To think UK should have moved on from carpeting by this stage

It's gross, it's ugly, it's high maintenance, and in a world of global warming, it increasingly feels like a dust and burning sun heat trap.
Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?

OP posts:

If we are going to work in sweeping generalisations…

Why are people in the UK still obsessed with cats? They are dirty and disgusting, drag dead animals into your house, and wipe their filthy arses all over the house. They are terrible for the environment and local wildlife and shit all over the neighbourhood.

pickledandpuzzled · 17/06/2023 15:37

If there's no carpet, what happens with stairs and landing?

Swrigh1234 · 17/06/2023 15:52

And to think people used to carpet their bathrooms. Gross.

Swrigh1234 · 17/06/2023 15:55

There is nothing wrong with carpets per se. But animals and carpets don’t mix and it’s disgusting to walk with shoes in carpet. In fact anyone who wears outdoor shoes inside has domestic hygiene issues.

Fine. We’re clearly disgusting. Happy and unjudgemental though.

What though? What should we be concerned about?

Macaroni46 · 17/06/2023 16:18

Now what I don't understand, being a bear of little brain, is how having a hard wood floor with a rug is better than having a carpet?
Whenever I've had that set up I've found it harder to keep clean as it's much easier to hoover a fitted carpet than a stand alone rug 🤷‍♀️

Caspianberg · 17/06/2023 16:33

@NatashaDancing - I’m not in uk. Most German/ Swiss/ Austria homes have guest slippers, and if they don’t, it’s still shoes off. Still no carpets in general

What do you actually think will happen if you wear shoes inside?

One of my (very) posh in laws told me that taking your shoes off indoors and expecting your guests to do the same is poor etiquette and a sign of being lower class.

Did she tell you why anyone should give a shit?

I can answer that. Nothing happens, nothing at all. I’ve been wearing my shoes indoors ever since I could walk. My parents did too - their combined ages when they died were 196.

Exactly! MN level of hygiene just seems ridiculously extreme!

margegunderson · 17/06/2023 17:38

We deliberately put bathroom carpet in our new bathroom in 1994. It was long pile and intended for bathrooms so didn't do mouldy or anything else. It was bloody lovely. It's a cold room and it was cosy and non slip.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 17/06/2023 17:39

I have a shoeless house, I do find it helps keep things cleaner. Never been in a shoes on house that was so filthy I feared for my health or anything, though. It's a personal preference, innit.

I’ve heard similar.

So have I, but only on mumsnet. Nearly everyone I knows takes their shoes off in the house. I find slippers more comfortable indoors TBH.

There isn’t anything wrong with carpet? Lots of people I know have carpet up the stairs and upstairs itself (bedrooms, not bathrooms) and hard floors downstairs. From a hygiene POV, you just invest in a very good hoover and don’t wear shoes in the house at all so you’re not treading muck throughout. Also, regularly having a professional cleaner to come round and deep clean it helps.

Also, people have carpet because it makes the house/keeps the house warmer in the winter.

This

Even if it's true, it doesn't matter. You're not going to change your socio-economic class by wearing or not wearing your shoes indoors.

To be fair I’ve never seen anyone in their stockinged feet in coverage of Buckingham Palace events…… I’ve never been inside there myself but I have a friend who attended a dinner there and I’m absolutely certain they all kept their shoes on…..

Ah, how can anyone argue with such an equivalent comparison?

‘Why are people in this country still obsessed with carpeting?‘

Carpets carpets carpets. It’s all you hear about. Turn the news on, carpets. Buy a tabloid, carpet gossip. Meet up with friends, after small talk it’s all about the carpets again. Like you OP, I have had enough.

😂 Nicely done. It’s good to be reminded about carpet obsession (TM). If we ever get past comparing our HRT and aching joints, this will be the go-to topic in my friendship group.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 17/06/2023 18:47

What do Mexicans put under their carpets?

Underlay, underlay!

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week. Tip the waitress, try the fish.
