DD in shorts

13yo DD's school has sports' week. As the weather is warm (SE England), she's been wearing shorts to school. This morning DH (her dad) had a go at her for wearing it 'all week' and how short they are- she has 2 pirs, so not been wearing same. I normally berate my DD for wearing her school skirt too short, but this time had to defend her. Yes, the cycling-style cotton shorts ride-up a bit, but I see every other young girl having the same 'problem'. DD had skort, but she hates it and I don't think it's good in this weather as it is synthetic.
AIBU to think it's not 100% ok, but there is no alternative and she can walk to school in 'short' shorts. The shorts come to maybe 1/3 of her thighs.

The shorts only come to her mid-thigh and then ride up when she walks. She is v tall, but slim, so I have to buy her size 10 shorts.
Regarding her school uniform: she rolls up her 'normal length' school skirt, making it shorter. Apparently, 'everyone does it' at her school 🤷‍♀️

That sounds fair enough!

Our pupils have been allowed to wear their PE kit to school this week as it was too hot for normal uniform, and I had to send two girls to the office to get changed as they had cycling shorts so short that their butt cheeks were hanging out the bottom.

In cycling shorts, u wouldn't think a bit of thigh would be of concern so much as the fact they're basically long knickers. I'm surprised the school is OK with the teen girls in such form fitting clothes which their shirtd will barely cover

Teenage girls have bodies and shapes. These are not the problem. The problem is people and their pervy thoughts. Some of these people are women. All these people need to get over themselves.

bluetongue · 22/06/2023 14:29

Gosh, I remember my sports uniform at high school being a short netball skirt with just ‘sports knickers’ underneath. You DH would have a fit over that!

JobChangeSoonPlease · 22/06/2023 14:35

What's wrong with shorts being short? Why the debate at all?

I don't understand why cycling shorts only cover a third of her thighs. Most I see come to above the knees so cover most of the thigh. Is she very tall? Or the shorts too small ? Personally I'd have thought only covering a third of the thigh would be too short for the school rules

I'm guessing it's Nike pros. They're
Not cycling shorts but bum covered. They're all wearing them here including dds. They're fine.

mondaytosunday · 22/06/2023 15:03

The cycling style shorts from our last school were not flattering to anyone with hips and were mid thigh or shorter. Students were not allowed to wear them outside of games.
The skorts were so short they were not allowed to wear them without leggings underneath which was uncomfortable in the weather for sure! There was such an outcry about them the school changed uniform supplier but the new lot were worse!
And I was fully grown 5' 11" 36B bra at 13 so not sure saying 'she's just a child' is relevant. Many girls at 13 have quite developed bodies.

If her bum cheeks are fully covered and the tops of her thighs then what’s the problem? She’s a child wearing summer clothing. If he is sexualising that, then it’s a he problem.

Was her bum cheeks covered though? Let's be fair here the Nike shorts are not covering anything. You need an oversized T-shirt and some how I don't think that what OPs DD was wearing.

FayCarew · 22/06/2023 15:10

How would you feel if it was your DS wearing cycling-style shorts to school?

I don't think I would be comfortable with a colleague or child wearing short cycling shorts for office/school, especially if they were a bit see-thru.

I mean, we can only go on what the op wrote, but she said they covered one third of her thighs which is quite a way down from the bottom of your bum for most people I would have thought.

Poor kid, it’s just shit that she’s getting bollocked for a. Being female and b. Wearing the school uniform her parents provided for her.

FayCarew · 22/06/2023 15:26

Is it about the length being on show or that they are clingy?

Not sure children should be burdened with having to wear "flattering" garments - and they don't need adults obsessing over the size of their bums or boobs.

Ick.

Bobbielikespeas · 22/06/2023 15:36

When I was 14-15 my parents never minded me wearing short skirts etc.. And I did because I thought they were cool. Remember getting stared at and whistled by creepy men on the street and on a bus on a couple of occasions. Felt so uncomfortable that I changed the way I dressed completely after. So it depends on how much attention the the outfit attracts, if you think it's susceptible to pervy old men looking, then it's no use just saying they shouldn't look.

taybert · 22/06/2023 16:04

@Bobbielikespeas the problem is that it gives girls the message that they are responsible for the men perving on them.

Butterwouldmelt · 22/06/2023 16:11

@Delphium I've read OP I'm well aware of what OP said.

I asked a question in addition. I'm with the poster if your curvy and I'm this body shape myself so no I'm not being pervy FFS we all wore school skirts rolled up...

The point is though OP is actually saying its the only choice as though there is no other alternative. People clutching at straws regarding boys... well at DS school none of the boys have skin tight shorts on for a start... perhaps it's because they are primary school.

Even in a work place you would be spoken to regarding a uniform that was coming across as sexualised. I'm not sure why you and others can't try to see this from both OP and her DH perspective 🤔

MissingMoominMamma · 22/06/2023 16:17

So many adults saying they aren’t comfortable, or don’t want to see that.

Can’t they see that they are the problem here? Not the children, or the shorts.

Don’t force your warped ideas into the consciousness of young people!!

FayCarew · 22/06/2023 16:36

@MissingMoominMamma , I have no issue with young girls wearing them, just not for school. I wouldn't want to see boys wearing clingy skimpy clothes for school either.

Kids can be cruel, and children of that age are at different stages of puberty, and the comments of other children can be damaging and hurtful.

RampantIvy · 22/06/2023 16:46

Some of DD's friends at 13 looked nearer to 16.

I'm not saying it's wrong for your DD to wear these shorts, but it"s a little naive to assume that all 13 year old girls look like little girls.

Nussbaum · 22/06/2023 16:56

Your DH is the problem, not the shorts.
If my DH had come out with that shit, he would have been told to fuck off and sort his head out.

Boomboxinmyattic · 22/06/2023 12:01

To a Scandinavian, the whole "sexy school girl" trope is incomprehensible; children's bodies are not sexualised there.

Lol at the naivety here. The sexy school girl thing is to do with uniform. I don't think school uniform is widely used in Scandinavia. However paedophilia is a worldwide problem.
Also a 13 y o is not a child from a sexual point of view. In many cultures worldwide they would traditionally be getting married around that age. Most 13 yo have started puberty.

CatsOnTheChair · 22/06/2023 17:23

If her bum cheeks and knickers are covered, I'd take it as a win in my schoool this week.

taybert · 22/06/2023 16:04

@Bobbielikespeas the problem is that it gives girls the message that they are responsible for the men perving on them.

Unfortunately that's the reality though isn't it. Not just old men but all men . Not sure why you think only old men are interested in sex.
Men are very visually motivated and very sex orientated. That's just biology. Civilised men won't act on their reactions to a skimpily clad teenager. But they will still look and notice. The child's father obviously knows what men are like and wants to protect his daughter.
