What an idiot (me)

I sold my motorhome to some passers-by (it was old, and not used much). I was knocked down on the price I asked.
They said they were "touring" to buy up unwanted motorhomes to take back (to Ireland) for Ukrainians who had nowhere to live/sleep.
They were in a big shiny brand new pick-up, and at first I was dealing with one Irish giant, then one-by-one, three more got out (all brothers). And the 7y.o. son of one of them. Sweet.

Without tax, they put trade plates on and said that they would have a lorry come to transport it, but did drive it away off down the road; it had started well as new battery in April. But I had o real knowledge of it's mechanical soundness (it would overheat if driven stop-start in heat I remember.)
Bank transfer/FP done while they were there.

Two hours later I get a call (fortunately one of them had taken my number), and apparently it had blown up on the "motorway" (I think, the A1), so the discussion was what did I want to do, but also they also spoke to someone who said it was a heap of shit, but it could go to a "yard"/for spares/be fixed (new engine, gearbox etc etc) at great cost.

They (I was not actually sure which brother I was speaking to; they all sounded like one another....) in the end, said - unless I misunderstood - that they would send it for scrap/spares to a nearby yard (with "a man") and I would send their money back - although not the full amount, "for my trouble". (Also had given me 10% in cash - which I didn't know what to do with....)

When I tried to send the agreed amount, the Bank held it up and I had to speak to Fraud - who said, 1) Buyer Beware - so I was not obliged to given them ANY of the money back (!!!!), 2) The motorhome is probably quite all right, and they are looking to get even more of a bargain.....
They also asked me if I felt intimidated or threatened, or was worried that there would be comeback if I stood my ground..... And I said I was only worried about (in my imagination) what would happen if I didn't.

Anyway the Bank lifted the fraud restriction (by now I had had three messages....) and I decided best to just send all the money back.

And I did. And got a call from one of the brothers (NOT the one who said I didn't need to give it all back) and he didn't even mention the fact I had sent everything to them, so now no motorhome (a mixed blessing, possibly?) and none of the money.... I asked him where "he" was (I think they had split up in various directions, and the one I was speaking to was not the one who had been in the motorhome), and he was on the way to Scotland, but the motorhome broke down in Yorkshire. I also struggled with the accents (proper proper Irish, which I do like), so didn't even really push it, trying to find out what and where. I know I am a fool.

Does anyone think I have been suckered? (I do. And the Fraud guy at the Bank thought I was - and that was before I returned the money.)

There is waaaay more backstory to this but I don't want to ramble, and have someone tell me it's too long, or too complicated, or simply not interesting enough to read.

How much are we talking here??

ConstitutionHill · 16/06/2023 19:32

I guess OP sent the money back as they felt intimidated and these bastards knew where they live. I'm sorry OP!

I suppose someone dumb enough to part with it in the way I did, would also be the one dumb (or weedy) enough to send the money back...

If brave enough to not send the money back in this situation, such a person wouldn't have themselves into this muddle in the first place.

I am a stupid idiot.

Report it as stolen. The police will know who they are.

georgarina · 16/06/2023 19:42

Was it one of those situations where you just panicked and sent the money back to end the interaction?

macchampagne · 16/06/2023 19:43

What an idiot (me) - 100%.

What were you thinking.
you should have at the very least listened to your bank!

BadMotorhomeParent · 16/06/2023 19:44

Crazy as it sounds, I had not though of involving the Police.
Still insured.

For anyone asking, I am not saying the amount. It is in the thousands, but as I said, I was beaten down due to flaws in the body, which were not huge, and I knew about. But no mention of mechanics, which I certainly don't know anything about.

Yes!

I also felt guilty that I had waved them off and then it blew up on the A1.

Apparently.

Report the vehicle stolen and was taken under duress

LinMortisanass · 16/06/2023 19:48

It didn't blow up on the A1. You don't really believe it did, do you? So don't feel guilty. You're the victim of a crime, don't beat yourself up.

GracePalmer33 · 16/06/2023 19:51

WHAT THE HELL. You gave them all the money back? Why?
Of course you've been done. You've given them your motor home.... ??

You see - I'm just not sure.....

I also hate myself, if hadn't been checked properly and would (hence username).
Still want to cry.

But if I hadn't sent the money back, I would have been waiting for one or more of them to show up.

I’m honestly blown away by this.

GracePalmer33 · 16/06/2023 19:54

Call the police.

FunkyMonks · 16/06/2023 19:55

Wow 😬 defiantly call the police they've scammed you big time I'd have told them no to refund don't care how big and intimidating they were there would have been a call to get it recovered and returned before giving money back and even then sold as seen everyone that buys private knows that risk sold as seen.

It's all done now Op just lesson learnt hard way and in future if you go to sell anything of high value sell it to a second hand dealership or get someone else you know and trust to do the selling for you.

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 16/06/2023 19:56

I feel sorry for you as I’d have done the same as I know how intimidating this type of person can be! When we sold our car, three men came to our house (lockdown time!) we let them in the back garden and they gave us cash which I was scared to count in front of them so looked at it and said ok! They then sat in the car and the massive Range Rover they came in for ages out the front. The money was short bur not by a lot and I was terrified they’d come back and say something was wrong with it! They wouldn’t meet us anywhere but our house… all a bit shady!

Isthisexpected · 16/06/2023 20:00

I'm assuming the part you don't want to emphasise is the part the police will say means they can't do anything and you're safest cutting your losses here.

ElizabethBest · 16/06/2023 20:02

For gods sake, OP, don’t answer any emails from Nigerian princes…..

Oh - solidarity.

You see, they were so so nice - but I was obviously outnumbered, and being a dope, just chatted away as one then another and then another got out of their vehicle.

They caught me at a weak moment - and I made it worse when I got the call after they had gone. Didn't want to think of him (and his son, apparently) in a blown up broken down motorhome that I was somehow responsible for. I hate to think what would have happened if I had started saying - ah but Caveat Emptor .
He actually had me write Sold as Seen on the receipt - so that was for my sake, surely, not theirs.

Yes, I would also worry if the Police (IF they know of them) did catch up with them, and retrieved my blown up motorhome..... (which I know they wouldn't as it would not be " a priority"). But maybe it should be recorded anyway.

You've been scammed by travellers. That caravan will never see Ireland and they'll just sell it on. I agree that some of them can be very intimidating 😳 I'd report this to the police.

I always thought I was quite tuned in to scams.
Not so, it seems.

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 16/06/2023 20:08

Yes, you’ve been scammed. You’re a victim of crime.

What do you want to do about it?

If the answer is nothing, that’s OK. But don’t beat yourself up about it, please.

If the answer is - actually I’m fighting mad and I want my money or property, then report it to the police.

CatLoaf · 16/06/2023 20:10

What's with the Irish obsession

It didn’t blow up, sorry to say.
It’s a very common scam
