Shamed for going to Pizza Express

Pizzaexpressshame · 17/06/2023 19:15

This has been on my mind for a few days. Newish friend and I met up one time and I told her how I was in the same area just a week ago with a friend and we had lunch at pizza express. We planned to meet but not much else, so when we got there we were hungry and PE was just the next thing we walked by.

She pulled a face, saying why pizza express, she knows better places, why did you go there etc. A couple weeks later I met her again at a place she chose and had been to before, which also did pizza and pasta. After we ate she said to me 'So what do you think of this place? I find it much better than Pizza Express'. I just said the food was nice but nothing I hadn't had before.

I felt so looked down upon as if I needed to be shown a better place to have lunch at. I find this friend generally exhausting, as in every conversation, every topic, she needs to come out on top. She had also made some racist remarks a few months ago, which I let slide.

Anyway, I have decided I let go of things friend and know how I am going to do it if she wants to meet up again. I won't ghost her. It was on my mind all week, but I feel really good about myself now. Putting myself first and being assertive. I'll find myself another new friend as I don't feel great around her.

Franco Manca was right next to pizza express. I didn't mind which, but my friend wanted pasta so we went to pizza express. I didn't tell that the other friend...I think she'd faint 😂

I wouldn’t have let any racist remarks slide and wouldn’t have met up with her again after that.
The snobbery and need to “educate” you over a bloody pizza is so patronising and I don’t do well with that either!! I wouldn’t see her again.

Exactly.

LadyKenya · 17/06/2023 19:23

So you would not have a problem with her making racist remarks, but her snobbery cannot be overlooked?

Yeah, that's not a good look, OP.

RedNosedReindeer · 17/06/2023 19:34

readbooksdrinktea · 17/06/2023 19:32

Yeah, that's not a good look, OP.

Agreed.

ChocChipHandbag · 17/06/2023 19:36

@readbooksdrinktea she’s explained her thinking, give it a rest.

Pizzaexpressshame · 17/06/2023 19:36

I was in denial about the racist remarks. Basically, we walked past one of those cheap takeaways and she said she'd get something there if the people were Chinese but they were Indian/SE Asian and so she would never eat there. She also doesnt want to go to a Turkish place because she doesn't trust them. I feel really awful about it and it honestly never left me over the past months.

DisforDarkChocolate · 17/06/2023 19:38

I can't believe it was Pizza Express that pushed you over the edge and not the racism.

Pizzaexpressshame · 17/06/2023 19:40

@DisforDarkChocolate I can't believe it either. But I live and learn and there won't be second chances for people making such remarks in the future.

You are being unreasonable for letting racist remarks slide while getting your knickers in a bunch over pizza express, ffs.

BelindaBears · 17/06/2023 19:45

People get really snobby about chains. You know what you’re getting with Pizza Express (they’re also good at handling gluten free IME) and sometimes that’s what you want. Not every meal has to be an experience.

Therandomtrekker · 17/06/2023 19:48

Pizza is a warm sandwich, they do it well.

The one thing that pizza express does well is consistency! You can go into one anywhere in the country and you don’t have to worry about what you’re going to get.
Kids love it, the staff are always friendly and whilst sometimes I do go to the better restaurant that is half an hour down the road for pizza ( for my food snob OH) he’ll also happily go to go to PE.

starsparkle08 · 17/06/2023 19:49

She sounds like a snob as far as food goes

the racist remarks . You don’t say what but these would bother me more

ZebraDilemma · 17/06/2023 19:52

Is that you Andrew?

ZebraLyghts · 17/06/2023 19:54

BennyBlancofromtheBronx · 17/06/2023 19:19

You can put up with your pal being racist but not her slating pizza?

To quote Alan Partridge, "I'll tolerate one, but not both" 😆

Highdaysandholidays1 · 17/06/2023 19:56

@ChocChipHandbag I've been eating the Fiorentina for about 30 years. Absolutely wouldn't want a friend who thought Pizza Express wasn't good enough for her. Plus the yummy tiramisu...

CurlewKate · 17/06/2023 19:56

So you let racism slide but are bothered by her views on Pizza Express? Riiiiiigggght.

MarvelMrs · 17/06/2023 19:59

Pizza Express is all about the tiramisu. The pizzas are just to be eaten so you can get to the desserts.😉

viques · 17/06/2023 20:02

Nothing wrong with PE, though I will never forgive them from taking my favourite pizza off the menu for absolutely no reason. We used to like the one in ear Leicester Square that had a jazz pianist and rather grand loos.

ChocChipHandbag · 17/06/2023 19:36

@readbooksdrinktea she’s explained her thinking, give it a rest.

Nah. Besides, I don't know why you're @ me. I'm not exactly the only one on the thread who finds it strange.

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 20:02

MarvelMrs · 17/06/2023 19:59

Pizza Express is all about the tiramisu. The pizzas are just to be eaten so you can get to the desserts.😉

I've never managed to finish a pizza there yet alone order dessert- too busy stuffing my gave with dough balls at the start!

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 17/06/2023 20:03

You let racist remarks slide (let me guess why, because they didn’t impact you at all) but you’re here crying over Pizza Express. Bye!

CorvusPurpureus · 17/06/2023 20:04

You haven't 'been shamed for eating at Pizza Express'.

You've fallen out with a snobbish racist because you have higher standards regarding who you socialise with. Definitely bin her.

Anyway, PE is great for reasonable food for the years when you're arse deep in pushchairs. I wouldn't take a date or a mate there, but they do a very respectable job for young families.

viques · 17/06/2023 20:04

One word. Affogato. Also that thing they do with figs. Oh more than one word then.

SynchOrSwim · 17/06/2023 20:04

Mmm doughballs, pollo ad astra...

MammaTo · 17/06/2023 20:05

Are you sure she was “looking down” on you and wasn’t just making conversation perhaps? She might consider herself a bit of a foodie (so to speak, I like pizza express so no quarms from me).
