To be shocked malnutrition children

allabouttheboy · 18/06/2023 02:15

Just read that children living in catered asylum seeker hotels are suffering malnutrition because both they and the adults are not being given enough food. Some parents have been rummaging through rubbish bins to try and find enough food for their children. And some schools are giving children two lunches to try and make sure they get enough to eat.
The private hostels are paid well by the government to provide accommodation and food. So they are deliberately not giving enough food to maximise profit.
I have read teachers saying they have been trying to shout about this, but no one is listening.
I am shocked that this is happening to children living in Britain.

P.s. an asylum seeker in catered accommodation gets £8.24 a week for all other costs apart from food and housing.

You aren't supposed to live on it though, it's supposed to be a temporary stopgap. To tide you over temporarily until you sort yourself out.

I do hope that you never suffer a setback, out of the blue. Illness, disability, loss of a partner and their financial contribution, etc. and find yourself dependent on the state and no realistic means of “sorting yourself out”.

alloutofluck · 19/06/2023 08:45

Some of the comments are awful and some people have obviously not read the short thread.
These children do not have malnutrition just because of poor quality food. They are not getting enough food to eat. It is why some schools are giving children two lunches. And why some schools are weighing children regularly as they are loosing weight. These are children who were a healthy weight when they arrived in the uk. They did not arrive here with malnutrition as alleged. They developed malnutrition because a private firm, someone on the thread said serco run these hostels, are deliberately starving children for profit.

But I can see from this thread why it is allowed to happen. Various people on this thread do not care that children are being starved for profit.

It does not achieve that. People just get into debt and can start sinking financially even if they fairly soon get another job.

Who reads about a private firm starving children for profit and decides to post blaming poor people for having children?

Racists.

Some people become disabled and can never sort themselves out.

Some graduate from university with a STEM degree during a recession, go home to their rural-dwelling parents, and struggle to get a job because of the shocking state of public transport. I remember going to the nearest town on the bus for an interview for a min wage cleaning job and being knocked back because the buses wouldn't get me in in time for the Sunday morning shift start. Have you ever tried taking driving lessons whilst on benefits?

Some lived in a single employer town that didn't even exist until the pit was dug, then the pit closed and there was no work for miles.

I hope that Flustercuckoo does suffer that kind of set back. She can come back a year in to being on the dole and tell us all her secrets for surviving that without ending up suicidal or ill. Long-term benefits claimants would greatly appreciate such advice from someone who clearly knows something about surviving that system that the rest of us don't.

Flustercuckoo · 19/06/2023 11:57

Disabled people get more than the bare minimum they give to healthy adults on UC. There's a reason healthy adults get the bare minimium, its because you aren't supposed to live on it long term.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/06/2023 12:01

I am sick of the pathetic apologists for this corrupt, useless, lying government.Angry Get some self esteem and up your standards instead of making excuses for the cunts.

Being disabled costs more so disabled people on benefits are often still on or below the bread line. People have died because they had health conditions that made them extra-vulnerable to the effects of poverty but were still deemed fit to work and hence were not given disability benefits. Errol Graham, David Clapsom, and Amy Driver all died because they were on benefits, could not afford to eat, and had medical conditions that exacerbated this.

"You aren't supposed to live on it long term" is not an excuse for these preventable deaths.

The sanctions regime is particularly cruel because it makes no allowance whatsoever for life circumstances or illness stopping you fr attending. I left my wallet on the bus, it was handed in at the depot minus the cash that was in it, but between losing it and getting it back I had no money to get the bus to my JSA appointment. I was sanctioned because in the eyes of the assessor I could have walked the twelve mile round trip along 60mph rural roads with no footpaths. I was sanctioned, on top of losing the cash that was in the wallet. If I had been living independently instead of with parents, I would have had no money for weeks and would not have eaten.

This govt and its predecessors, both Labour and Tory, have used the unemployed as a punching bag to win votes via the "scrounger" narrative for so long that people have forgotten that the unemployed are actually human beings.

AuntieJune · 19/06/2023 13:20

Malnutrition is not the same as undernutrition. Malnutrition means you're not getting the right food, it's a catch all term.

Undernutrition means you're not getting enough calories, which is what most people think of when they hear malnutrition. It can lead to stunting (not reaching height targets) or wasting (not reaching weight targets). Overnutrition means you're getting too many calories. These are both forms of malnutrition.

Nutrient deficiency is where you're getting enough calories but not enough of the nutritients your body needs. So a child could be a healthy BMI or overweight/obese but malnourished because they're deficient in iron, magnesium, zinc etc.

Many, many children in the UK are malnourished because their diets are bad, even if they're not thin. So a child who doesn't eat fruit and veg regularly might look a normal weight but will be much more susceptible to illness because they don't get the right nutrients.

Which was supposed to be happening to these kids?

Wasley · 19/06/2023 13:21

Maybe the food is not halal or maybe it's just not culturally what they are used too so they struggle to eat it . Maybe they just can't stomach greasy chips and chicken nuggets. I'm surprised the Muslim community hasn't kicked up a fuss or helped out with food . Saying that its ultimately the government's fault for not stepping up .

Good point I'm not working due to redundancy and my hb has been signed off sick due to a minor stroke. All this out of our control. How we would have coped years ago I don't know . Luckily we have savings to tide us over until I get a job and he goes back to work.

I have an idea. We could send the "send them back" posters to the places that the refugees come from. It would be cultural exchange, a bit like "Wife Swap". Clearly, the "send them back" types wouldn't have any problem at all going to Uganda or somewhere like that. After all, they think that Uganda's an OK place to send women and children back to”

What a very good idea.

Goodness no. The poor Ugandan people don't deserve that on top of everything. Keep the arseholes where they are.

Both under nutrition (they are losing weight), and malnutrition (being given meals consisting of a chicken nugget and 7 chips). As you would know, if you had read the linked article in the OP.

The Muslim community near me wanted to help prepare meals for them, but they were not allowed.

CheeseTouch · 19/06/2023 23:54

I am sickened by the thought of children not getting enough to eat.

Brokendaughter · 20/06/2023 00:49

Why would you expect this govt to treat refugee or migrant children any better than they treat children who are citizens?

I regularly see families on 'benefits' (with full time jobs) who can't afford to eat every day, while the council rush to take them to court because they can't afford to pay the council tax, thus pushing them even further into debt.

You know the tax man & local govt always get their cut first no matter how much they bleed the population.

I believe the only reason the govt pay out anything in benefits at all, is because if they stopped giving people the lowest subsistence rate they can get away with, there would be a massive explosion in crime.
People won't just sit there & starve to death when they have nothing left to lose except in a minority of cases.
The amounts paid to disabled people would be enough for a basic but not luxurious life IF they had magically free of all cost disabilities.
By the time they've paid for the non negotiable things that they need because of their disabilities however, they are generally just as badly off as every other claimant (or sometimes worse off).

Just don't kid yourself any of it would be better under a different govt.
They all have rich donor friends they intend to repay with cushy contracts when they get into power, so it will just be same shit, different day.

"Free takeaway from shops", you mean theft?

So children have to risk a criminal record and time in YOI to eat? That's not OK.
