Just a toasted sandwich for tea?

ToastedSandwichLover · 16/06/2023 17:19

It’s hot and humid (25 degrees, humidity 50ish%)

DD aged 8 almost 9 off to her dads tonight for the weekend but she’s not going until 7pm so it’ll be bath and bed by the time she gets to his (at about 8pm).

All she wants is a ham and mozzarella toasted sandwich, if I stick some cucumber on the plate (her favourite) it’s not a bad meal is it? She has SN and the toastie maker my granddad gave me a few weeks ago is her current obsession.

I feel guilty, usually I cook from scratch especially on Fridays as I don't usually work, but I’ve been training at work so she had to have a school dinner (which she also apparently loved and now wants everyday).

To make matters worse it’s Friday and I relax screentime rules on a Friday so she’ll likely eat it while watching Disney+ on her tablet. And then will watch downloaded netflix programmes on her way to her dads house.

AIBU?

Holy cow ! I was bought up on school dinners back in my day and then for TEA mum would make sandwiches. No need for 2 dinners ! Relax .

chipsandpeas · 16/06/2023 22:29

fuck that i regularly have a toastie for dinner

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/06/2023 22:31

It sounds fine! If she’s still hungry, she could just have another toasty! With the cucumber sticks sounds absolutely perfect.

PinkRiceKrispies · 16/06/2023 22:32

@Jooopy That is seriously such a 'waitrose' middle class comment.
Please. It's ridiculous. It's a toastie ffs. Perfectly fine.

Catza · 16/06/2023 19:36

But she said it was going to be bed time when she arrives to dads…

Yes but when your ex is a bit shit I understand this - wanting to give them a good meal before they go in case they don’t eat well the rest of the weekend.

AuntMarch · 16/06/2023 22:35

If you are unreasonable for anything, it's for writing this in a way that makes it sound like anyone should think there's something wrong with it.

Going to probably get mauled for this but I think that’s a really lazy dinner. You’re the parent here, your child should not dictate when it comes to their health. I think I’d whip up something quickly such as a poached salmon and cous cous with sliced avocado.

Being autistic I’m so very bad at recognising sarcasm but I do hope this was it.

For what ? So her child could just turn her nose up at it? You knew you were going to get mauled so you obviously know how silly your post is .

Kanaloa · 16/06/2023 23:31

It’s a toasted sandwich. A perfectly normal light tea. Of course it’s mumsnet so you should have ‘quickly whipped up some beef Wellington’ by ‘just chucking’ this and ‘quickly popping’ that into the pan/oven. But why would you? If I want eggs on toast I don’t ‘just whip up’ homemade pizza with potato wedges. Because I want eggs!

Jooopy · 16/06/2023 23:32

No, I knew I’d get mauled for not going with the majority. My post is the sensible option. How do you know her child would turn her nose up? It’s a delicious and nutritious dinner.

Well presumably the child wants a toastie. That’s what she’s asked for. If she wanted poached salmon with cous cous and sliced avocado she would have asked for that. But she didn’t.

This may be difficult for you to comprehend, but ‘delicious’ is totally subjective. To you salmon with cous cous and avocado may be super delicious. To someone who wants a ham and cheese sandwich it may not be delicious.

Livinginaclock · 16/06/2023 23:36

I often just have a toastie for dinner, it's perfectly fine.

Daisythecat15 · 16/06/2023 23:46

When I was a kid I had issues with eating and my parents regularly let me eat honey sandwiches for tea, because it was that or I'd eat nothing. I turned out fine.

I think your daughter will be ok....

I can’t see how your post is the most sensible option . Why does there have to even be an option??? The child only wanted ham and mozzarella toasted sandwiches. Why not give them to her ? She had a school dinner already . You may like salmon, cous cous and avocado but how do you know child does ? Really !!

I like salmon, cous cous and avocado, but sometimes I want toasties!
MN food threads always attract bonkers people.

OF course YANBU. It is a perfectly valid meal.

YABU to be angsting over it.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2023 00:28

You know she’ll forget all the delicious home cooked food you lovingly craft every Friday and in a few years she’ll say “do you remember that time we had toasties for tea? It was the best tea ever!”

BitOutOfPractice · 17/06/2023 00:30

Ah now get away with yourself @Jooopy

Helpwhatwouldyoudonext · 17/06/2023 00:31

I think you're worried about what comments he might throw at you.
Would you have posted this if she was going to your sister's / mum's house?

It's taken me a few years to overcome this ( tbh, had a similar thing about her blazer tonight - she didn't take it as not worn it today - she'll need it Mon. I'm panicking - but both she and he can work this out!!! I need to step back and chill, I'm parenting them both! )

So it's a mindset that takes work, esp after coercive control.

NeverendingCircus · 17/06/2023 10:35

@Joopy - how is it an unhealthy dinner? Ham and mozzarella are good sources of protein and vitamins. The bread is useful carb for a child who has been active all day. Just add some fresh stuff and it's a well balanced dinner. Not superfoods as you suggested (which sounds bloody delicious btw!) but perfectly acceptable as a main meal on occasion, especially if it is what the child wants.

zingally · 17/06/2023 11:59

Absolutely fine!

I quite often do "things on toast" for my kids, which isn't any different. Plus people don't always want a plateful of hot food during a heatwave!
