I don't think this TikTok video is the boy who is on the sub.... I think the Dad is but not the son.

Yes you're right! Thank you 😊

This is such a bizarre thread. Pages and pages of comments saying how horrendous OP is being for saying the people in the sub deserve to die … when she has said the exact opposite that. And 60+ % of voters agreeing with OP.

CallieQ · 22/06/2023 00:46

I think OP started it as a Goady thread

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 22/06/2023 00:50

I do wonder how much public money (Canadian/American/french) is being used to try to rescue these men in a sardine tin. Also how many man hours that could be used for something else by agencies like the coastguards and the navy.

im appalled so many agree with the OP. Aside from the mean mindedness of her post it’s in complete defiance of the facts. Huge resources of multiple countries are being used to rescue migrants from the seas around Europe. Then huge resources devoted to housing and maintaining them, giving them legal representation (and believe me if you needed that, getting the state to pay for it would be like getting blood out of a stone) to process their claims fairly. It’s one of the stupidest posts I’ve read in some time.

Plus the RNLI working in hugely difficult conditions to help people.

It is bizarre. I suppose it strikes a chord for a fair few

So stop this rescue now, just in case there's a bigger rescue in the future?

Yep, the right vibes. That’s what matters.

No no you have it all wrong. The world simply looks the other way when it comes to migrants. Every time. Not one rescue.

I am appalled as well. I am appalled too the MN didn’t take the thread down despite many requests from many users.

The basic premise that some lives are valued more than others is true, but this isn’t a situation that illustrates this premise. The two situations can’t really be compared and as you say many of her comments regarding resources/rescue efforts and so on are completely nonfactual/fake news.

And there is no UN agency spending £10bn a year on the assistance and settling of refugees/migrants/displaced people that the U.K. donates £100m+/Yr. The UNHCR doesn’t exist and the UN countries (mostly rich global north) do nothing…

Agree with all of this. The trouble is that popular sentiment has not moved on from the idea that we have to have certain groups in society whom we are free to pillory. It’s just different groups now (or sometimes the same - the elision between the wealthy and Jews is still very frequent on the left).

@FeedHedgehogsCatBiscuits women and children had been forced into the locked hold. That is why no children survived

No, but I think that oceangate needs a lot of blame on this as do the individuals involved as they signed a waiver but still did it. Regulations need tightening too so that there are minimum requirements to do these things that companies can’t choose not to follow.
the company were warned there were issues but are still doing these dives and now public money is being spent trying to rescue them.

Personally, I think if an international ban on private submarine exploration (save for legitimate research purposes) could be implemented, I can’t think of a persuasive reason not to do so.

The cost of bringing in such legislation, getting it signed off by everybody and policing it/prosecuting breeches?

I've no idea why such legislation would be proportionate, even with the current situation. We don't legislate to stop people dying on the worlds highest mountains, or scuba diving or participating in the TT.

Quveas · 22/06/2023 13:33

I genuinely hope that the people in the submarine are saved. I genuinely wish that these people today had been saved... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-65983001 I am not going to get into the whole "we can't afford housing, health care, whatever" debate. It is not about that. It is about saving the lives of people, and it is distrubing how many people here seem to think that it's ok to be left to die because you made bad choices - whether that choice was to spend a lot of money to get in a tin can and go deep sea diving, or in a small boat / rubber dinghy to try to make a better life for yourself and your family. Where has our humanity gone that we even consider that we shouldn't save a life because it isn't worth much to us? We live charmed lives if we have never made a bad choice ourselves, or been desperate enough to be driven to one. And are really fortunate if that choice didn't lead to such awful outcomes.

A group of 51 migrants arrive to Arrecife port after they were rescued from a boat at sea, in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

At least 30 migrants feared dead in Canary Islands disaster

The Western Africa-Atlantic migration route is considered one of the world's deadliest.

It seems that the news is not good. Do all the 'they don't deserve help/it's their own fault' feel all smug now?

Coffeelotsofcoffee · 22/06/2023 20:16

Have some respect. Those people have now lost their lives so I hope your pleased now.

I totally agree what kind of vile troll would even start a thread a thread like this. A 19 yr old teenager was on board . Do u think he deserved to die to.??

Disgusting sort ur lives out sick people

Artycrafts · 22/06/2023 20:29

What a sad life you must have, when you minimise death, according to one's social standing. Even more sad is that you aren't even original. Other sick lefties got there before you.

Endlesssummer2022 · 22/06/2023 20:40

RIP to all of them, however, they did have more money than sense. To be honest, the one I really feel sorry for is the 19 year old. The others should have known better.

Why couldn’t Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump have been Titanic enthusiasts?

Florenz · 22/06/2023 20:57

RIP.

Hopefully this dissuades any more crazy submarine descents.
