To ask about Bubble Tea

SunLover1985 · 19/06/2023 20:37

I’m a really unfussy eater and like to try new things.

I’ve never had Bubble Tea but it’s everywhere, especially in China Town of the city where I work.

I’d like to see what it’s all about but have no idea where to start.

Any tips?

I have bought them on too good to go app . Makes them a reasonable price

Skyrim41 · 19/06/2023 22:18

I get one with cherry pepsi and black tea when I'm hungover and popping balls normal sweet extra ice large with a side of candy floss and a bag of fruit mochi. Absolutely ruinous price you thought Starbucks was exspensive!.

XenoBitch · 19/06/2023 22:20

I love the fruit ones with popping boba. My local Tealith is doing them for 50% Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June (so just £2.45 each). Not sure if other branches are.

How can anyone suggest trying anything with tapioca? This is supposed to be a treat? What? How?

My thoughts exactly!

LubaLuca · 19/06/2023 22:28

I like both the milk and fruit sorts, and I'm yet to try a variety I haven't enjoyed. I think I'm quite strange though, I love things like blancmange and the skin on custard that other people find revolting.

Has anyone tried Mogu Mogu? That's a stranger texture than the bubble teas I think it has huge mouthfuls of jelly in it. I like the lychee one.

NorthWestThree · 19/06/2023 22:32

Love bubble tea! DD and I go about once a month to get one as a treat cos it's expensive

Watermelon fruit tea with mango popping bubbles. Sooooo good

TwoStepsAhead34 · 19/06/2023 22:33

@LubaLuca Me! MoguMogu jelly bits are so good.

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/06/2023 22:35

Not good and the bubbles get stuck in the paper straws

Catmuffin · 19/06/2023 22:40

I like the Costa one

EmmiJay · 19/06/2023 22:45

My DD is obsessed with them. Bubbleology, Boba, Costa, she has tried them all. I have a sip when she allowa me, and I think they're fun but could be sickly in one go (no idea how she does it). Her go-to fave is the brown sugar shake with tapioca balls from Boba, which is quite nice.

Teaslurpershutup · 19/06/2023 22:48

Overpriced and look disgusting. Must be full of sugar. I'd rather have a tea/ coffee and cake for a bit more money.

StellaAndCrow · 19/06/2023 22:48

Thanks for the link Felicity - yum, tea with tapioca and CHEESE FOAM!?!

"Some shops offer milk or cheese foam on top of the drink, giving the drink a consistency similar to that of whipped cream, and a saltier flavor profile.[20] One shop described the effect of the cheese foam as "neutraliz[ing] the bitterness of the tea...and as you drink it you taste the returning sweetness of the tea"."

Tilllly · 19/06/2023 22:51

I had one in costa for the first time
I liked the blueberries but otherwise, overpriced and meh

steff13 · 19/06/2023 22:53

Peach green tea with strawberry popping boba is my favorite.

BloodandGlitter · 19/06/2023 23:00

You can buy bubble milk tea in most Chinese supermarkets for about £1.50. I've just had a Taro one tonight, delicious and if you don't like the tapioca balls you don't have to add them as they're in a separate packet. You do drink it hot though.
Matcha milk tea is also amazing hot and I keep sachets of it in my bag in case I'm stuck at MILs and need a drink.

Xmasbaby11 · 19/06/2023 23:03

Dd 9 and 11 are obsessed, as I would have been at their age!

they like the juice ones like mango / lemon with popping strawberry xxx bubbles. They are a fiver around here but customised so you can select the sweetness and I guess in between a drink and a snack.

MyEyesAreBleeding · 19/06/2023 23:10

The bubbles are like trying to suck snot up a straw

IheartNiles · 19/06/2023 23:12

Frogspawn floating around in a swamp of shitty water.

FrazzledFirefly · 19/06/2023 23:16

"Bubble Tea! Fucking bubble tea!"

Love Liz.

Sorry, don't have anything constructive to add 😉

kagerou · 19/06/2023 23:24

Sounds like a lot of people on here have only tried the faddy or chain brand ones. When done properly there is no reason they should be unhealthy or filled with e-numbers .

Tips would be to try to find a Taiwanese style one that makes them fresh .

As for flavours it's up to you what your preferences are

Pearl milk tea is the original and it is good , my favourite is half sugar taro and coconut milk tea with xi mi (west rice) , cold lemon tea with sweet juice balls is a very refreshing option especially in the recent heat etc.

Choose the sweetness level you like and enjoy

Haha the cheese foam tastes surprisingly good , its made of slightly salted cream cheese so think more cheesecake than cheddar . Not sure you really get it in UK but popular in Asia

Helena189 · 19/06/2023 23:29

I don't understand what it is, are the bubbles edible or do you just drink the tea through a straw or something?

User10932 · 19/06/2023 23:32

DDs order is always mango fruit tea 30% with apple bubbles.
can’t say I’d ever go out my way to have one (esp the price!) but DD is obsessed 🙄

WTFAreYouForReal · 19/06/2023 23:34

It's disgusting.
