Just a toasted sandwich for tea?

It’s hot and humid (25 degrees, humidity 50ish%)

DD aged 8 almost 9 off to her dads tonight for the weekend but she’s not going until 7pm so it’ll be bath and bed by the time she gets to his (at about 8pm).

All she wants is a ham and mozzarella toasted sandwich, if I stick some cucumber on the plate (her favourite) it’s not a bad meal is it? She has SN and the toastie maker my granddad gave me a few weeks ago is her current obsession.

I feel guilty, usually I cook from scratch especially on Fridays as I don't usually work, but I’ve been training at work so she had to have a school dinner (which she also apparently loved and now wants everyday).

To make matters worse it’s Friday and I relax screentime rules on a Friday so she’ll likely eat it while watching Disney+ on her tablet. And then will watch downloaded netflix programmes on her way to her dads house.

AIBU?

No

NameChangeSorryNotSorry · 16/06/2023 17:21

Do it. It’s Friday!

ChessieFL · 16/06/2023 17:21

Absolutely fine if that’s all she wants!

Neekoh · 16/06/2023 17:21

It's absolutely fine. Veg + fruit (if you've got any she will eat). Perfect light supper for a hot day.

FadedRed · 16/06/2023 17:21

That’s fine, better she has something you know she will eat. It’s Friday, it’s hot, we’re all tired.

mangoallergy · 16/06/2023 17:21

I don't really know what the AIBU is? Seems perfectly fine to me

Sissynova · 16/06/2023 17:22

You’ve got 8 summers in and have never given your DD a lighter dinner?

FlowersareEverything · 16/06/2023 17:22

No you’re not being unreasonable. She will be fine.

Thesearmsofmine · 16/06/2023 17:22

Sounds perfect for a hot evening. Nobody wants a heavy meal when it’s so hot.

Mrsjayy · 16/06/2023 17:22

So you would rather cook something she won't eat to relieve your guilt ? Give her the toastie with side bits she will eat and don't think anything of it. Tell her dad that's all she wanted .

Mabelface · 16/06/2023 17:22

Fine by me! I'm having wine, pizza and ice cream. It's one night.

Brollymolly · 16/06/2023 17:22

I eat so much less in weather like this. I just had a toastie for my main meal too.

WilkinsonM · 16/06/2023 17:22

This is such a non issue I am surprised you feel it's worth a mumsnet thread!
I'm not trying to be rude - why are your standards for yourself so high?

GrandTheftWalrus · 16/06/2023 17:22

If I'm not in the mood to cook I ask if they want "cheesy toast" which is a toastie and that's what they get.

However last night dd6 had 2 greggs sausage rolls for dinner.

Mrsjayy · 16/06/2023 17:23

Most kids watch .TV or tablets its not a huge deal.

Brollymolly · 16/06/2023 17:24

If you cook big meals from scratch just to relieve your own guilt - and expect her to eat it then she'll grow up with a bad relationship with food.

Which can lead to all sorts of problems.

Gowlett · 16/06/2023 17:26

DH have our kid Rice Krispies last night, while I was sick in bed. There was “no food” apparently…

ToastedSandwichLover · 16/06/2023 17:28

Thanks everyone

I do cook lighter meals but as she's going off with her dad I was worried about it. If it was next Friday when she's with me for the weekend I wouldn't have thought twice about it

DS is 5, DD is 1, they’ve been having picnic teas all week. I’ve just been picking at food in the heat so I don’t see why they should be forced to eat a full meal. They have healthy snacks too, so as long as they’re eating plenty through the day I wouldn’t worry.

I don't either.

These threads always puzzle me and make me wonder how people managed without the internet.

edwinbear · 16/06/2023 17:36

Nobody wants to eat big heavy meals in this heat, especially not if she's had a cooked meal at school. Let her have the toastie, if she's still hungry she can have some yoghurt or fruit afterwards?

wildfirewonder · 16/06/2023 17:36

I don't understand the problem? A sandwich is fine, toasted or not.

Sweetlily99 · 16/06/2023 17:36

No sounds great... mine want baked potatoes... 😩 it's getting hot in here

Kenwoodmixitup · 16/06/2023 17:37

A positive balanced meal.

To adults on a diet, it’s a feast. 😎

Yes, it's as if people have forgotten how to trust their own judgement.

Op your child isn't going to implode because she went one day without a meal cooked from scratch. It's fine. Chill.
