Fiver in a card for an adult?

User565394 · 23/06/2023 21:03

Young lad who volunteers at ds football club is leaving to go to college.

We've got him a card and I thought I might put a fiver in it with a note to buy himself a beer at college. Is that weird?

I've asked around but no other parents are going to get him anything. He's not been there all that long but he's worked hard and ds likes him. I think he'd appreciate the thought.

Ds usually goes there and back by bus so I can't send him with actual beer.

So, AIBU to give him a fiver with a card? Is a fiver too mean?

YABU- £5 doesn't even buy a beer nowadays, give him £10

YANBU- its just a token thank you, £5 is fine.

I guess option 3 is to just give the card with nothing but I'd like to think the £5 will make him smile.

Absolutely @SayHi

My DD volunteered at a sports club for several years. She'd have been absolutely thrilled with a fiver. It's absolutely lovely you did this for him.

If I had my time over again I would make a point of giving a little something for these kids who help out. I'd always vaguely assumed they must be paid, but no. DD had a couple of candles and a bar of chocolate over her years of volunteering, and they meant the world to her.

That’s a lovely thought and gesture. Certainly not an insult 😱😱😱

saltinesandcoffeecups · 24/06/2023 00:46

That sounds really nice OP.

I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.

ScattyHattie · 24/06/2023 02:05

Nothing wrong with a fiver, would buy his lunch if he didn't want a beer.

Rainydaysandicecream · 24/06/2023 09:04

Lovely idea OP. Well done for thinking of him.

Equalitea · 24/06/2023 09:11

£5 is a lovely gesture.

JulieHoney · 24/06/2023 09:15

A fiver wouldn’t get him a pint in half the places around here. I’d put a tenner in. But it’s lovely that you’re acknowledging his contribution.

5 pounds is a bit of an insult. 10 minimum, maybe 20.

You'd be insulted by someone giving a token gift/amount of money that they can afford?

TheCig · 24/06/2023 10:01

I'd wish they'd just written a card. a fiver is embarrassing everybody.

Why would anyone be embarrassed?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 24/06/2023 11:56

Cards are so expensive, if your child makes the card you'll have saved enough to round up to 10

Perry13579 · 24/06/2023 12:20

Ten would be better but if you can't afford it, five is ok, if you explain "have a beer on us"

You can buy a card for 30p in Asda...

Davros · 24/06/2023 12:39

Pint is at least £6 round these here parts

grimmers44 · 24/06/2023 13:13

A fiver doesn't go far...

User565394 · 24/06/2023 13:59

Well we gave the card (£1 from Asda) with the beer message and the fiver at training this morning. Kids went to playpark beside the football field, I sat on a bench with another mum. Next thing coach guy came running over to the playpark, said thank you to me and to ds, then got ds to write his name on the fiver and tucked it away in his wallet.

So I think he wasn't offended and he was happy. And I'm happy too
Successful outcome.

I like the idea that he'll pull that fiver out of his wallet and spend it in the college bat and think of us. But probably he'll just spend it on a Morrison's meal deal next week and forget all about it

The coach sounds like he, unlike so many seemingly adult posters on this thread, recognises and appreciates a kind and thoughtful gesture, in the spirit in which it was given.

Well, OP can insult me any day she likes!

Serena73 · 24/06/2023 15:20

I think it's a good idea but usually in that situation we would collect off everyone and get something between us - will the other parents not be willing to contribute? If not, I'm sure he would really appreciate your gesture.

OriginalUsername2 · 24/06/2023 15:21

This reminds me of when old relatives would sellotape a few pound coins into the card so I could buy myself a drink and chocolate bar. He’ll love it.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 23/06/2023 21:06

yabu, lovely thought and £5 if that’s all you can afford. I would say £10

^this!
How crazy that £5 can’t get you a beer.

@TheCig and @Watchinghurling need to give their heads a wobble. How rude, and clearly, how completely wrong.

It's gone up but if it's £6 then still close enough. Or three for £5.50 in tesco is what most people I know are doing now.
