To be shocked malnutrition children

allabouttheboy · 18/06/2023 02:15

Just read that children living in catered asylum seeker hotels are suffering malnutrition because both they and the adults are not being given enough food. Some parents have been rummaging through rubbish bins to try and find enough food for their children. And some schools are giving children two lunches to try and make sure they get enough to eat.
The private hostels are paid well by the government to provide accommodation and food. So they are deliberately not giving enough food to maximise profit.
I have read teachers saying they have been trying to shout about this, but no one is listening.
I am shocked that this is happening to children living in Britain.

P.s. an asylum seeker in catered accommodation gets £8.24 a week for all other costs apart from food and housing.

Don't serco have the contracts?

allabouttheboy · 18/06/2023 11:34

Is it serco? Then it is serco deliberately starving children to make an increased profit.

It's a shame people don't take more self responsibility, but as is and some adults have more children then they can provide for it will always be thus.

People's circumstances can change after the children are born. Stop blaming the poor for their misery.

allabouttheboy · 18/06/2023 12:13

Who reads about a private firm starving children for profit and decides to post blaming poor people for having children?

I do wish you'd change your MN name. I look at the awful post, note the name and every time think, "no not caring".

@MrsTerryPratchett - exactly what I was thinking.

romdowa · 18/06/2023 12:27

It is awful what they feed these people and I know here in Ireland that refugees can be in direct provision for 5/6 years but I've always wondered if it's such a bad place for children. They why do they continue to have more and more children while living in these places. Why would you subject even more innocent children to that kind of life. At some stage the parents have to shoulder some of the responsibilities too.

alloutofluck · 18/06/2023 12:29

Some of the comments on here show why serco can get away with literally starving children for profit.

Unananana · 18/06/2023 12:33

This is what you get when you vote Tory.

Whatt · 18/06/2023 12:34

I watched a documentary that showed that the government only started to care about food quality and feeding the nation when it came to WW1 and the intake of soldiers were malnourished. Which could've affected the outcome of the war.

So they started to make sure that the public had a certain level of food for nutrition.

So not for general welfare but for future warfare. So that if needed, they have a strong solider stock.

But often this isn't the case. I was born into poverty, one of many siblings and it wasn't uncommon in extended family and the community I grew up in- anyone suggesting otherwise is ignorant whilst parading as open minded.

In cases like yours, it's not the child's fault that they are poor. So still stop blaming the poor for their misery.

This is awful!

Thank you for sharing because I had no idea.

Social injustice is part of the tory makeup. Got to keep those profits up, no longer an mp old boy, have seat on the board for all the favours you done us.

This is exactly what's behind it. Tory corruption!

Maybe you could open your house to them, like homes for Ukraine. That could be you doing your duty for England and would free up hotels for the British and the elderly.

Flustercuckoo · 18/06/2023 13:32

Why should I do that? These people aren't my responsibility and as I see it, aren't the responsibility of the UK tax payer either.

The fact their isn't a scheme is why people don't. Pure racism.
This has been an issue for years and is abhorrent. The fact anyone is making a profit out of refugees and asylum seekers is beyond vile as a starting point.

@allabouttheboy, you say not enough food, very little money, yet they stand around the accommodation smoking. Where does the money come from for these cigarettes? I have friends who live in the next road to one of these hotels and they tell me they see the refugees stood around smoking. They also beg and harass people as they go by. Sometimes spitting at them if they don't give money. Some do give money but instead of buying food for their children they choose to buy cigarettes. I'm also pretty sure there are some children who were born in the UK who are also hungry and would like two dinners at school but they don't get offered them.

You do realise some people will pick up ends of cigarettes and root through ashtrays to get other peoples leftovers to smoke

I'm sure any of these refugees would love to go home if it were safe for them to do so. Do you not read the news, and see some of the horror that people around the world are living in? Only yesterday I was listening to a news story about boys being burnt to death in a school in Uganda that was attacked by militants. The girls' dormitory wasn't locked, and as they ran to escape the flames they were hacked to death with machetes, or abducted (and you can only imagine what will happen to them next).

Asylum seekers aren't allowed to work so I'm not sure what you expect them to do.

The UK doesn't take as big a proportion of refugees as other civilised countries - we should all do our part.

Some of our elderly are doing pretty well thanks to the triple lock, perhaps we should be redistributing the wealth from millionaire pensioners before we decide to take even more from the poorest in our society?

Flustercuckoo · 18/06/2023 14:20

The majority aren't asylum seekers, they are migrants under pretence of asylum who will disappear the first chance they get.

The harsher conditions we have on arrival, the better to deter them.

I live near Dover and regularly see them all over the m20 and a299, running away across fields.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/06/2023 14:40

I’m not surprised, sadly. If a government doesn’t care that millions of its citizens are living in poverty and no doubt malnourished, it’s very unlikely that they’ll care about “invaders”.

This shower is despicable and a GE can’t come soon enough.
