To think it’s ironic all the stops are being pulled to rescue 5 people from a submarine

Yet…. The world allows a boat with hundreds including children to sink

I think it's not a race to the bottom and we don't need to make it one. It's horrific in both cases.

Dotcheck · 20/06/2023 22:55

Fucking irresponsible, entitled rich people. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should

MrsMillhouse · 20/06/2023 22:56

i sincerely hope the people trapped in the sub are rescued and safe and sound.

but it just feels like some lives are valued more than others

I feel bad for the people in the sub.

But I don't disagree with you.

Put starkly like that it's utterly dreadful.

Dotcheck · 20/06/2023 22:58

This submarine thing is NOT horrific. They’ve chosen to undertake something which is dangerous, in a vessel which constantly goes offline. I hope they reimburse the public services on the search and rescue team

booksandcats22 · 20/06/2023 22:58

I really hope they're rescued but they should pay the costs of this themselves when they are, they can well afford it

SunscreenCentral · 20/06/2023 22:59

You're not wrong op. Some lives matter more than others, writ large.

Tipintorecession · 20/06/2023 22:59

So what about all the people in the middle? Someone goes up Ben Nevis in a pair of flip flops? Someone's canoe gets into difficulty off the coast? It's literally the job of the various rescue services to rescue people who've got into trouble, where do you draw the line? You don't approve of rich people being rescued? How do you decide? Ferrari crashes, leave the buggar to just die because he's rich?

I do get your point but not sure how you'd decide who was worthy?

Guineapigwoes · 20/06/2023 22:59

Rich people init

Honestly we should let that wreck lie, no good will come of poking around in it

Sane could be said for those getting in boats - yes the reasons are different - but there are huge costs to life and rescue teams etc
It’s about time we started to prosecute anyone arranging these irresponsible boats.

I'm sure they will happily do so!

I think the efforts to locate them is the right thing to do and hope they succeed

Lefteyetwitch · 20/06/2023 23:01

I've put them in the same category of those who die on Everest.

Completely pointless deaths for zero reason.

ThreeFeetTall · 20/06/2023 23:01

@Tipintorecession
I think the OPs point is the everyone deserves to be rescued

The point is they should all be worthy. The rich people in the submarine AND the poor people on the boat that sank.

GottaGirlcrush · 20/06/2023 23:01

The vessel which sank was offered help which was turned down....more than once. Various agencies assisted

So yabu

Agree . Am sure they absolutely would pay for their rescue.

shubhobsession · 20/06/2023 23:05

Exactly what I've been thinking op. All the news coverage. Where were King Charles^ thoughts for those 700 people. It's sickening. Those saying they made a choice clearly don't understand desperation

O1h · 20/06/2023 23:05

Unusual rescue situations always get more "things" thrown at them, rescue services and militaries get to train on extreme things they don't normally get to do and press interest obv because of the unusualness.
Both are awful situations.

Yes. Wealthy white lives. Lives from the global north. Fucking depressing.

Tinktravels · 20/06/2023 23:06

It's devastating. I hate this need for people to compare which tragedies in life are worse than others. It's not a competition.

HorseyMel · 20/06/2023 23:07

I didn't realise we'd started to ration rescue services - inversely related to a person's wealth. Long live the Labour Utopia of Mumsnet! ✊

It's always been a maritime tradition to help souls at sea.

RubyMurry22 · 20/06/2023 23:08

@EscapeRoomToTheSun actually 2 of the people in the sun are of Pakistani origin.

That claim by the Greek coastguard is under scrutiny and being questioned by the UN, International Rescue, etc. The vessel sent two distress messages to a charity that monitors and assists migrant vessels in distress hours before the coastguard subsequently claimed that their offers of assistance were rejected.

On the original question: desperate situation, especially for the young man whose father thought it was a good idea to take him on such a dangerous venture. I can’t imagine how desperate they will be feeling, if they are still alive.

Whatever the outcome, I hope no more such trips take place. I feel it’s disrespectful and frankly ghoulish.

Quite. I don't really think the football team in Thailand in 2018 should have been poking around a cave formation just before heavy rainfall either, but nobody questioned the media attention and rescue effort there.
