Item not scanned in clothing store - wwyd?

To keep it short and simple, today I was in Primark doing an exchange.

The Sales Assistant scanned the items that I was bringing back, no issue there. I was swappig the items for a handful of kid’s shorts. p

There were two shorts that were similar in style but they were NOT a set. They were priced individually for £3 each and each had their own tag. The Sales Assistant scanned one pair and just folded the two together. I realised at the time but said nothing at all.

Once the exchange was completed, I only had to pay £1.25 as opposed to £4.25. This is a non issue as it’s done now but as I walked out of the shop, I wondered what other people have done.

So lovely Mumsnetters, what would you have done? Would you have walked away knowing you just paid £3 less than you should have? Or would you have mentioned something to the Sales Assistant once he scanned the item?

Oh I certainly am. But seeing as my manager told me he purposely didn’t pay for cheese at the self checkout till in Sainsbury’s the other day, our conduct outside of work has nothing to do with the industry we work in!

Well clearly you don’t hold yourself to those standards or this wouldn’t even be an AIBU for you.
Your manager’s conduct has no bearing on yours. You’ve entirely missed the point.

Ardiaei · 21/06/2023 18:39

If I’d noticed it was happening I would have said something at the time. If I’d noticed it later I would have forgotten about it.

Absolutely fair enough. So you’ve just got a free wardrobe in your house?😂

I absolutely do and it my favourite because it was free lol! It was £100 quid as well too.

I personally don’t find it the same as walking into a store, putting something into your bag and walking out. In that situation, you’ve walked into the store with the intention of stealing something and taking it without paying.

In my situation and a few mentioned on this thread, I’ve taken my items to the till with the intention of paying for everything. In no way was I trying to trick the Sales Assistant into making him think that both shorts were apart of a set or anything. He wasn’t paying attention because he was distracted and I just didn’t say anything. It seemed more like a pleasant surprise of ‘oh wow, he isn’t going to scan that pair’ as opposed to ‘I’m the world’s greatest thief!’

Yeah but that's because you're essentially dishonest in nature. People who steal don't understand people that don't because it feels natural to them.

darkmodeon · 21/06/2023 18:41

Someone worked in ridiculous conditions and was poorly paid for those shorts. And you value them so little.

Rubycoola · 21/06/2023 18:41

@ItsBritneyBitchhhh I understand what you're saying. I struggle with cash flow too and have a little one so I understand your situation.

But if you notice at the time and know you are walking out with a free item because of a mistake, the outcome is exactly the same as it would be if you swiped it and put it in your bag. You know you should be paying but you made a choice not to. How is that not stealing?

OneTC · 21/06/2023 18:42

Plus you're blaming others and your own personal situation for your choice to steal.

I’d have mentioned something. I just think unless you’re on the breadline it’s scummy to steal

Cucucucu · 21/06/2023 18:46

It’s Primark they make billions in profit while constantly breach U.K. human rights , I think you can sleep well today

Hmmmm, in Primarni I’d have probably done the same as you. In a charity shop I would have spoken up.

Me too.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 21/06/2023 18:47

If the general consensus is that I’m a thief then I guess I’m a thief. I have absolutely nothing on my conscience and I’ll have a great sleep tonight. It’s always interesting to hear what other people would do in your shoes

Excellent role model for your kids there 👍

I'd have said something.
But then I couldn't sleep if I didn't.
My DC have ASD. I'm on the cusp, though never diagnosed, and the world is pretty black and white to me ( I have been offered 'read the room' comments on MN often over the years).
It's Primark's money. It makes no difference to me if a single person will be blamed or not.

This is exactly the type of excuse and justification that I find particularly pathetic. Why are you are trying to make it sound less 'wrong' than if you had gone into the store to steal. The intention and planning are different but the outcome exactly the same in that you took something that you knowingly didn't pay for. I find this attitude much harder to understand than people who don't make weasly excuses 💁🏻‍♀️

The company and the cashier being shite is a separate issue.

Merkins · 21/06/2023 17:30

If I’d noticed at the time then I would’ve told the cashier, as they’re the one who will get shit if the till doesn’t balance. I’d rather not risk someone’s job for the sake of a 3 quid saving (though I’d hope they are allowed some margin for error). If I didn’t realise until I got home then I wouldn’t worry about it.

Why would the till not balance?

No skin off my back if you find my comment pathetic. All I was doing is explaining why I didn’t view it the same as stealing. This is a discussion forum after all

If I noticed it at the time then I would have mentioned it to the sales assistant.

If I noticed it upon arriving home, I’d feel no guilt as it was sales assistants responsibility, and given the small sum of money involved it would actually end up costing me to get the tube back into town to alert them of their error, along with the loss of my time.

the80sweregreat · 21/06/2023 19:00

I would have gone back and had it rectified or pointed it out at the time.
I know it sounds ridiculous, but it would have worried me. I totally understand why you didn't though and it was human error on their part, so I'm sure many people would have done the same as you especially if they only noticed once they got home.

I wouldn’t say something in this situation but I would in an independent shop, a pub or similar. Partly because Primark go out of their way to ensure that they do their customers no favours eg I had some items with tags on but had lost the receipt and they wouldn’t even let me exchange for a different size of the same item. Most other shops would allow that without a receipt.

That's because that's a classic shoplifting scam. Steal the goods and go back without a receipt and claim they want their money back most stores will have a no receipt no refund policy
