To think UK should have moved on from carpeting by this stage

It's gross, it's ugly, it's high maintenance, and in a world of global warming, it increasingly feels like a dust and burning sun heat trap.
Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?

OP posts:
WomblingTree86 · 17/06/2023 18:59

People have carpets because it keeps houses warmer in winter. Given that central heating also contributes to global warming, having carpets might be the lesser of two evils. Also, houses without carpets upstairs are noisy.

My office is all hard floors and walls everywhere. It's an acoustic disaster. We're open to the public and I can hear a fussy toddler on the other side of a different floor.

@EnthENd I bet it's actually the CEO.

Clarich007 · 17/06/2023 08:58

Recently I changed from carpets and curtains, to blinds and solid cherry wood floors. It's been a revalation. Feels so much lighter and more modern.
I will never go back to curtains, that's for sure.

@@Clarich007

what type of blinds did you get?

are yours old floor boards or is it some kind of modern flooring?

im trying to decide what to do in here, can't find anything I love.

Go eat, you're hangry.

Considering the time it was posted, I assume drunk.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/06/2023 19:19

This is just fashion. Swags and drapes on windows were massive in the 80’s and 90’s. Now people want blinds.

It will all swing round. Same as carpets and wooden laid floors in herringbone pattern. It’s just fashion.

Clingfilm · 17/06/2023 19:54

Go and visit in January, you'll be grateful of all that soft furnishing when it's -4 out...

If we are going to work in sweeping generalisations…

Why are people in the UK still obsessed with cats? They are dirty and disgusting, drag dead animals into your house, and wipe their filthy arses all over the house. They are terrible for the environment and local wildlife and shit all over the neighbourhood”

Cleaner than dogs. Our eldest’s dog eats the cat’s poo if she gets to it first.

Our cats don’t wipe their arses in the house. Seen lots of dogs dragging their buns a Ross carpeted floors though.
Ours also do t shit all over the neighbourhood because we contain them in our garden. Can’t account for wildlife, we do t see any. Seen lots of threads on here though about people killing bats, pigeons, spiders, etc. Every species has its pros and cons.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/06/2023 20:03

Bums, not buns 🤣

My personal opinion is that with climate change the priority long term is going to be keeping houses cool, not keeping them warm. Particularly in the mid 30 degree summers that are going to become the norm over the next few years.

I live in a country where we have more hot days than the UK and carpet is common here. I can't say I've noticed houses being any hotter with carpet than without. Why do so many posters seem to think the UK is going to become the hottest place on earth in a few years time?

loislovesstewie · 17/06/2023 20:08

I used to have house trained rabbits. Cleaner than both cats and dogs, but do they like to chew electric cables!

Ishallgototheball · 17/06/2023 11:15

Same as a walk on the beach barefoot, all those crustacea’s rotting shells, carcasses, rotting seaweed all mixed in with sand that has never been bleached, totally unhygienic.
You’re Unilever’s perfect customer, scared of your own shadow and lost all faith in your own immune system.
Apart from humans every other species survives without a product-based hygiene routine.

This has to be one of the best posts I've read on MN! Well said @Ishallgototheball

Swrigh1234 · 17/06/2023 15:55

There is nothing wrong with carpets per se. But animals and carpets don’t mix and it’s disgusting to walk with shoes in carpet. In fact anyone who wears outdoor shoes inside has domestic hygiene issues.

Here we go again..... In that case the majority of people I know have "domestic hygiene issues", as I have literally never been to a house where I have been requested to remove my shoes, other than when a large group of people have visited the house to look through it (real estate open days, a group visiting an historic house etc.).

TheHateIsNotGood · 17/06/2023 20:23

I'm super-gross as I walk around barefoot outside then walk barefoot around my house without cleaning my feet first.

AllyCart · 17/06/2023 20:26

@Finlesswonder

It's gross...

What a pathetic, childish way to describe anything.

Are you an American teenage girl?

RampantIvy · 17/06/2023 23:23

I don't ask people to remove their shoes, but people do anyway. I live in a part of the world that is usually rather damp, so people just remove shoes out of habit and politeness.

In the spirit of MN one-up womanship I have original Victorian shutters. They are brilliant in cold weather.

I also have carpets, cats and wear shoes indoors. There are some absolutely bonkers posts on here.

JustOneCornettoPlease · 18/06/2023 12:25

I like wooden floors downstairs and carpets in bedrooms.

Carpets in bathroom and kitchens is very odd. Even if only soapy water lands on the floor, it’s not nice having wet carpet. Especially in our usual damp climate.

I prefer hotel rooms not to have carpet. I feel like carpet can hide dirt better than a wooden floor.

And people who have cats and dogs will never have a clean home. It’s not possible. It makes me laugh when pet owners insist on a shoe-free home. Really?!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/06/2023 13:22

l had them in my first house in the 80’s and a kitchen carpet in the 90’s. They were fine, didn’t stay damp.

GasPanic · 18/06/2023 14:05

Carpets are a bit disgusting.

They habour filth - just try shampooing one and see what the water looks like.

With kids/animals the spilled food/vomit/piss/crap/hair gets ground into them and is difficult to remove and the smell lingers. Tiles, lvt and wood are easy to clean.

Hard floors can be warm if you get the right underlay. New thermally insulating underlays for wood and laminate with radiation shields are highly insulating.

Carpets also trap pollen and dust. The dust is mainly dead skin cells, which are fed on by carpet mites and a range of other stuff that lives in the average carpet.

Given the above it is surprising why anyone still has them.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2023 14:46

Well, it's a good job I don't have pets or small children or anyone who comes into my house who spills food, vomits, pisses or craps on my floors then @GasPanic.

Carpets aren't unhygienic, people are.

TheKeatingFive · 18/06/2023 16:21

I think you'll find people don't really care about dirt that they can't see and isn't affecting them in any way.

Beauty3102 · 18/06/2023 17:42

Because I have a bad knee. I was knocked over by bouncers in a club and have a metal plate and screws in my tibia. Meaning I can’t kneel on hard surfaces. My arthritis plays up on laminate flooring so yes I will continue to have carpet in my house.

Greenshed · 18/06/2023 17:54

There are some very peculiar ideas from some posters about carpet on this thread. It’s not dirty if you clean it and vacuum it, for example. Disgusting? Really? If it’s properly looked after, then no, it’s not.
It really is down to personal preference as to whether you have carpet or not. Some parts of my house I have carpet down (and keep it clean), other parts have wooden flooring, ceramic tiles, laminate tiles or linoleum. Some rooms I would never have carpet in purely from a hygiene perspective - kitchen, bathroom and downstairs loo - these floors can be wiped over very easily each day to pick up spills, etc, which would be more problematic with carpet.
So what if some people do have carpets, drapes and cushions in their home? They’re not committing any offence. As I say, it’s all down to personal preference - no need to be snippy about it. If it’s not your preference, fine. But wouldn’t it be boring if we were all the same?

Kentucky83 · 18/06/2023 18:13

Because hard flooring anywhere but the kitchen and the bathroom is cold, uncomfortable and unwelcoming. It makes a home look either sterile or filthy, depending on how well the house is kept.
This is, of course, my personal opinion. I like carpets. But I don't think anyone is obsessed with them, I just think different people like different things in their homes. Some people like leather sofas, for instance, while others prefer fabric. Some have wallpaper, others prefer paint. I think it's nice that we have a choice!
