To be angry with the Arctic Monkeys?

Last night the Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury. Three days earlier they were due to play a sold out gig in Dublin but cancelled it the day before stating the lead singer Alex Turner had laryngitis. He sounded pretty pitch perfect last night 🤔

The gig in Dublin sold out in minutes last September. My dd was due to go and was really upset and disappointed. She has just finished her state exams and had been really looking forward to it. Many people lost money in their bookings for hotel rooms, buses, trains because they cancelled so late people couldn't get refunds.

I just think it is so disrespectful to your fans but obviously the notoriety of Glastonbury is more important to them then their Irish fans. I certainly wouldn't book to see them again.

I don’t understand why people buy non refundable hotel rooms and train tickets for events that might be cancelled.

Because the difference between them can be hundreds of pounds?

I always buy knowing if something is cancelled I would still use the hotel/trains and just do something else in the area. I love a wee night away though!!

Ginseng1 · 24/06/2023 08:42

They were very flat last night definitely off! Saw them at Electric Picnic last year they were class.

Popsicle42 · 24/06/2023 08:42

Whilst I agree that there is a spate of artists cancelling gigs for what I consider to be spurious reasons, I don’t put the Arctic Monkeys in that category - they’ve always been a hardworking band and it must have been very bad for them to cancel a gig. In terms of cancelling vs postponing I suspect that is a decision made between the venue and the promoters and not something the band would have a say in.

I’m sorry that your daughter missed out on going to the gig, but sometimes singers get ill. It’s likely that a doctor gave advice that Alex needed to rest his voice to avoid permanent damage, rather than just him choosing to prioritise one gig over another.

DustyLee123 · 24/06/2023 08:43

Singers can get all sorts of drugs and injections in the throat to enable them to carry on. Private medicine is a wonderful thing 😉

I don't think his voice sounded pitch perfect last night. It sounded like he was delivering the lyrics in an odd speaking manner at times, presumably to protect it. They didn't put on a great show imho.

They played a clip on R4 this morning and I agree he did not sound great.

To be fair though a 2 hour slot at Glastonbury is worth 10 Irish gigs. In terms of exposure and sales. It just is, so makes sense to cancel Dublin to perform better at Glastonbury . It’s v annoying though and dies show disrespect but it’s just business imo.
anyone booking gigs for May/ June 2024 now needs to consider if the artist could be performing at Glastonbury 2024 and then decide whether to insure etc accordingly!

Like Taylor Swift next year. She has a Glastonbury shaped gap in her UK tour dates...

AlisonDonut · 24/06/2023 08:46

They book the rest of the gigs around Glastonbury and due to numbers, of course they prioritise it.

Sounds like he’d had it for a while and had to rest it so that it would recover so I don’t think your statement about not recovering in 3 days is fair really.

Not that I particularly like him or them, and I do feel for your daughter.

Thanks. I'm bringing her to see Dermot Kennedy tonight instead my dh was never that keen and only too delighted to hand over his ticket 😂

I saw them in London last Saturday and Alex Turner was definitely not right. I've seen them three or four times before, so I do have a point of comparison. I get that you're angry on behalf of your son, but I don't think Dublin was a strategic cancellation.

LaLoose · 24/06/2023 08:51

Sorry, your daughter!

EmpressSoleil · 24/06/2023 08:54

I'm angry they played near my house and it was really noisy 😂I was more gutted it wasn't a band I actually liked!

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/06/2023 08:54

Cancelling on doctor’s advice is not showing disrespect! It’s a professional person looking after their voice. YABU.

Popsicle42 · 24/06/2023 08:56

As a side note, imagine having to come on AFTER the Foo Fighters!! I think I’d have faked laryngitis to avoid the inevitable disappointment from the crowd!

Parkermumma07 · 24/06/2023 09:01

Watched them in Manchester a few weeks ago. It was like they just couldn’t be bothered to preform the warm up acts put more effort in!

It's not. I travel with work about twice a month and reserve train and hotel tickets everytime. Hotels are usually about £20 more and trains if got in advance (as you would as concert tickets are about 6 months in advance at least nowadays usually) cost about 15% more. Definitely not 100s!

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 24/06/2023 09:03

Knowing a bit about this industry (used to book bands for Rock City in my late teens) bands are tied into pretty hefty contracts with festivals.

Failure to turn up has heavy financial penalty because of what it costs the venue in clean up work (refunds, reschedules ect), loss of revenue, dealing with complaints and reputation.

schnauzerbeard · 24/06/2023 09:05

I don't know why they opened with that song. Alex Turner is so strange now, bring back the indie Alex without the quit!

schnauzerbeard · 24/06/2023 09:05

Anissue · 24/06/2023 09:06

People get sick.

Stillgoings · 24/06/2023 09:08

He didn't look well to me and didn't seem to be enjoying it..I thought the lack of energy and slowing down of songs really sucked the life out of it. I don't know what they are usually like live but I just assumed he must be dosed up with strong pain killers..it's a shame for your daughter and really they ought to reschedule but I guess that doesn't help with the.hotel/transport issues anyway..

Dermot Kennedy is a far better singer anyway, his concerts are fantastic!

It can be.

The difference between an anytime ticket for me to London compared with an advance is £120. That is for first class but basically offset the extra by using a railcard.

It may only be a small difference for you, but for some it well can be £100s.

Last week I booked 3 nights PI 🕵️‍♀️ n central London for august. The difference between a non refundable rate and a refundable rate was £220 over the 3 nights.

FanFanBam · 24/06/2023 09:10

I like them but thought it was quite a dull set, only really got going with the encore.

GoodnightJude1 · 24/06/2023 08:30

I saw them in Norwich a few weeks ago (they were amazing)
I’m pretty sure they’d have been gutted that they had to cancel a gig…but unfortunately it happens and if you can’t sing, there’s not much point doing it!
It’s gutting though….I had tickets to see Liam Gallagher and he cancelled coz he fell out of a helicopter and smashed his face in 🙄

They slowed quite a few of their songs down last night…maybe to suit Alexs’ poorly throat?!

The tempo thing is something Alex Turner does... I think he does it as a 'this is my music, I'll sing it how I want' kinda thing. I think it's genius to be honest haha!
