Do some news items make you think that humanity is irredeemable? ***warning - upsetting subject, related to treatment of monkeys***

I heard the story on the news today about people paying to watch baby monkeys being tortured online.

It was so terrible, and makes me think that, as a species, we're fucked.

And, if enough people will make it financially viable to do that, I know what I think would be next (but I can't bring myself to type it.)

Sorry to those who think I'm overdoing it, but I find it incredibly upsetting.

I fucking loathe humanity

doingthehokeykokey · 20/06/2023 22:30

OMG that is something beyond comprehension. Sickening

MCMLXXX · 20/06/2023 22:31

An opinion shared by many of us. So aren't you clever

It is just an opinion though. Other people think the pain caused to animals to eat meat in places like England is just as unnecessary on the whole. People draw the line on different places.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 20/06/2023 22:33

I'm so horrified by this that I can't read or watch it on the news. I haven't read the thread but couldn't pass over it without saying it's absolutely appalling on every level and my heart breaks for those poor creatures. What bastards the people who do this and pay to see it are. I thank the BBC for their work exposing these people and hope they're brought to account in this world and the next.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 20/06/2023 22:37

I saw a tiny clip on the news there those beautiful babies, how can people be so truly wicked.

I’m clinging onto the fact that there were people who fought with all they had to expose this wickedness and abuse of vulnerable monkeys. And that beautiful little Mini has been saved and with care, love and support will live the rest of her life happily. Yes humans caused her pain, but they also saved her

I’m actually quite amazed that this news story has finally been picked up by MSM. It’s been openly shown on all social media platforms for many years.

And did you report it if you saw it and knew about it?

user9630721458 · 20/06/2023 22:44

I don't know if humanity is irredeemable. I think about all the literature, art, music, inventions, medicine, architecture and we seem like we could be gods. But then there's wars and atrocities, destruction of the planet, and cruelties like this and it looks like we are more than half demonic.

ChronicallyChaotic · 20/06/2023 22:53

You can't 100% accurately identify them but there are certain traits that act as markers of those to avoid e.g., using Telegram, being proudly right wing, etc

I mean just look at Telegrams response to this compared to the other media platforms involved. Facebook, YouTube etc made the usual statements of this content has no place on their plaforms / we're working hard to remove this content, which while not great at least tows the line of trying to stop unacceptable content.

Working hard 😂 people have been reporting content on their own platform for years that's targeted for people who like seeing monkeys harmed. About four years ago I saw a few videos by animal rights activists about the playlists yet they remained. There's ones of children too, usually a collections of vids added to public playlists from family influencers and people calling influencer mums out for the type of angles and titles ans poses they make their children do for views get told they're just jealous and that their children consent to making vids like that toilet, people have been trying to raise awareness about that for year and no doubt YouTube will come out with the same shit when the family vlogger stuff goes mainstream too.

I got called a nutter for raising awa

So yeah, anyone who uses telegram should be given a wide bearth.

I know plenty of people who use telegram and they are left wing vegans. Yes dodgy people use the messaging app but it's not a marker that they get off on watching suffering.

YouTube and Facebook don't give a fuck either, YouTuber itself has playlists curated by people who hate monkeys and some animal rights youtubers have been trying to raising awareness in this for years. Facebook leaves up animal cruelty images all the time too. I've lost count if the amount of videos and one photos showing animal or human abuse I've reported to receive the generic "no guidelines broken".

Another thing, there's been some exposés of animal rescue content creators who show footage of themselves finding animals in distress and rescuing them from death and it turned out they were the ones abusing the animals and putting them in dangerous situations to be the one to rescue them, I haven't checked recently but those people hadn't been banned or looked into either.

I can only assume the platforms who claim tj be working hard to remove it, don't remove it or leave it up so long because the user engagement and money is more important than the animal welfare.

Every social media platform has some nasty sick depraved humans on there but not everyone who used them is supports or shares those images.

DrunkInTennessee · 20/06/2023 23:04

Yes, it’s confusing. Someone in the US sued or tried to sue Youtube for hosting this content and other animal abuse a couple of years ago. And I think it was maybe Peter Egan and Dominic Dyer drawing attention to it a few years ago.

Poochypaws · 20/06/2023 23:10

Yes the story is just beyond horrifying. I couldn't read it beyond a few words.
I had to reassure myself as I felt really upset that

  1. It was a headline on the telegraph so therefore I assumed the world was 'shocked' enough for it to be a headline. In other words it's unusual, a big deal, a big story, not commonplace if that makes sense
2 All the other comments here of others like me who are utterly horrified, upset and sickenend.

Anything to do with animals being hurt, used, abused makes me feel ill to the point of panic.

We don't deserve animals. I call my dog my furry angel, sent to help me with my life and it's trials. I do my best to be worthy of him and feel awful if I am grumpy with him. How people can hurt animals on purpose for 'fun' is just beyond me.

However lots of things are beyond me : human trafficking, child abuse, torture and beheadings. I have to retreat into my little bubble world of dogs and flowers and cosy beds or I wouldn't be able to cope. I think (hope) the vast majority of people are like this.

ChronicallyChaotic · 20/06/2023 23:21

@SaturdayGiraffe may be talking about the content I am referring to in my last post, where YouTubers have been raising awareness of these playlists rather than she watched them herself. There was a whole monkeygate thing years ago and a few big YouTubers talked about it. Here's one from four years ago showing the problem on YouTube and he's a big youtuber talking about it. I haven't watched it recently but he blurs any thumbnails and images of the stuff he's finding on YouTube going down the rabbit hole.

There's some much more recent ones if a couple of month/weeks ago talking about how the profit is made from animal abuse and lots of annoyance that after years of reports it seems that YouTube isn't removing the content or the people making it.

@Speakinginsign I'm a huge fan of Shirley after finding out about her work from the IPPL Instagram account. May I ask, is your book a 'safe' read? By that, I mean are there graphic details of mistreatment? I have a great fondness for our cousins, you see and I do tend to get very upset when I read about their mistreatment. I can cope with scientific/laboratory details and after effects though. Anyway, I'd really like to read it! I haven't been able to read the BBC report at all and I can remember crying for around three hours straight after hearing about little Millie Marmoset (thank goodness she went to Alison Cronin!). I remember Nim and Washoe well from my own psych undergrad days, that was probably how primates in general have stolen my heart!

Hello, thank you for your interest. If you look me up on Amazon, it will give you an idea. We discuss the psychological issues without being (I think) too graphic, but some of the themes are sad. It is an academic book but pretty simple to understand. We have dedicated a section to Shirley.

The monkeys are part of the pet trade. You can buy them legally in the US and other countries.

The videos originally started on YouTube and then moved over to another channel. It does say it but I can’t remember it right now

People asking where the monkeys came from. This is correct - monkeys are still part of the pet trade in the US and andò are trafficked in Africa & other countries where they are “wild caught”. This means the mothers are killed & babies snatched away. 😢😢 I’ve seen some truly wicked things in researching our book. Please look up the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone on FB, Instagram, etc.

We now give talks regularly to various sanctuaries. Bob does magnificent work for the Oklahoma Primate Sanctuary. He’s just finished welding a bunch of houses for incoming vervet village, rescued from labs.

There are still some really unpleasant lab studies being conducted, too. Just last year it was reported that a university lab in yhe US was sewing eyelids of baby monkeys to see how they bonded with their mothers. WTAF.

I am very shocked by this. I thought social media was regulated for illegal content.

Not at all. I have reported accounts on instagram that are openly advertising CSA and the response every single time has been “we are not removing this”.
Interestingly I just searched a key phrase on IG for the monkey torture and it only returned one account, so perhaps Meta has actually taken steps this time.

user9630721458 · 21/06/2023 11:16

@Speakinginsign Thank you for all you are doing to help primates. I will have a look for your book on Amazon. I am sure Jane Goodall will be aware of this heinous news and she may also be able to speak out against it, putting pressure to tighten up laws.
@SaturdayGiraffe It's outrageous. I will see if there is a petition later, when I have more time. At present I will contact social media providers to object and state I won't use their services until they address this. I suggest others do the same, as I just don't know what else to do.

Iloveanicegarden · 21/06/2023 11:23

@Terrribletwos Surely evil like this proliferates in the dark. Shine a light on it, call it out Name, shame and exact punishment on such people. I think looking at vids to examine something is different to watching for entertainment.

humans are cunts and need wiping off this planet

Bit extreme.

No I agree with the poster. Planet earth would be better off without us.

I’m inclined to agree too. 😔

I read the story (wish I hadn’t) and it turned my stomach. The prison sentences they face are derisory too.

I presented Jane Goodall with our book in March & she is aware of our work. She worked with Bob, my co-author, in the 1980s and members of the Jane Goodall Institute have been very supportive of our work.

Thank you 🙏

We need more threads like this.

@Speakinginsign ❤How amazing to have met Jane Goodall. She is such a force for good. Thank you again for all you are doing.

It's one of those situations where the punishment should fit the crime.

And yet many of you eat meat.

You don't need to, you're just in the habit.
Your enjoyment of meat means millions of animals a year are reared and killed.

Agree with this.

Empathy for animals should extend to all. Not which ones please your tastebuds.

Yes, this. If you feel like this it is absolutely beyond your power to understand how anyone can hurt an animal or take pleasure from seeing someone else do so.

Bumbleebeetree · 04/04/2024 19:05

I hadn't heard of this until yesterday. I just find it so utterly depressing. Makes me want to give up on humans and cuddle my son and cats as much as I can!! We don't deserve to have animals in our lives.
