Vegan given butter in restaurant

Went out for dinner this evening with dd’s.
dd1 has been a vegan for years. The rest of us are vegetarian, although I’m verging on veganism too tbh.

we went for dinner this evening, to our local. We often eat here and know the staff really well. So they know our dietary requirements.

this evening we ordered a dish and were all eating it. The waitress came over laughing and told us it had butter in it!!

dd1 was horrified and began to get upset. The waitress took the dish away and went to the kitchen. She returned and said “the kitchen are making another but they’ve got cross with me and asked why I told you it had butter in it!’

this has infuriated me!! Firstly given butter when told vegan. But even worse..told by the waitress that the kitchen would’ve not told the customer it had butter in it!!

AIBU?? What if dd had an allergy????

my dd2 has severe allergies (has had anaphylaxis a few times now!) so how am I ever going to trust them now??

I don’t know what to do! I don’t want to make a fuss as it’s our local in a very insular community

I’d just stop going there to eat. Don’t sound like the kind of place that takes dietary requirements seriously.

In terms of the horse meat, not great that it was wrong meat, but also it wasn't fit for consumption as we don't eat horse only and thewould have been treated with AB etc etc

The Germans, Swiss and many other countries routinely eat horse meat, so there clearly is a supply chain for horse meat where the withdrawal period for antibiotics has been observed and it is otherwise fit for human consumption.

The primary concern around the horsemeat scandal was around mislabelling - because it's fraud, because religious issues (pork DNA was also found in 'beef' burgers) and it being fundamentally not what the customer ordered, rather than around human health.

So its ok to sell people something other than what they were asking for, as long as they don't know..... ok! Got it

Obviously not, but the way some people are going on it was like they laced it with cyanide rather than butter.

Tell the owner you are not happy, ask for the meal to be taken off the bill and then decide if you want to return or not.

Getting infuriated over this? geez come on!

I'm vegan, and I'd be livid. It's totally unacceptable. Those saying she should calm down just don't understand. I wish they could imagine being told they'd consumed something they are ethically opposed to. Maybe dog. Maybe their own dog. See if they are so chill then

LOL

Yes being given butter in a meal is just the same as being fed their own pet.

This thread is bonkers.

Just a note - I'm vegan, I'm pretty pragmatic, stuff happens. But, quite a few vegans do become intolerant to dairy. It now makes me unwell if I have it accidentally. (After years of being vegan it also tastes rancid, exactly how sour milk or butter tasted to me in my pre-vegan lurpak loving days!)

You clearly have no clue.

A dietary choice is far from an allergy . While you have all the right to be upset , it’s a mistake made easy , specially if you are all vegetarian and only one vegan .

Omg the drama 😂😂😂

They obviously remembered your dietary preferences if they laughed about the butter. And they've probably fed you non-vegan things in the past without telling you. I would have Karen'd my way to the manager to complain, and I certainly wouldn't trust them again. While it's not a serious allergy this time, if they're lax enough to forget not to put butter in it, they're lax enough to forget why they shouldn't.

I am able to differentiate between medical needs and stubbon wants. Seemingly many vegans cannot.

IamMoodyBlue · 30/09/2023 16:09

Kitchen staff telling the server they should've lied to a customer?
I don't know how anyone could consider that reasonable!
Where would you draw the line?
Not tell a vegetarian the lentil soup was made with chicken stock?
Not telling a Muslim, a Jew or a vegetarian the bean soup has bacon in it?

I am shocked by how many people think this disrespectful behaviour is acceptable.
