll also happily see them bred and then killed for you to eat; much more accurate to say I love some animals but others I don't feel are as deserving and I don't care about their suffering.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 28/06/2023 18:31

A relaxed vegan is another name for someone who is veganish (if you know you know )

"Yes, I'm a scrupulously honest person, except when I tell lies or steal stuff."

plantsandwich · 28/06/2023 18:41

Jesus wept, seriously do people STILL say this (well, I know they do, I quoted it in a previous comment, silly me).

I wonder why we're not overran with cassette tapes, mangles, ice-boxes, analogue televisions? I mean, we stopped using them didn't we but we used to manufacture loads of them?!! What did we DO with all the ones being created when this stopped!? Why haven't we got piles of them all everywhere?!

Oh yeh. We stopped making them. Such difficulty I had working that out. I must be a genius.

HangingOver · 28/06/2023 18:43

Oh god I'm pretty sure I used to go around saying this too. The cognitive dissonance required for animal lovers to eat meat is strong.

plantsandwich · 28/06/2023 18:43

I don't agree you can love animals and eat them though. 'I love cows but also contribute to their murder'. Nope, that sort of sentence doesn't make sense to me. You can love SOME animals perhaps and not others. But being a general lover of animals doesn't equate with consuming them for your own entertainment.

Fandabedodgy · 28/06/2023 18:45

This thread has got super entertaining now the extremists have joined it.

GettingStuffed · 28/06/2023 18:46

I'd make some bean burgers rather than plastic vegan "beef" burgers . As others have said sides are often vegan anyway..

My DH is vegetarian and would not eat anything cooked on a BBQ that had ever been used to cook meat. Buy a cheap throwaway BBQ for them vegan burger, vegan sausages with buns and kebab made of cherry tomatoes, peppers, chunks of vegan cheese and mushrooms. Plus green leaf salad.

Your DH should buy it. Expecting that degree of accommodation is utterly unreasonable.

randomchap · 24/06/2023 23:40

I'd just do the whole thing vegan. Avoids the issue of having to separate the vegan/non-vegan food.

One of my friends is vegan and when he visits we just go vegan while he's here. It's so much easier not worrying about what he can or cannot have

That is so unreasonable.
