To ask about Bubble Tea

SunLover1985 · 19/06/2023 20:37

I’m a really unfussy eater and like to try new things.

I’ve never had Bubble Tea but it’s everywhere, especially in China Town of the city where I work.

I’d like to see what it’s all about but have no idea where to start.

Any tips?

Overpriced and not as good as you hope. But great fun!

Lcb123 · 19/06/2023 20:38

I used to work somewhere that served it - honestly if you saw the ingredients you wouldn’t ever want to consume it.

Balloonhearts · 19/06/2023 20:39

Absolutely revolting. I was so disappointed.

NoSquirrels · 19/06/2023 20:39

Buy one and try it?

(Personally I’m not a fan but minority of one in my household!)

Dotcheck · 19/06/2023 20:39

Just try a few different ones.

Im not keen on the creamy ones at Starbucks

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 19/06/2023 20:40

I tried it for the first time last month. It was basically cold sweet tea, with tea flavoured jelly balls at the bottom. It was ok, nothing I would rush back for. I didn't get the hype.

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 19/06/2023 20:40

Start with fruit rather than milk based - it’s just super sweet soft soft drink with tapioca pearls containing another juice inside - fun but overpriced as a PP said

NoSquirrels · 19/06/2023 20:41

I don’t think there are ‘tips’ as such - you get either a milk base liquid, or a fruity based liquid. Then the weird tapioca or liquid ‘bubbles’. Choose whatever flavours you think you’d like.

nailsonthebus · 19/06/2023 20:44

Try one! Have a milk one with tapioca

cleanbreak2022 · 19/06/2023 20:45

I took my 9yr old son for a bubble tea a few weeks back. Like any 9 yr old, rarely turns his nose up at a 'treat'.

It was the most god awful thing we had ever had. £5 each and no more than sips out of of each before they got binned!

How can anyone suggest trying anything with tapioca? This is supposed to be a treat? What? How?

angelikacpickles · 19/06/2023 20:47

The milk ones and the tapioca pearls are awful IMO. The fruit ones with the popping boba are extremely sweet but taste quite nice. Some places let you pick what level of sugar you want.

StopStartStop · 19/06/2023 20:49

Sickly nonsense.

MAREMCKENNA · 19/06/2023 20:49

I've never tried one because they're £4.95 where I live 😅

GwinCoch · 19/06/2023 20:50

There’s a million places in Cardiff to buy it. Most versions are super sugary but no judgement here if that’s what you want. It’s OK, but I’d rather have a wine!

MrsMariaReynolds · 19/06/2023 20:52

Brown sugar milk tea is Amazing. (!) End of.
I find the fruity ones revolting. And any decent bubble tea shop will let you modify the sweetness so it isn't as sugarlicious.

Justcallmebebes · 19/06/2023 20:56

So it's just a re-branding of a slushee, sugar and e numbers in an environmentally damaging cup? Great! Just what the world needs

hahaha with you there!
70s school kids are making "vomit signals" whenever they see this vile stuff.

It's not anything like a "slushee".

Mummaneedsabreak · 19/06/2023 21:03

It's gross. Some of it has floaty bits in that look like frog spawn 🐸

hettiethehare · 19/06/2023 21:04

I think it is revolting. But I am not a 13 year old girl.

Piapea · 19/06/2023 21:04

I got handed a bubble tea in a market in Taiwan about 15 years ago and absolutely loved it but had no idea what I was drinking! So glad they're everywhere now! I usually get a milk based (half sweet) with tapioca balls.. chewy goodness😊

hettiethehare · 19/06/2023 21:04

And I actually quite like tapioca pudding!

ExtraOnions · 19/06/2023 21:05

I love Bubble Tea … Strawberry & Mint Fizz with Strawberry Boba, amazing

Yikesno · 19/06/2023 21:07

I absolutely love them and so does DH. I like the fresh taro boba milk tea with 50% sugar. DH likes strawberry tea with boba, 30% sugar. Our Ukrainian guests all prefer mango and coconut.
