Item not scanned in clothing store - wwyd?

To keep it short and simple, today I was in Primark doing an exchange.

The Sales Assistant scanned the items that I was bringing back, no issue there. I was swappig the items for a handful of kid’s shorts. p

There were two shorts that were similar in style but they were NOT a set. They were priced individually for £3 each and each had their own tag. The Sales Assistant scanned one pair and just folded the two together. I realised at the time but said nothing at all.

Once the exchange was completed, I only had to pay £1.25 as opposed to £4.25. This is a non issue as it’s done now but as I walked out of the shop, I wondered what other people have done.

So lovely Mumsnetters, what would you have done? Would you have walked away knowing you just paid £3 less than you should have? Or would you have mentioned something to the Sales Assistant once he scanned the item?

It’s not my job to tell someone how to do their job. If the mistake is in my favour then I benefit from it.

Would you tell them how to do their job if the mistake was in their favour?

Off course I’d be singing like a bird if the mistake wasn’t in my favour.

I’d expect compensation for any inconvenience it caused to me too.

I have in the past returned to a shop after getting home and explaining how I wasnt charged, asking to pay. So no, I wouldnt have stayed silent knowing at the actual time. In fact I've been in that exact situation before and spoken up. Its theft in my view.

Handhold
There was a case of a lady who became very rich using shoplifting methods then taking the goods back scam. She ended up in prison , but for years it was incredibly lucrative for her. She traveled the whole of the uk in rented cars to different stores in order to avoid being recognized. It was a clever scam and she did get away with it for many years.
I can imagine the shops have tightened up their policies over the years due to people like her and returning goods without receipts etc.

Batmannequin · 21/06/2023 19:24

Id probably have mentioned it if I noticed while it was happening. If I realised once I'd left the id give it no extra thought.

georgarina · 21/06/2023 19:25

Says something about our society that we all feel so morally obliged not to accept an extra crumb off a billionaire company's plate!

My local Sainsbury's has had prices going up every time I go in. I did Smart Shop and during the check the cashier realised I had (accidentally) not scanned an item. She insisted that I not rescan and just take it with me.

Susuwatariandkodama · 21/06/2023 19:27

I wouldn’t have said any other, It’s their mistake, I wouldn’t really think about it and would just get on with my day.

HazelBite · 21/06/2023 19:33

Some years ago I bought a packet of pants from Primark. It said size 14-16 on the packet when I got home and opened it they were all size 8-10, they wouldn't change them or refund them for me as they were pants and their policy was not to exchange underpants!
They are not the best of shops.

Akitasmum · 21/06/2023 19:35

When I was young my dad was in Woodwards. Picked up a screw and put it in his pocket. Looked for something else, paid and drove home. Realized he’d forgot to pay for the screw and drove all the way back to pay for it. We lived a half hour away.

Handholdplease85 · 21/06/2023 19:36

@jc12689 but I didn’t want any money back. I just wanted to exchange a medium for a large?

ArcaneWireless · 21/06/2023 19:45

The point to say something was when you stood there and watched the mistake being made.

The general consensus is correct.

As for sleeping soundly? No surprises. Folk that are unscrupulous enough to deliberately steal without a second thought probably would.

Weedoormatnomore · 21/06/2023 19:46

If it happened because they where too busy chatting to colleagues I would say nothing. If was an error while busy trying to serve in a rush as long queues I would say something.

ApiratesaysYarrr · 21/06/2023 19:54

I would have said something, as I would have been terrified of being stopped on the way out and found out that I had more items in my bag than I had a receipt for.

I'm also in a profession that means that I would be reported to my regulatory body. I don't think I'd be struck off/ lose my job over theft of a £3 pair of pants, but even for a £1000 item, it would not be worth the hassle of getting black mark on my record.

However it would mainly be the personal shame that would stop me - I don't think of myself as someone who steals things, and I wouldn't want to change that.

Saunaandsteam · 21/06/2023 20:05

This happened to me, the item was approx £15 and I realised when I left the shop. I walked around the block and thought about it and decided I couldn't enjoy the item with the guilt so I took it back in and told the cashier. She was very surprised that I had returned and thanked me for my honesty.

You mean you’re not intelligent enough to understand what I wrote? 🤔

Luckily I’m not a total cunt and won’t point out how thick you must be 🤣

You're right I don't understand when you said it's not your job to correct them but then strangely it is your job when it's in your favour

Why not just say from the start you'll happily school someone if you think you might lose out but woi cares if you get something for nothing

Nothing wrong with that, just own it

Creative34 · 21/06/2023 20:23

I would have walked on out and considered it a win

stayathomer · 21/06/2023 20:29

If I’d have noticed I’d definitely have, if id noticed afterwards id have taken it back because now when they’re stock taking there’ll be too much drama for a pair of shorts

romdowa · 21/06/2023 20:30

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Things like that always happen to me and I never say anything . I've had a book I ordered online marked as out of stock , I received a refund and then the book arrived. I've had extra things appear in online orders. The best one was an online order that hadn't arrived after 3 months. We were refunded and 2 years later it arrived 🤣 im always chuffed with a freebie like that

caringcarer · 21/06/2023 20:37

I'd have told the assistant because I'm always terrified leaving a shop the alarm will go off. I bought my dd a dressing gown from Woolworth years ago and watched the assistant take off an alarm tag. I went to leave the shop and the alarm went off. I was asked to come back in and the security person checked my bag. I showed my receipt and he found a second security tag on the dressing gown. Even though I'd paid for it I went scarlet and felt sick. I'd just not risk that again.

It’s the same as how Robin Hood was seen as a folk HERO and the sheriff was the bad guy. Robin Hood was, according to law, a thief, but was he morally wrong? Is redistributing wealth to make it more equal morally wrong? I just can’t get all worked up about someone accepting a mistake worth £3 from a company making over a £billion profit each year.
