To think UK should have moved on from carpeting by this stage

It's gross, it's ugly, it's high maintenance, and in a world of global warming, it increasingly feels like a dust and burning sun heat trap.
Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?

Try living in a very old stone house at the top of Scotland in the winter. Having carpets helps with heat and to feel cosy. Plus, suspended floors can sounds so loud with no carpet. I think it very much depends on the house. We have carpet throughout in the house we are renovating, including underfloor insulation and I know it will still be cold.

Living in a cottage around 300 years old I couldn't imagine wanting anything but carpet in the lounge and bedrooms (hoovered daily, vaxed every 2/3 months) Stone flooring in the kitchen and utility - it's marvellous at hiding the muck. Each to their own and all that.

When I had hard flooring in my lounge I’d get dust balls like tumbleweed accumulating on a regular basis. Despite regular sweeping it was a never ending battle. I changed to carpet and have never regretted it. A good quality vacuum and a carpet cleaner keeps it fresh and it feels so nice with bare feet.

I grew up with carpeting and a cat. I now have no carpeting and 2 cats. I notice the cat hairs much more now than before.
