To be angry with the Arctic Monkeys?

Dulra · 24/06/2023 08:11

Last night the Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury. Three days earlier they were due to play a sold out gig in Dublin but cancelled it the day before stating the lead singer Alex Turner had laryngitis. He sounded pretty pitch perfect last night 🤔

The gig in Dublin sold out in minutes last September. My dd was due to go and was really upset and disappointed. She has just finished her state exams and had been really looking forward to it. Many people lost money in their bookings for hotel rooms, buses, trains because they cancelled so late people couldn't get refunds.

I just think it is so disrespectful to your fans but obviously the notoriety of Glastonbury is more important to them then their Irish fans. I certainly wouldn't book to see them again.

I'm angry with the Arctic Monkeys because I thought their Glastonbury set started off well and then nosedive to dreary. Unfortunately, bands cancelling is a thing- try not to book non-refundable transport and accommodation. If you're really pissed off, stop buying their music and merch.

sashagabadon · 24/06/2023 13:25

Glastonbury sells out before headliners are even announced so they’ll be no one at Glastonbury that could argue they’d bought a ticket just to see them but agree for bands worldwide kudos and exposure ( if you do a great set) is infinitely more than any other gig.

YANBU.
Alex Turner is a rabid DUP supporter. This was purely to spite the Republic.

AT was ill. He was obviously well below par at Glastonbury. They made the wrong call to do Glastonbury, he needs more rest.

No, they will have made the right call. Cancelling Glastonbury would have cost them a shit ton of money in paying comp to the festival organisers.

It's a business, they don't sign up to play big festivals just coz.

Each band/performer will have a tailored contract dependant on:

Place in lineup
Expected ticket sales

And if they don't show up, a financial penalty to pay to the festival.

People do that because Glastonbury have built a rep. This is based on booking and delivering top/current acts in the industry.

Yes the bands get kudos but once they've signed that contract they're tied in concrete style otherwise they pay through the nose.

Works the other way too. If glasto bumped them down the lineup of cancelled them altogether glasto would have to comp the band.

Willmafrockfit · 24/06/2023 13:33

i read they did some newer numbers which led to the crowd being unenthusiastic

Absolem76 · 24/06/2023 13:34

Perhaps he is better now? It's not his fault he lost his voice, presumably after resting it for a few days he can use it now.
Bands don't cancel unless they have no choice

MayThe4th · 24/06/2023 13:38

My DS works in the industry and he said this is really common. The gig he worked on this week was also cancelled for the same reason.

Basically if they have a gig that week there’s a high chance of it being cancelled because they will be told by management to rest their voice.

It’s unlikely he was really ill but he won’t have been able to pull out of Glastonbury whereas disappointing a few thousand fans is sadly par for the course in the industry.

Obviously acts do fall ill and that can’t be helped, but the fact they do makes it all the more easy to claim illness to rest your voice.

I had a conversation with a friend this week along these lines. There is a noticeable Glastonbury gap in the Taylor Swift European dates next year so the Wembley dates might be vulnerable to a similar situation.

It was Royal Blood who had to follow the Foos, which was pretty funny given their twattery at the Big Weekend.

What happened with Royal Blood at the Big Weekend?!

Oh, they were apparently surprised to find that the crowd was mostly teenage girls who were there for the pop acts, called them ‘pathetic’ and stuck their middle fingers up at them as they left the stage. Their set ended up being pulled from the BBC coverage.

Thanks! That's appalling of them!
I quite like their sound and vaguely follow them but I missed all that. I watched some of the Big Weekend coverage on TV (I have family in Dundee and know Camperdown) and wondered where their set had gone!

chemistnightmare · 24/06/2023 16:24

They were pissed off because they got moved slot as well due to Niall Horan running late as well, so they went on already in a mood. They were supposed to play just before Lewis Capaldi which I expect they would consider a better slot than the one before the penultimate.

Maddy70 · 24/06/2023 16:34

You could tell he was staying mid range. He's normally reaching a much larger range he slowed a lot of songs down too.

Oh dear.

I'd have thought they'd have been well received by the crowd regardless, their hits are pretty memorable. Were they annoyed by the lack of crowd recognition? Too much of a young, townie crowd not RB fans exclusively? That's what you sign up for with Big Weekend 😂

Sorry for the thread drift!

Interesting. It cames across as shite on the telly, and I wondered how it would be actually onsite at Glasto. There didn’t seem to be much crowd noise, which is really unusual for a pyramid headliner, and there looked to be decent numbers too.

The crowd was really flat, nobody singing along to most songs as they’d reduced the tempo to all the songs so much it felt really odd. Barely any clapping afterwards and lots of people leaving throughout the set (not something that’s happened with the other pyramid stage acts). There actually seemed to be absolutely nothing wrong with his voice. He did come across as a boring bastard with a massive ego though. Changing lyrics to drop Sheffield dialect etc… yawn. Singing in this weird theatrical way which everyone was a bit confused about.

I don’t understand why people buy non refundable hotel rooms and train tickets for events that might be cancelled.

Because the difference between them can be hundreds of pounds?

I always buy knowing if something is cancelled I would still use the hotel/trains and just do something else in the area. I love a wee night away though!!

James has cancelled a gig twice on the day of the gig after travel and check-in at hotel, so didn’t matter whether pre-booked or not - sometimes too late to have a B-plan

Hintofreality · 24/06/2023 17:06

They did you a favour cancelling, they were bloody awful last night.

nancy2022 · 24/06/2023 17:15

They would have been better singing all their old stuff and only a couple of their newer songs.

anthonybourdainsfurrowedbrow · 24/06/2023 17:20

I do wish the tiresome 'bands cancel for any reason they like' rhetoric would stop circulating on these threads.

An act cant cancel a show like that. They are contractually bound to perform or will be sued shitless by the promoter who pays for the show to run. The only exception to this would be a proven illness which an insurer would need proof of.

Stop using Spotify. Start buying records and merchandise again. Do more to support your favourite band, otherwise its no wonder they tour themselves to exhaustion just to make a living.

Caramelatt · 24/06/2023 09:45

Foo fighters are all screaming though, no Nirvana so don't think other bands have to worry about comparison.

I love the Foos but was trying to work out whether they’d down tuned half a step some didn’t seem in quite the right key so they sounded a little weird at times

IheartNiles · 24/06/2023 19:59

Foos were bloody magnificent by comparison. I wouldn’t have wanted to follow them. The crowd was enormous and Dave Grohl had them in the palm of his hand. Foos seemed so happy to be there, the energy was infectious. Contrast to miserable up his own arsehole Alex Turner. FF much more famous too. AM drummer very very good though.

Willmafrockfit · 24/06/2023 20:24

i just read that lewis capaldi struggled to finish and needs to rest his voice also

shortsaint · 24/06/2023 21:05

You do know that when you buy a ticket for a gig you can purchase ticket insurance don't you? It's hardly anything so you might as well do it if you're concerned.

I thought AM were great. Let them play the new stuff, it's good. They have a wide back catalogue so should be able to pick and choose. If you really want to enjoy them, listen to the new albums. I've no sympathy with the moaners.

No doubt the Dublin date will be rescheduled.

His tics juts got worse as he went on. I'm wondering if he felt he had to be there because the penalty for cancelling would have been too much. He has been struggling a lot recently
