To be angry with the Arctic Monkeys?

Last night the Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury. Three days earlier they were due to play a sold out gig in Dublin but cancelled it the day before stating the lead singer Alex Turner had laryngitis. He sounded pretty pitch perfect last night 🤔

The gig in Dublin sold out in minutes last September. My dd was due to go and was really upset and disappointed. She has just finished her state exams and had been really looking forward to it. Many people lost money in their bookings for hotel rooms, buses, trains because they cancelled so late people couldn't get refunds.

I just think it is so disrespectful to your fans but obviously the notoriety of Glastonbury is more important to them then their Irish fans. I certainly wouldn't book to see them again.

DS and his GF went to Dublin especially for that gig! They had a great time anyway, and loved Dublin, but it was a big disappointment.

I'm absolutely sure the AMs cancelled Dublin to prioritise Glastonbury, you don't get over real laryngitis that quickly, so I suppose the moral of this story is don't book a big gig if the band is due to play Glasto the following week!

Well, this is the question for @Dulra’s DD. Would she rather attend a disappointing gig where the lead singer is clearly unwell or get a refund or rescheduled tickets?

She'd have preferred a rescheduled gig I think, mainly because of the effort to get the tickets in the first place and her mother's complete inability to manage to ever get tickets don't think she'll have confidence in me getting them again 😀.
She's only 16 so it was a massive deal for her, thanks for your responses sounds like I was BU but maybe postponing may have been more palatable then a full cancellation. I think too many local businesses lose out on a full cancellation. The local pub was raging that they lost the trade of 40,000 people traipsing past their door 🤣

I was at their London gig and it was awful - no surprised the Dublin show didn’t go ahead.

Was surprised it was cancelled rather than postponed.

Sometimes cancellations happen as there is no date that works for both the venue AND the band within a reasonable time scale.

anyolddinosaur · 24/06/2023 10:35

You'd like someone to permanently ruin their voice so your kid wasnt disappointed. Teach your child health is important and other people have rights too. They tried not to disappoint a lot more people by playing Glastonbury when they probably should have cancelled that too.

Sparkletastic · 24/06/2023 08:29

I don't think his voice sounded pitch perfect last night. It sounded like he was delivering the lyrics in an odd speaking manner at times, presumably to protect it. They didn't put on a great show imho.

I agree. Saw them live recently and Alex's voice was stunning. Last night he just sounded weird.

mfms · 24/06/2023 10:37

If he's sick then fair enough. Maroon 5 did it years ago literally half an hour before doors opened and they were pictured partying the same night, in that case then I'd never seen them again

tootsnwoocake · 24/06/2023 10:41

I have tickets to see them in Glasgow tomorrow with DD. I was really looking forward to it, but after last night - not so much. I am half expecting them to cancel but DD would be gutted.

LlynTegid · 24/06/2023 10:42

I do wonder if it time for there to be something that requires a day or two off each week for bands on tour. Whilst the Arctic Monkeys probably have some control of their schedule, when you read of what some of the karaoke style groups allegedly had to contend with in the 1990s (such as Simon Cowell or Simon Fuller managed pap), perhaps long overdue.

Would not stop all cancellations, but might save a few. Though reform of the ticket buying process and an end to hidden fees would be first on my list.

This. These artists are real people doing a job and if their own health (and career) is out at risk by carrying on then they need to stop.

there’s a question around the planning of gruelling touring schedules and so many dates close together, and I understand the disappointment from fans but it’s a physical job and artists need to look after themselves sometimes

SayHi · 24/06/2023 10:48

Obviously you can’t help getting poorly.

But I don’t know why these singers cram so many performances into such a short amount of time.

So many cancel due to MH or voice issues.
Why not arrange a tour so there’s a few days of rest every now and then.
Yes it would take longer but surely so much more enjoyable.

SayHi · 24/06/2023 10:50

I also don’t understand why Glastonbury is more important to them than their personal gigs.

So many seem to cancel their personal gigs which their favs have paid to see them specifically but play for Glastonbury which they may not have many fans at.

MenopauseSucks · 24/06/2023 10:51

Can you use travel insurance to get back ticket, hotel & travel costs in the UK if the gig is cancelled?
I've used ticket insurance before to get a refund - needed a doctor's certificate but got most of it back.

blankittyblank · 24/06/2023 10:53

Dulra · 24/06/2023 08:31

I get that he needed to rest his voice but it obviously wasn't laryngitis you don't recover from that in 3 days. Also why cancel? They could have postponed to a different date? I was 3 hours online trying to get those tickets I wouldn't have minded so much if they postponed to a different date. Ironically they are still advertising it as their UK and Ireland tour well it's just UK you never played Ireland!

There was a question mark over whether they would be able to play at Glasto- it was reported in the week. It's also why they had that surprise Foo Fighters gig in the afternoon - they were there as back up in case they had to replace as headliner.

Zhougzhoug · 24/06/2023 10:57

I'm not a fan of the Arctic Monkeys so I didn't see their set but tbf I have had laryngitis a couple of times and there were two days where I had no voice at all and then it just came back as quickly as it went, bit croaky at first. It also didn't hurt any more or less than a normal sore throat.

orangie · 24/06/2023 09:15

The tempo thing is something Alex Turner does... I think he does it as a 'this is my music, I'll sing it how I want' kinda thing. I think it's genius to be honest haha!

You’re absolutely right, I’ve heard this a lot. Particularly about this tour, he’s doing it a lot. I’ve also heard (not sure if this is true) that he does it so the audience can’t sing along because it irritates him. Which if it is true, is a tiny bit shit imo! And more than a little self indulgent.
I agree, last night was not his finest hour.

chemistnightmare · 24/06/2023 11:00

Probably true. He is so arrogant.

HappiDaze · 24/06/2023 11:11

Well he clearly hasn't recovered but chose nevertheless to take a gamble to play for his fans

What more do you expect

His voice could well be ruined from last night but it will him longer to recover his voice which is what he uses to make a living so of course he needs to protect it at all costs

whynotwhatknot · 24/06/2023 11:23

i heard he slowed down all the sgons to protext his voice

it was quite dull r4eally-sorry yu9r daughter didnt see them

nancy2022 · 24/06/2023 11:28

Wtf happened to his accent? He thinks he's some sort of northern Elvis now??

Of course I wouldn't. I would never expect anyone to perform unwell. I was querying whether he was ill at all or just resting for Glastonbury but many have pointed out to me that his voice had been cracking at earlier gigs and he wasn't sounding too well at Glastonbury so my later post accepted that I was BU. When you come from a small country like Ireland you get used to not being a priority for big acts many don't even come to play here at all so I wrongly assumed AM weren't prioritising their Irish fans

Just watched half of the Glastonbury set (couldn't stomach any more to be honest). Absolutely dreadful. They literally did Ireland a favour at least you got your money back.

He sounds so weird. Last night people were hearing Bowie. I heard Holly Johnson and a bit of Neil Diamond. I didn't hear Alex Turner.

changeyerheadworzel · 24/06/2023 10:02

Lousy to cancel Dublin at such short notice. I understand your daughter must have been disappointed. I do have to say ( and I go to a lot of gigs) The Arctics are absolutely the worst band I have ever seen live. Like they are bored out of their minds and just want to get through the set and get out of dodge. Glastonbury was no exception. I am not a fan of Dermot Kennedy but he will put on a great show tonight and your daughter will have a ball.

This- I took my teens, cost about £400 in total and hard to get tickets and they were crap, no interaction with the audience and looked like they weren’t interested in being there. Waste of money

Dazedandbemused0 · 24/06/2023 11:40

So he should have pulled out of Glastonbury too despite having recovered? What a weird thread!
