Item not scanned in clothing store - wwyd?

To keep it short and simple, today I was in Primark doing an exchange.

The Sales Assistant scanned the items that I was bringing back, no issue there. I was swappig the items for a handful of kid’s shorts. p

There were two shorts that were similar in style but they were NOT a set. They were priced individually for £3 each and each had their own tag. The Sales Assistant scanned one pair and just folded the two together. I realised at the time but said nothing at all.

Once the exchange was completed, I only had to pay £1.25 as opposed to £4.25. This is a non issue as it’s done now but as I walked out of the shop, I wondered what other people have done.

So lovely Mumsnetters, what would you have done? Would you have walked away knowing you just paid £3 less than you should have? Or would you have mentioned something to the Sales Assistant once he scanned the item?

If I'd have noticed, I'd have mentioned it.

However I have been in primark previously, had clothes and a bag, handed it over at the till and said just put it all in the bag to save on paper bags. I didn't realise until I got home that they hadn't charged me for the bag, I can only guess she assumed it was my own... if I'd noticed at the time (was dealing with a toddler) I would have said.

CheeseFiend40 · 21/06/2023 18:17

I wouldn’t have said anything and would be happy with my little bonus freebie!

WeWereInParis · 21/06/2023 18:17

I'd have mentioned it if I noticed at the time. If I noticed after I left the shop, I wouldn't go back and rectify it.

Berlinlover · 21/06/2023 18:18

I would have said something as I’m not a thief.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 21/06/2023 18:20

I have social anxiety so I wouldn’t mention it. It works both ways though because there have also been times I have been buying something in the sale and noticed it was accidentally rung up at full price and have just paid the full amount rather than speak up to the cashier. It would generally have to be a huge discrepancy for me to have enough confidence to mention a mistake to a cashier.

Ilovelurchers · 21/06/2023 18:21

It would depend on my financial situation. If I felt the extra money would make a difference to whether I could treat my kid that weekend, buy better food for dinner, replace socks with holes in them etc I would do it.

If I had more than enough money to never worry about stuff like that, so the money gained would make no real difference to me or my kids, i'd maybe say something.

That's why i don't tend to judge shop-lifters unless I know they hace no financial hardship. I'd rather Primark lost out if it means the kids get a packet of sweets for being good that weekend, or fresh not frozen food that night, etc.

Darknightsahead · 21/06/2023 18:23

I bought a wardrobe and drawers out of IKEA once and the girl only scanned the drawers.

I walked out of there as if I’d won the lottery and didn’t look back. Their mistake and I couldn’t have cared less.

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 21/06/2023 18:24

If it makes you feel any better I got charged twice for one of those double packs of wipes the other week.
I only noticed once I was home, and figured I couldn't prove that I'd only had one pack so just shrugged it off. So that's €1.80 extra they've had off me which goes most of the way to your £3 😬

SamBeckettslastleap · 21/06/2023 18:25

Imo that is stealing, no different from putting it in your bag because you noticed at the time and didn't say anything.

If you had got home and then realised that would be different.

I've done similar in primark, I think the value was more though - although no more than a tenner.

I'd gone in to grab a few comfy bits for post surgery. Went to the till to pay, the shop assistant wasn't focusing on me or my items as was having a chat with her colleague and didn't scan something.

I said nothing - partly because it wouldn't have happened if she'd been focusing, partly because I was begrudging having to buy some stuff I wouldn't get use out of again, but mainly because it was Primark.

I have pointed out errors in corner shops, small businesses etc.

This was the same with me today! The Sales Assistant was constantly talking to his colleagues and barely said two words to me. I would usually mention anything like that and I’m quite surprised that I didn’t but I do think that added to my reasoning (not that it makes much sense).

If the guy was paying attention, he genuinely would have seen that they both had two seperate tags. Or maybe he was trying to give me a freebie who knows!

I don't steal things so I'd have said something.

I know it's only £3 but it's not your £3 and most people that steal, IME, steal whatever they can get away with

Fallenangelofthenorth · 21/06/2023 18:27

Merkins · 21/06/2023 17:30

If I’d noticed at the time then I would’ve told the cashier, as they’re the one who will get shit if the till doesn’t balance. I’d rather not risk someone’s job for the sake of a 3 quid saving (though I’d hope they are allowed some margin for error). If I didn’t realise until I got home then I wouldn’t worry about it.

The till WILL balance though. She didn't scan it so it will be the stock that's down by 3 quid, not the till.

Handholdplease85 · 21/06/2023 17:43

I wouldn’t say something in this situation but I would in an independent shop, a pub or similar. Partly because Primark go out of their way to ensure that they do their customers no favours eg I had some items with tags on but had lost the receipt and they wouldn’t even let me exchange for a different size of the same item. Most other shops would allow that without a receipt.

Prmark have had that letter of the law exchange policy for quite some time now, they are perfectly within their rights to do it, its not a reason to knowingly steal stuff

I would have said something at the till if I'd noticed as I was brought up by scrupulously honest parents but not everyone has had the same advantages in life

Rubycoola · 21/06/2023 18:28

I would absolutely bring it to their attention. Today, I was going to a stately home that was £7.75 entry. The lady on the till accidentally typed in 75p on the card machine by mistake. I told her and paid the correct price.

In your situation, even if I only noticed once home, I'd go back in if it was local.

Just be an honest person. It's not hard.

Exactly this tbh. Money is VERY tight at the moment (payday is next week thank the Lord) and when I realised he didn’t scan a pair of shorts, I felt a sigh of relief. It’s only £3, not much at all. But that was £3 extra to add to the food shopping and that paid for bananas, oranges and yoghurts in Aldi!!

I do think that’s why I said if this was a situation that happened in a restaurant, I would have said something because I always have enough to cover myself for a meal out. I barely had the money to buy my kids shorts but because it’s so hot, I have too. Your post really resonated with me tbh

I wouldn't have said a thing and been please with my freebie. My dad told me how Lidl only scanned one of his 6 bottles of wine with other day, and he was out the door faster than he's moved in years, so I'm clearly a product of my parenting 😂

Absolutely fair enough. So you’ve just got a free wardrobe in your house?😂

Fair play to people who admit they wouldn't say anything but don't try and justify it. I feel a lot of contempt towards people who would remain silent but make excuses for their behaviour. If you are happy to be dishonest then at least be honest about it!

I wouldn't dream of keeping it. It wouldn't cross my mind to and I wouldn't have any morel dilemma in my head. Regardless of what the item is and how much is was worth I wouldn't dream of not saying anything.

The only time I might keep something is if I had already got home and it was a small item. The times I've ended up with something more expensive I've always called the company. Nine times out of ten they tell you to keep, the item anyway.

My adult kids and husband are all honest too. I wonder if these things are a result of how you've been bought up. We are atheists so it's not to do with religion.

I don't see 'not saying' anything as any different to deliberately stealing but I guess a lot of posters wouldn't actual shoplift or steal.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 21/06/2023 18:35

I personally don’t find it the same as walking into a store, putting something into your bag and walking out. In that situation, you’ve walked into the store with the intention of stealing something and taking it without paying.

In my situation and a few mentioned on this thread, I’ve taken my items to the till with the intention of paying for everything. In no way was I trying to trick the Sales Assistant into making him think that both shorts were apart of a set or anything. He wasn’t paying attention because he was distracted and I just didn’t say anything. It seemed more like a pleasant surprise of ‘oh wow, he isn’t going to scan that pair’ as opposed to ‘I’m the world’s greatest thief!’

Oh I certainly am. But seeing as my manager told me he purposely didn’t pay for cheese at the self checkout till in Sainsbury’s the other day, our conduct outside of work has nothing to do with the industry we work in!
