To be angry with the Arctic Monkeys?

Dulra · 24/06/2023 08:11

Last night the Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury. Three days earlier they were due to play a sold out gig in Dublin but cancelled it the day before stating the lead singer Alex Turner had laryngitis. He sounded pretty pitch perfect last night 🤔

The gig in Dublin sold out in minutes last September. My dd was due to go and was really upset and disappointed. She has just finished her state exams and had been really looking forward to it. Many people lost money in their bookings for hotel rooms, buses, trains because they cancelled so late people couldn't get refunds.

I just think it is so disrespectful to your fans but obviously the notoriety of Glastonbury is more important to them then their Irish fans. I certainly wouldn't book to see them again.

We saw them at the beginning of the month. DD(16) has loved them forever and said last night how gutted she'd have been if she was due to go to the Dublin show.
I said imagine paying all that money to hear that he wasn't 100%. You'd be gutted and as someone else said, he could potentially cause further and worse damage.
They'll tour again. They'll go to Dublin again and she'll go and have the best night.

anyolddinosaur · 24/06/2023 11:44

Probably should have pulled out of Glastonbury because he hadnt actually recovered.

I also don’t understand why Glastonbury is more important to them than their personal gigs.

So many seem to cancel their personal gigs which their favs have paid to see them specifically but play for Glastonbury which they may not have many fans at.

Contracts and penalties I suspect.

They will have a lot more control over their own shows - well their management will have. Less so with festivals, especially large scale Ines like Glastonbury.

Don’t be upset. I’m at Glastonbury and watched them live. They were absolutely shit, zero atmosphere whatsoever.

Interesting. It cames across as shite on the telly, and I wondered how it would be actually onsite at Glasto. There didn’t seem to be much crowd noise, which is really unusual for a pyramid headliner, and there looked to be decent numbers too.

Wtf happened to his accent? He thinks he's some sort of northern Elvis now??

No, a Northern Elvis would have charm and charisma

AllyCart · 24/06/2023 12:01

If they hadn't performed at Glastonbury would you have been happy?

Maybe happy isn't the right word but perhaps OP would have been more accepting/understanding of the Irish gig cancellation.

OMG12 · 24/06/2023 12:05

They’re getting absolutely crucified on line. It was boring, had zero energy, let’s hope GnR bring the goods tonight

Naooomz · 24/06/2023 12:06

My son travelled to Sheffield to see them. Loved every minute. Also has tickets for Glasgow and is keeping his fingers crossed they don’t cancel and that AT hasn’t messed up his voice at Glastonbury. He’s a huge fan and would be gutted if they cancelled. Also feel your pain as it was me that was on my phone for 2 hours getting the tickets.

WaltzingWaters · 24/06/2023 12:07

fine to cancel when you’re genuinely unwell and can’t perform. But they really should postpone and put the gig on at another time. I would be annoyed it was cancelled altogether.

Fightyouforthatpie · 24/06/2023 12:08

I can't imagine devoting so much time, money and headspace to any popular beat combo TBH so YABU.

You can’t imagine empathising with your disappointed child when a long-awaited event is cancelled?

mummyh2016 · 24/06/2023 12:19

anyolddinosaur · 24/06/2023 10:35

You'd like someone to permanently ruin their voice so your kid wasnt disappointed. Teach your child health is important and other people have rights too. They tried not to disappoint a lot more people by playing Glastonbury when they probably should have cancelled that too.

I don't think that's fair.
A quick google tells me the Dublin venue holds 40,000. That's 40,000 people left disappointed. There wouldn't have been 40,000 people who booked Glastonbury just for the Arctic Monkeys so in terms of numbers then yes you'd like to think Dublin should've been prioritised however as we know it doesn't work like that. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect those 40,000 fans in Dublin to be annoyed they've been well enough to perform a couple of days after their gig was cancelled. Even though it does sound like OPs daughter had a lucky escape!

CurlyTandtheTangles · 24/06/2023 12:23

AT was ill. He was obviously well below par at Glastonbury. They made the wrong call to do Glastonbury, he needs more rest.

Talk about misrepresenting what I wrote.

aSofaNearYou · 24/06/2023 12:30

I know what you mean but you just don't know how ill he was or wasn't, it's impossible to know if you aren't him.

CrackerAndPudding · 24/06/2023 12:38

Oh wow Fightyouforthatpie you're so edgy and cool. Hopefully OPs daughter grows up to be individual with superior taste like yours so that in future she can post witty remarks on threads about disappointed kids instead.

LookItsMeAgain · 24/06/2023 12:44

ShiteRider · 24/06/2023 08:37

Sounds like he’d had it for a while and had to rest it so that it would recover so I don’t think your statement about not recovering in 3 days is fair really.

Not that I particularly like him or them, and I do feel for your daughter.

This is in response to the comment that @ShiteRider made about not recovering in three days (and this is taken directly from the NHS site):

"The hoarse voice and speaking difficulties usually get worse each day you're ill and may last for up to a week after the other symptoms have gone."
(taken from this page)

I'm going to lob that singing difficulties would also be covered by the above.

If there was professional diagnoses of laryngitis for the lead singer of this band then it is highly likely that he still had laryngitis at Glastonbury and was still recovering from it. It's not something that you recover from in 3 days.

I'd also like to add that #ArcticMonkeys is the 3rd most trending topic of discussion on Irish Twitter, with Alex Turner in 5th position but bringing up the rear is Foo Fighters. Weren't they amazing last night???

I was blown away by their set. Dave Grohl has so much energy. I want to be Dave Grohl when I grow up!!! 😆

Laryngitis

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx (voice box). Learn about laryngitis symptoms and treatments.

SideWonder · 24/06/2023 12:53

YABU @Dulra You know that singers' voices can be permanently damaged by singing when their vocal cords are not healthy? Do you think that someone should sacrifice his whole career for one concert?

Mammyof22020 · 24/06/2023 12:55

My husband and his friends flew over to Dublin to see them. The moment they stepped off the plane on Monday they got a text saying the gig had been cancelled. It wasn't a total loss, they did some sightseeing and went to some nice pubs for Guinness. However hubby said if he had known they had canceled before the flight he probably wouldn't have gone.

SayHi · 24/06/2023 10:48

Obviously you can’t help getting poorly.

But I don’t know why these singers cram so many performances into such a short amount of time.

So many cancel due to MH or voice issues.
Why not arrange a tour so there’s a few days of rest every now and then.
Yes it would take longer but surely so much more enjoyable.

Because touring costs a massive amount of money and every day they have to cover costs of the entire huge team it takes to put on these shows. Rest days means minus money not earning money.

Umm massive world wide exposure to millions watching ?

Justdontask · 24/06/2023 13:13

Another thing to consider is when a headline band has to pull out of a festival it also likely causes even more upset than standard gigs/concert. If a concert is cancelled the fans are disappointed but get the refund (obviously not hotel or travel but that's always a risk with booking things) but if people have bought festival tickets based on headliners they don't get a refund, and if it's last minute usually not even an equivalent replacement.

You can’t underestimate the cachet of Glastonbury. There are very few festivals with global name recognition and coverage. Coachella is one, and Glastonbury is up there.

YANBU.
Alex Turner is a rabid DUP supporter. This was purely to spite the Republic.
