How far would you go to accommodate a vegan?

In a few weeks we're hosting a bbq for my Husband's birthday.

We have about a dozen guests coming, one of whom is vegan. As we don't normally buy vegan food I've started looking at what we'd normally buy and what is and isn't vegan. To make sure the vegan has the same variety of choice as everyone else I'm going to have to spend quite a bit on alternatives. As we have the non vegan alternatives we won't be eating the vegan versions, so they'll either go home with the guest or be thrown.

How much would you accommodate a vegan?

Would I be unreasonable to provide vegan burger with vegan cheese, plus bun and nothing else or do I need to go the whole hog and get vegan sausages, vegan condiments and vegan coleslaw?

Ps they are vegan by choice, not for medical reasons

Corn on the cobs and baked potatoes are amazing on the BBQ, even my omni family and friends enjoy them (the shock and the horror). If a vegan comes to your bbq and has to smell rotting flesh cooking then they must super like you so I'd be flattered by that!

LaBefana · 27/06/2023 20:51

@Letittow

rotting flesh cooking

If it's rotting then no-one ought to eat it, surely?

LuckySantangelo35 · 27/06/2023 20:23

@RedPony1

really? Is it just literally meat?

Well, there will be burger and sausage buns. But yes, no sides! Been to about 8 already this year all like that…

CurlewKate · 27/06/2023 21:29

I go to considerable lengths to happily "accommodate" vegans and vegetarians as I hope I have shown on here. But I do find even I bristle at the "scorched rotten flesh" brigade. Don't do that.

Agreed - it's so childish and ignorant; the equivalent of tiresome meat eaters who find it hilarious to call vegan/veggie-friendly fare 'rabbit food'.

Freshly-killed and refrigerated/frozen meat is not in any way rotten; whereas fruit and veg that has been left out for too long after harvesting and before eating will go rotten. These are facts and entirely unconnected to the question of whether or not any individual would want to eat either of them (presumably before they go rotten) or not.

Who brought up the 'rotten' thing anyway?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 27/06/2023 22:59

Who brought up the 'rotten' thing anyway?

It's a tiresome recurring phrase trotted out by a minority of vegans and vegetarians who are not mature enough to clearly state that they do not eat meat (and or animal products), knowing that everybody knows what their stance is; not a million miles from little kids calling somebody else a 'poo-poo head' when they want to be mean or express a dislike of another child but don't have the vocabulary or ability to be more grown-up about it.

Bet the same ones saying that are the biggest hypocrites wanting to save the dolphins & elephants though, and wouldn’t be projecting the same contempt towards people who were against the dog meat trade…
Yes, I'm.not vegan, not even vegetarian, but have found myself wondering lately why it's seen as Ok to eat some animals but not others.
Eat some, but have others as little pets.

ApplesInTheSunshine · 27/06/2023 11:27

I wouldn’t. If they’re going to be deliberately fussy they can cater for themselves.

Veganism isn't "being deliberately fussy" though.
They literally don't want to eat animals that have been killed for them to eat or any animal products that comes from.suffering such as milk.
How is that fussy?

CallieG · 28/06/2023 05:31

Please don’t go to any great expense.
one thing I don’t understand, Why do vegans Want Meat substitutes, they don’t eat meat so they can have a vegetable burger, some grilled Egg plant, Capsicum & Zucchini. If you do grilled vegetables other people will eat them too so no waste.

Call the vegan person, ask if there’s one dish in particular they would like you to make OR would they prefer to bring their own.

I used to make Chili vegetable burgers. I cook & mash, potato, sweet potato & pumpkin, add some sweet chilli sauce to the mix, salt & pepper. For into burgers then toss in vegan bread crumbs. Cook as you would any burger, serve with mixed roast vegetables & salad.

Many of us don't. But if we remove the narrative that all vegans want special expensive ultra processed fake meat, and acknowledge we would be happy eating the healthy plant based foods the rest are having as sides, then it's one less stick to beat us with. Imagining that we all substitute animal products for artificial tasting unhealthy food with an environmental impact provides an excuse to accuse us of hypocrisy, rubbish our diet, and view meat consumption as the better (essential even) choice.
If we accept that vegans eat a regular diet that merely omits certain foods because of our personal view on the health, ethics or environmental factors, it's far harder to justify framing us as this huge social nuisance.

My son decided 2.5 years ago to become vegan at age 14. Nobody else in the family is vegan but everyone accommodates him, even my elderly granny always has snacks when we go and visit.
We had an unexpected tea at a friend's the other day and she cooked pizzas for everyone from the freezer and my had beans on toast and he was very happy with that! I hear so many negative comments about vegans, my son actually kept it quiet as we are in a rural area and some of the children in his year say things like Vegans should be shot and beaten up.
My son does enjoy the 'fake meat' from time to time. He actually loved the taste of meat, just doesn't want to eat dead animals.

My sons feelings exactly. The pigs, sheep, cows etc all have families, feelings, relationships....
I'm sure many of us would think differently if we actually saw the whole process of meat production.

I wonder if the vegans go to the same amount of effort when they're hosting non-vegan guests, or is it a case of Tough, eat what I provide?
At least the OP is expecting a vegan, we found at 10 pm on a Saturday night when she arrived that the French exchange girl was vegan, this was about 25 years ago when I'd never even heard of vegan! Later found that she'd decided to be vegan on the ferry from Calais, she wasn't a vegan at all. Never been so glad to say Bon voyage when she left!

Do non vegans require a lot of effort? Are there any who for health or ethics will only eat foods containing animal products? Who scour the labels on food to ensure it contains at least one of meat, fish, egg or dairy? Who if faced with a meal containing no animal products would rather go hungry?

Exactly- some of the animals we eat are intelligent- pigs are, what are they feeling when dragged off to slaughter or the see their offspring dragged off. Yet they have greater intelligence than a dog or 3 year old child.

People need to understand animals aren’t just inanimate objects. Crows for example have the intellectual capacity of a 7year old child.

Cows are intelligent creatures capable of complex social behaviour yet we use them like slaves, drag away their young to keep filling bottles of milk.

Deep down many know it’s wrong but don’t want to give up things they love to eat so criticise vegans instead.

Curious Questions: Are cows actually super-intelligent? - Country Life

Far from being ‘stupid’ or ‘silly cows’, cattle are clever and emotionally intelligent, with bags of personality, too, says John Lewis-Stempel.

Non- vegans can easily eat vegan food. Non vegans won’t feel physically sick at the smell of cooking tofu. They don’t have ethical dilemmas buying oat milk,

utterly bizarre comparisons. On the flip side I will buy and cook meat for DH and DS but DH usually cooks theirs.

once you no longer eat meat it smells like exactly what it is a corpse. Milk always smells sour (well it does to me)

JenJuni · 28/06/2023 11:27

I think it’s usually less expensive than meat?
I’m not vegan but I am grateful to them as they’re helping the planet in ways I ought to be, and not hastening our impending doom like us meat eaters ;-)
If you can afford it, I’d get her a sausage too and let it go. If you can’t, I do think it’s OK to ask her to bring any extras she’d like. I’m gluten free and I don’t mind doing that.

Imdonewithsergio · 28/06/2023 14:25

Not vegan but one of my kids is dairy and egg free. Things like corn on the cob (without butter), fruit kebabs, tortilla chips and salsa etc are easy vegan friendly things that won’t go to waste as everyone can use them. “Accidentally vegan”.

Watch out for some tortilla chips if flavoured some have milk powder- I made this mistake once- paid for it by being violently sick!

Oh I should have said to stick to plain. I know I can’t have the cool original ones as they have milk.
