Just a toasted sandwich for tea?

ToastedSandwichLover · 16/06/2023 17:19

It’s hot and humid (25 degrees, humidity 50ish%)

DD aged 8 almost 9 off to her dads tonight for the weekend but she’s not going until 7pm so it’ll be bath and bed by the time she gets to his (at about 8pm).

All she wants is a ham and mozzarella toasted sandwich, if I stick some cucumber on the plate (her favourite) it’s not a bad meal is it? She has SN and the toastie maker my granddad gave me a few weeks ago is her current obsession.

I feel guilty, usually I cook from scratch especially on Fridays as I don't usually work, but I’ve been training at work so she had to have a school dinner (which she also apparently loved and now wants everyday).

To make matters worse it’s Friday and I relax screentime rules on a Friday so she’ll likely eat it while watching Disney+ on her tablet. And then will watch downloaded netflix programmes on her way to her dads house.

AIBU?

Sounds perfect I’m eating a full cooked dinner DH has cooked its rare he’s home at this time so I’m going with it

I actually don't understand this thread at all. Some people seem to think a sandwich is too much for dinner, some people seem to think it's too little. The Mumsnet disordered eating hive mind strikes again.

TinaYouFatLard · 16/06/2023 17:44

I’m never sure if it’s stealth boasting or raging insecurity that motivates these threads. Assuming it’s the latter, of course it’s okay to have a toastie for tea. Chill out, OP.

Thanks everyone

I do cook lighter meals but as she's going off with her dad I was worried about it. If it was next Friday when she's with me for the weekend I wouldn't have thought twice about it

How does going to her dad change the situation? Are you worried about the meal being unhealthy (it’s not) or are you worried about what her dad might think of it because these are two entirely unrelated issues.

SparkyBlue · 16/06/2023 17:47

Honestly OP it's perfect. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I am seriously impressed though that your DD still has a bath and early to bed routine on a Friday night. Mine go into weekend mode

Or worried she won't be fed properly at dad's.

Blueskysunflower · 16/06/2023 17:50

Are you having problems with her Dad?

Because on the face of it a light meal consisting of carbs, protein, dairy and veg is perfectly normal (especially if she’s had a school dinner at lunch) and eating in front of a screen occasionally is pretty normal for lots of people too. So I’m not sure why you’re suddenly worried because she’s going to her Dad’s - presumably if she’s suddenly hungry at bedtime he can give her a banana or a piece of toast.

Mine are having spaghetti hoops on toast without a vegetable to be seen. They’ll live.

Lannielou · 16/06/2023 17:50

Sounds like a perfect tea

LuckySantangelo35 · 16/06/2023 18:02

genuinely don’t see how anyone could think you are being unreasonable OP

Mrsjayy · 16/06/2023 18:06

Would her dad cause you grief of not "feeding " her properly Is that what your worried about?

Oblomov23 · 16/06/2023 18:06

Sounds lovely!

riotlady · 16/06/2023 18:09

Very normal tea? Wouldn’t think twice about it

GeraltsBathtub · 16/06/2023 18:11

Why would that not be fine? I’ve just had a bagel. It’s too hot to cook!

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/06/2023 18:11

There's not that much difference between her dinner and a pizza! Are you worried that your ex will slag you off for this?

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 16/06/2023 18:12

If that's what she wants, let her! It's not a terrible meal, and let's face it, when it's warm it's hard to eat much at all.

Rubycoola · 16/06/2023 18:13

I agree with @WilkinsonM

It sounds like she probably generally has a very varied and healthy diet so I can't see how one meal is an issue. Especially one that is a normal, lighter meal.

toodlesofoodles · 16/06/2023 18:14

Firstly it's absolutely fine, I often have just a sandwich for tea if I'm not particularly hungry.

Secondly don't forget she's had a school dinner, which is a lot more than she's used to eating at lunchtime so she's going to be less hungry in the evening.

Why are you worried about her dad?

anonymousetwo · 16/06/2023 18:19

Enjoy it!

FurElise · 16/06/2023 18:29

Jeez OP. My DS 9 had half of a chicken on a stick dipped in red sauce and a bag of Sour Patch Kids jelly sweets 🙈 You're winning at parenting with that toastie!

Justgorgeous · 16/06/2023 18:52

My daughter has had a bagel with cheese and a few olives every evening this week. She just didn’t fancy anything else.

PinkRiceKrispies · 16/06/2023 19:02

Perfectly fine. I've barely eaten anything today. This heat just makes me feel ill.

BeastOfBODMAS · 16/06/2023 19:10

YANBU me and DH already decided soup and a toastie for our dinner tonight and toddler had the same earlier.
She’s also had all the telly because she’s under the weather. Some days we do back to back wholesome activities and some days it’s baby shark until we’d rather die do do do do do do

Helenloveslee4eva · 16/06/2023 19:16

Yes please. Send me one

HomeboundTrain · 16/06/2023 19:17

Do you struggle with parenting generally OP? Because without wishing to sound mean, although I appreciate it probably will, I don’t know how people manage to raise children if they have to ask stuff like this? Please have confidence in your parenting. It’s bread, cheese, ham and cucumber, some children will eat this every day! You must realise that it’s absolutely fine.
