Fiver in a card for an adult?

Young lad who volunteers at ds football club is leaving to go to college.

We've got him a card and I thought I might put a fiver in it with a note to buy himself a beer at college. Is that weird?

I've asked around but no other parents are going to get him anything. He's not been there all that long but he's worked hard and ds likes him. I think he'd appreciate the thought.

Ds usually goes there and back by bus so I can't send him with actual beer.

So, AIBU to give him a fiver with a card? Is a fiver too mean?

YABU- £5 doesn't even buy a beer nowadays, give him £10

YANBU- its just a token thank you, £5 is fine.

I guess option 3 is to just give the card with nothing but I'd like to think the £5 will make him smile.

yabu, lovely thought and £5 if that’s all you can afford. I would say £10

Redglitter · 23/06/2023 21:08

If you can afford a tenner I'd give him that. Though I bet he'll be delighted with getting anything

Watchinghurling · 23/06/2023 21:12

5 pounds is a bit of an insult. 10 minimum, maybe 20.

sandyhappypeople · 23/06/2023 21:13

Definitely £10!

TappingTed · 23/06/2023 21:14

If you can afford £10 I’d do that. But a fiver is better than nothing. I’m sure he’d like the kindness from you in telling him what he meant to your son more than the money anyway.

Feelinadequate23 · 23/06/2023 21:14

I did something similar recently and gave £10 but obviously only give what you can afford.

Craftsandgardens · 23/06/2023 21:15

I think £10 is more appropriate.

TokyoSushi · 23/06/2023 21:15

If you can afford £10 then that would be great!

TheCig · 23/06/2023 21:15

I'd give a tenner or just the card

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 23/06/2023 21:16

Definitely £10!

WimpoleHat · 23/06/2023 21:16

A fiver is basically a pint, isn’t it? So a “buy yourself a pint on us” message is a nice one. I wouldn’t worry too much - it’s a nice gesture either way.

Handholdplease85 · 23/06/2023 21:17

I agree a fiver is perfect especially if you literally write “have a drink on us”

Chickychoccyegg · 23/06/2023 21:21

£5 is fine, especially if you're writing, buy a drink on us type of message.
It's a small , kind gesture, no need to get carried away giving £10/£20

Cyllie33 · 23/06/2023 21:23

Fiver in a card for a drink sounds lovely and well judged OP.

I don’t understand why pps have suggested a tenner, and no one has explained.

He will appreciate the card and fiver and it’s a good idea - high five!

User565394 · 23/06/2023 21:31

I guess I was thinking a pint would cost about a fiver and I was going to write "buy yourself a pint at college" on the card. It's just a token really.

I think I'll stick with £5.

Tenner or nothing. A fiver doesn’t buy you even a McDonalds anymore!

headcheffer · 23/06/2023 21:32

Lovely idea! Fiver is totally fine.

sadlittlelifejane · 23/06/2023 21:33

Definitely 5 with a note as then it's a token amount for a drink!

EmeraldFox · 23/06/2023 21:34

Fiver still buys a pint around here, perfect imo

Chowtime · 23/06/2023 21:34

I don't think you can get a drink for a fiver anymore. Give £10. or even £20

Callipsi · 23/06/2023 21:35

College? Is he drinking age?

EmeraldFox · 23/06/2023 21:36

FlyingSoap · 23/06/2023 21:31

Tenner or nothing. A fiver doesn’t buy you even a McDonalds anymore!

It's for a pint not McDonald's, anyway DS17 gets a £2 wrap at McDonald's with mates.

TemporaryNaming · 23/06/2023 21:38

I gave a card with a £5 costa voucher inside for someone similar. Was gratefully received!

MidnightInAustin · 23/06/2023 21:39

I would give £10.

Hooooping · 23/06/2023 21:41

I'd save money on the card for a start and just add a note.
