To think he should take his own child to school?

I have a neighbour who's child is my daughters class, every day this past week this child has showed up at my door unaccompanied to go to school with us - this would be fine but my child has ADHD and mornings are chaotic and difficult. I don't have this child's parents phone numbers, and don't know exactly where they live! However I just saw the parent in their car driving away as I was trying to bundle all 3 children across the car park.....this child is very young and so I don't feel comfortable sending them home alone and clearly the parent isn't waiting for them to get home before leaving themselves! I don't have any contact with these parents so if something were to happen I wouldn't be able to let them know, we are also going away soon and won't be able to take him to school! AIBU to think this is really cheeky of the parents and that you shouldn't just assume another parent will take yours to school with no prior conversation at all!

See above.

@NowZeusHasLainWithLeda I can only admire your efforts with these thick posters. But I fear you are fighting a losing battle.

They are purposely only reading the OP's first post and determined to foist their pointless, out of date views! I think they are doing it on purpose now 😂

Cue the next post to say "contact the school!!" "!It's a safeguarding issue!" "Don't take the kid in your car!" 👇

🤣 I've never quite known anything like it. I've read grumbles on other threads before about reading TFT or at least the OP's updates, but never come across it before.
I'm sure the poor OP has hidden the thread and I don't blame her.

My youngest is 8 and I have 6 , never have I let mine walk anywhere alone ,they can walk to school when they start high school or the end of year 6 to prepare , I dont even like my son walking around the corner where I can see him when we get to the school , there are a few children near me in the same class as my son and I've never asked them to take mine or think to just sent them along in the hope they can , that's unreal , what are these parents thinking??? And u have no numbers so if something happened on the way to yours or school you couldn't contact them ?
Do u take the child home also ? You really need to make the parent aware in case the child has said oh so and so said I can go with them everyday ,and if that's not the case in which they should of checked and gave u a number and brought the child to your house to check each day , then u need to inform the school as its not on ,I can imagine the child waiting outside after school because they can't get in ! X

You need to collar the CF parent expecting you to take their child, that you don’t know, to school without prior arrangement!
People are so presumptuous these days & this is literally an insane situation because who just leaves their kid at a complete stranger’s door 🤔

I wonder if this could be a safeguarding issue and if it should be reported to the school - I'm quite sure no one will have thought of this

🤣

ArgosKettle · 25/06/2023 22:16

I don’t believe the brass neck cheek of some people!

I agree, get the school involved and if you know where the parents live - I would be having a few words.

My biggest concern is; if the child’s comes to your house and you aren’t there - what happens to the child? Do they go back home or just head to school by themselves?
It’s very concerning all round

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 25/06/2023 22:26

Clearly not many posters here had caravan holidays in the 80s - it was totally normal to latch on to other families and stay with them all week 😂

Goes to school on his own. As the school confirmed to the OP Friday morning he has permission to do.

RecklessGoddess · 26/06/2023 03:57

A lot of people have said it, including myself. It is 100% a safeguarding issue, I used to work in a school, and it's definitely something they need to be told about.

Walking alone to school is not the issue here, although I have no idea the age or cognitive ability of this child.
Off parent(s) go without an awareness of who their child has contacted along the way.
The writer who comments about “Karen”, well they clearly have never picked up a newspaper or attended a safeguarding/child death mtg.
The situation is for social workers to decide next steps. End of!

Well, I don't know if anyone else mentioned Karen, so I suppose you're referring to me. An awful lot of people are imagining worse case scenarios and jumping to judgmental conclusions without knowing any details. The details we do know is it's perfectly permitted for a 7 yo to walk to school by himself so the parents are legally doing nothing wrong. We know children often like to walk with other children. We know he's a nice child with whom her son appears to get along. And no one should ever want to get a family involved with social workers without a heck of a lot of evidence or justified suspicions. So many responses jump to the conclusion that they are negligent or even abusive when it's possible they're just very trusting. I have a very good friend who once told me they never ever lock their doors because they trust that God will watch over them. I hope He is, but I think that might be a tad too trusting.

The school can do nothing other than pass on her concerns since, again, the parents are doing nothing illegal. The police might look at her and say "so, what's the problem?" Some think they are rude or thoughtless or just plain awful. Maybe they are, but no one, not even OP, knows that. Some might think she was being rude or thoughtless or just awful if she took this to any authorities. Contacting the parents can't be that difficult before any other more drastic measures. So far, OP may be the only one who did something wrong or used poor judgment the day she let him in her house to wait. If he told his parents, they may be the ones to call the police over some lady taking their child into her house.

I follow the news, and am very aware of the terrible things that can happen to children. I commend OP for her concerns for this child, but speaking to his parents should have been the first step. If they are as awful as some people make them out to be, who knows what repercussions the child may be subject to for bringing attention to them. See, I, too, can dream up frightening scenarios. Get the facts first!

MoroccanRoseHChurch · 26/06/2023 06:25

Finally! Monday is finally here and fingers
crossed the school has had a word with the CFs and they’ve made arrangements to get their own child to school.

Traceeee · 26/06/2023 07:49

how far away is the school? Is the child just calling for your kid as a friend to walk to school with? Are there busy roads etc
a lot of children called for my mine at that age on the way to school

HoarHouse · 26/06/2023 08:46

That's what I said. The school will deal with it. The parents need educating.

On Friday the OP spoke to the school and the school confirmed that the children are allowed to make their own way to school.

How did you manage to notice that a lot of people had said this, yet NOT notice that OP has already spoken to the school?

Paulinetaff1963 · 26/06/2023 10:17

If anything happens to this child whilst in your care, you would be held responsible. I think the parents are bonkers and you should advise the school immediately.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 26/06/2023 10:30

If the child turns up today following you informing the school I'd ring the local police station and explain that this child is turning up each day, you don't know the parent or which house they live in, you've spoken to school etc.

I find it hard to believe that dc are allowed to walk to school at 7. My dd was only allowed to walk to school alone the last year of primary 10/11 yr old

The police would literally think you were mad.
The school have told the OP that children can go to school on their own. All that is technically happening here is that the child is calling for his friend on the way.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 26/06/2023 10:36

And the anecdote about your school is irrelevant. The OP confirmed 3 days ago that her child's school allows it.

BadNomad · 26/06/2023 10:38

Well, OP, did you drive the child to school today and did you tell the school that the father has been setting the child down at your door and running away?

She doesn't drive to school so doubtful.

But she told the school on Friday and they said it's ok.
