Do some news items make you think that humanity is irredeemable? ***warning - upsetting subject, related to treatment of monkeys***

I heard the story on the news today about people paying to watch baby monkeys being tortured online.

It was so terrible, and makes me think that, as a species, we're fucked.

And, if enough people will make it financially viable to do that, I know what I think would be next (but I can't bring myself to type it.)

Sorry to those who think I'm overdoing it, but I find it incredibly upsetting.

To be honest I despise humanity, we’re a plague on this earth.

Makes you realise why we need religion and how it likely ever came about. Some people need the threat of being burned eternally in a fiery furnace to make them safe to live with.

I think crimes against animals should be punished as severely as crimes against other humans. It’s such a sadistic abuse of power, it is sickening. These people should have done to them what they have done to other living creatures.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/06/2023 17:43

Yep I read the BBC article and was debating on starting a thread but saw yours. Honestly I know the world is cruel and bad things happen but this has really affected me today. I've found myself cuddling my husband and cats so hard. Before anyone jumps on me for all of the human tragedy in the world - the world sucks for so many and this doesn't diminish my sadness about wider events. I am however done with the news for a bit because so many humans are awful and I just can't deal with real life as it is.

Noicant · 20/06/2023 17:45

Grotesque, anyone harming something or someone else for fun is just a grotesque and disgusting human being.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/06/2023 17:46

But on the positive, most of us are surrounded by good people whether you know them or not.

Orchidgal · 20/06/2023 17:46

CalistoNoSolo · 20/06/2023 17:33

Humans as a species are utterly vile. Individually made in the image of God, collectively made in the image of Satan, though fewer and fewer individuals are decent people these days. There are so, so many examples of utter unnecessary cruelty towards animals and other humans, usually driven by stupidity (I include religious belief here) and/or money. The sooner another, proper pandemic comes along and wipes the lot of us out the better.

I’m afraid I have to agree. I’m glad I don’t have children. Not because I wouldn’t love them dearly and strive to shape them into forces for good in the world. But because I would have zero control over what my great great great grandchildren would turn out like, and here would obviously be regression towards the rather ugly mean.

toddlepod · 20/06/2023 17:49

I read enough without trying to…. saw a paragraph beneath a photo and that was too much. Such wanton cruelty and enjoyment of torture.

If I was queen of the world, those responsible for supply and demand would replace all lab animals used for research to give the waste of organic matter they are some purpose.

It’s hard to believe people are capable of enormous love, care and compassion yet in the mix are such undermench, such vile beings capable of cruelty most of us could not and would not even think of.

If you get upset by these horror stories of cruelty there are some feel good ones here as an antidote -

But if you are watching these videos, aren't you contributing?

Who is watching them?

maddiemookins16mum · 20/06/2023 17:50

The monkey segment on BBC breakfast today made me cry.

fancreek · 20/06/2023 17:51

And, if enough people will make it financially viable to do that, I know what I think would be next (but I can't bring myself to type it.)

People already pay money to watch videos of people, inc children, being abused.

If it's abhorrent and exists, someone is making money from it.

pickledandpuzzled · 20/06/2023 17:36

I haven't read beyond the headlines- it's appalling.

I do wonder what is going on with people like that.

Can we identify them? Restrict them?

Are these people who we mix with unawares? It's a horrifying thought.

You can't 100% accurately identify them but there are certain traits that act as markers of those to avoid e.g., using Telegram, being proudly right wing, etc.

I mean just look at Telegrams response to this compared to the other media platforms involved. Facebook, YouTube etc made the usual statements of this content has no place on their plaforms / we're working hard to remove this content, which while not great at least tows the line of trying to stop unacceptable content.

Telegram on the other hand said they were "committed to protecting user privacy and human rights such as freedom of speech and cannot proactively patrol private groups".

So yeah, anyone who uses telegram should be given a wide bearth.

If you go looking for the worst in people then you'll find it. But I think everyday acts of love and kindness exist in abundance and they quietly swamp the bad and unjust.

What you described was horrific but as above, I do try to believe there's more good than bad in the world, but your heart could break on a daily basis

JamSarnie · 20/06/2023 18:17

As a species humans can be awful and I often think all the other animals in this world would be better off without us.

How an individual can enjoy inflicting such pain on an animal I will never understand. I also applaud the people who bring them to justice as I found it disturbing to listen to let alone see it first hand.

x2boys · 20/06/2023 18:20

hattie43 · 20/06/2023 17:32

Absolutely. Today was a sickening day of reporting animal torture .
Those poor monkeys
12mth puppy Otis being starved to within days of death
The dog meat festival in China .

I absolutely think the human race should die out .

Ok you first🙄

upyoursgrandad · 20/06/2023 18:23

I could only read a small part of it and even then it stayed with me all day. I can’t handle animal abuse stories, I can’t comprehend how anyone could get enjoyment from watching something like that. The baby monkeys are quite baby human looking, it makes you wonder where people who get kicks out of seeing these videos would stop. I don’t know what these people are but they just can’t be human. My brain won’t let me accept that.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 20/06/2023 18:27

I read the full story on BBC at lunch today. It's just horrific and I felt sick. :( those poor poor monkeys. It's stuck in my brain right now and I feel so sad and uneasy about it.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 20/06/2023 18:28

My husband keeps asking what's wrong but he hasn't read the story and I genuinely don't want to put this on him.

watcherintherye · 20/06/2023 18:33

I absolutely think the human race should die out.

Well, let’s face it, that’s the way the human race is headed.

Soubriquet · 20/06/2023 18:39

I made the mistake of reading the bbc report…. It’s….horrifying tbh.

I really feel for the people who had to investigate this

TulipTuesday · 20/06/2023 18:43

I saw the news article on BBC Breakfast this morning, they gave a warning but I don’t think it was enough of one. It’s affected me all day.

I think what has made this worse than any other awful animal cruelty story for me, is that there’s something so baby/toddler like about the monkeys and it made me think that these people are probably doing this because it’s more accessible than child abuse images. Am I the only one thinking that?

FruitTartlet · 20/06/2023 18:43

This is so upsetting. I am so glad the BBC revealed it and showed the people getting arrested. Horrific.

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 20/06/2023 18:43

Terrribletwos · 20/06/2023 17:33

But if you are watching these videos, aren't you contributing?

What a strange comment. I very much doubt OP is watching the actual videos. The report on the investigation into this is one of the BBC’s top headlines today.
