To be shocked malnutrition children

allabouttheboy · 18/06/2023 02:15

Just read that children living in catered asylum seeker hotels are suffering malnutrition because both they and the adults are not being given enough food. Some parents have been rummaging through rubbish bins to try and find enough food for their children. And some schools are giving children two lunches to try and make sure they get enough to eat.
The private hostels are paid well by the government to provide accommodation and food. So they are deliberately not giving enough food to maximise profit.
I have read teachers saying they have been trying to shout about this, but no one is listening.
I am shocked that this is happening to children living in Britain.

P.s. an asylum seeker in catered accommodation gets £8.24 a week for all other costs apart from food and housing.

This remind me of the shocking food parcels that were distributed to children during the school holidays in the pandemic. Grim. Unforgivable.

Eviebeans · 18/06/2023 14:44

Things like this can happen when we close our eyes to what’s going on - somewhere along the way we’ve lost our natural curiosity about what’s going on for others- and our kindness to want to do anything about it.
I know that children who “were born here” are also living in awful situations- none of it is right. What on earth has happened to us all that we can hear of a child suffering and not care or to try to do something about it.

The majority aren't asylum seekers, they are migrants under pretence of asylum who will disappear the first chance they get.

The harsher conditions we have on arrival, the better to deter them.

I live near Dover and regularly see them all over the m20 and a299, running away across fields.

Let's starve children, how lovely of you

Flustercuckoo · 18/06/2023 16:52

If we can't feed our own how are we supposed to feed the rest that come here?

There isn't an endless pot of money.

Housing is in crisis. Schools are are breaking point. The NHS may as well not exist. Children already here are starving and living in poverty. Ood banks can't cope. It's irresponsible to encourage more to come here.

Same as someone that can't feed or provide for the kids they've already got shouldn't have more, we shouldn't be taking in more people that can't contribute or provide for themselves.

SatelliteStomper · 18/06/2023 16:58

We can 'feed our own'. The government (the ones you voted for, I bet) chooses not to.

I live on the east Kent coast. I have never seen 'them' around the a299 or 'running across fields'. Utter shite.

This. You can feed everyone. The UK is actually a rich country. But only if you are a money grubbing Tory donor.

Veryverycalmnow · 18/06/2023 17:15

I'm always shocked on this kind of thread that the ability to care for other humans/ have a bit of compassion is not something that comes naturally to everyone!
Some reactions are disgusting! I'm so glad there are also sensible and considerate replies too.

Is there something we can do to help these people? I would sign a petition if anyone can post one, or is it best to write to politicians?

What on earth are you on about?? We can afford all of those things!! We aren’t a third world Country, it’s all about choices, our Government for the last 13 years has been making shitty choices.

Northernsouloldies · 18/06/2023 18:31

If we can't feed our own... Classic racist opening line and you just know that they label food bank, benefits claimants as scroungers. Back in your box Billy Britain.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 18/06/2023 18:42

We don't. And yet they are still desperate enough to come here.

howrudeforme · 18/06/2023 18:46

I’m afraid I’m not surprised that this is happening to increase profit.

I also think that malnutrition comes from eating badly and asylum seekers are living in these places for a long time ie eating non home cooked food.

Similar when people are put up in temporary accommodation by the authorities. Food banks are often asking for food that can just be heated on an electric ring rather than ingredients that make up a meal.

It’s heartbreaking. Food poverty is a massive issue. A parent can buy their child a box of chips with cheese. Imagine that sort of food multiple times a week. Impact on health/development etc.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 18/06/2023 18:47

I have an idea. We could send the "send them back" posters to the places that the refugees come from. It would be cultural exchange, a bit like "Wife Swap". Clearly, the "send them back" types wouldn't have any problem at all going to Uganda or somewhere like that. After all, they think that Uganda's an OK place to send women and children back to.

Danikm151 · 18/06/2023 18:49

A big problem is the gov says how much money do you need to run this for us. Provides it and then they’ve done their job in their eyes. Nobody is checking on conditions or the reality of how much things cost.

Too many companies have shareholders to keep happy so will maximise profits.

Throwncrumbs · 18/06/2023 18:49

caringcarer · 18/06/2023 02:39

@allabouttheboy, you say not enough food, very little money, yet they stand around the accommodation smoking. Where does the money come from for these cigarettes? I have friends who live in the next road to one of these hotels and they tell me they see the refugees stood around smoking. They also beg and harass people as they go by. Sometimes spitting at them if they don't give money. Some do give money but instead of buying food for their children they choose to buy cigarettes. I'm also pretty sure there are some children who were born in the UK who are also hungry and would like two dinners at school but they don't get offered them.

Pretty sure some of them arrived here with dietary problems/malnutrition. It’s also a little known fact that obese people can have malnutrition because they don’t eat enough of the right food groups!

verdantverdure · 18/06/2023 19:06

I bet the Tory crony who got the juicy contract to house asylum seekers doesn't have malnutrition.

All we can do is not vote for the party who runs things this way.

Outsourcing is almost always more expensive and less effective than insourcing, once your organisation gets above a certain size. You are paying the other company's profits and have no oversight of quality assurance.

WasabiWinner · 18/06/2023 19:33

Huh.
While I think government policy is despicable (keeping asylum seekers in limbo for years, preventing them from working, not enough food) I do raise an eyebrow at all the banging on about 'women and children'.

The majority of asylum seekers are adult men, by a large majority (https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/migration-to-the-uk-asylum/). Of course, maybe the men are fitter, stronger and more likely to survive the journey, so the plan is to bring their entire family over?

And despite, again the banging on about 'our fair share' the UK ranked 6th in the absolute numbers of people it protected in 2021.

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/migration-to-the-uk-asylum/

Asylum and refugee resettlement in the UK - Migration Observatory

This briefing sets out key facts and figures, as well as information gaps, relating to migration to the UK, specifically refugees and asylum seekers. It looks at overall numbers, characteristics of asylum seekers, and outcomes of asylum applications.

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2023 19:35

We don’t have food shortages in this country we have a lack of fair distribution.
I dont care how much asylum seekers or refugees or anyone else spends on cigarettes we should still feed their children properly

LadyKenya · 18/06/2023 19:38

Countingdowntodecember · 18/06/2023 03:56

This.

Do you honestly think that because some asylum seekers smoke, it’s ok for children to be malnourished?

Yep, as soon as I saw the username I was not surprised to read the post. Nothing caring about whoever that person is.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 18/06/2023 20:07

And I know other children are living in poverty.
But in this case private companies are being paid to provide enough food by us the taxpayers. There is no reason for this to happen except the greed of those firms and a public that does not care.

No doubt the directors of those companies will be tory donators, probably on the list for honours in the future. Wonder how many other tory donations are literally taken from the mouth of children and the pockets of the tax payers.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 18/06/2023 23:21

@WasabiWinner The OP started the thread to talk about refugee children being starved.

It's not just kids seeking asylum. We live on a housing estate very close to a very poor area so the majority of the kids at school are from low income homes where there are no working parents. The school have a free breakfast club, then put buttered toast out for the kids at the office on the way in to school for kids who can't get to breakfast club as there is no one up to get them ready. They have free fruit and milk at break then free lunches. We have a quarterly donation event where kids clothing and toys are handed out and a benefits advice service is present to chat at that. They provide PE kit and sandshoes for every pupil. It's still not enough and my friend who is a TA found a little girls shoe that she had walked in with had entirely disintegrated and had to go out and buy her new shoes. The level of poverty that far too many children are living in our country is disgusting.

This

It's definitely not just asylum seekers. It's people who have worked and paid into the system left to rot too.

An adult on UC gets less than £350 per month - some have mortgages and there is no help. If you fall on hard times and lose your job or become disabled suddenly you're stuffed. My friend lost her home as she had to wait 18 months for an assessment.

This is what you get for voting Tory.

verdantverdure · 19/06/2023 08:38

Someone on Twitter says a couple get £525 on Universal Credit plus money off their council tax.

It boggles my mind.

£525 wouldn't pay my bills.

No wonder people are surrendering their pets in record numbers.

I'm surprised they aren't also surrendering their children.

verdantverdure · 19/06/2023 08:40

Also I read that due to the new immigration bill asylum seekers will just never get a decision.

We'll be "supporting them" like this forever

Or until they go to Rwanda.
