Just a toasted sandwich for tea?

It’s hot and humid (25 degrees, humidity 50ish%)

DD aged 8 almost 9 off to her dads tonight for the weekend but she’s not going until 7pm so it’ll be bath and bed by the time she gets to his (at about 8pm).

All she wants is a ham and mozzarella toasted sandwich, if I stick some cucumber on the plate (her favourite) it’s not a bad meal is it? She has SN and the toastie maker my granddad gave me a few weeks ago is her current obsession.

I feel guilty, usually I cook from scratch especially on Fridays as I don't usually work, but I’ve been training at work so she had to have a school dinner (which she also apparently loved and now wants everyday).

To make matters worse it’s Friday and I relax screentime rules on a Friday so she’ll likely eat it while watching Disney+ on her tablet. And then will watch downloaded netflix programmes on her way to her dads house.

AIBU?

You’ve got 8 summers in and have never given your DD a lighter dinner?

This. I never understand these posters who wring their hands rugged because they 'didn't cook from scratch'🙄. One meal, even if it's 10 it's food.

thefatpotato · 16/06/2023 19:31

Granted my kids have school dinners, but they have sandwiches probably 3 night a week. Served with veg on the side, with decent fillings in the sandwich I really don't see the problem!

ThatFraggle · 16/06/2023 17:48

Or worried she won't be fed properly at dad's.

But she said it was going to be bed time when she arrives to dads…

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 16/06/2023 19:45

Sounds fine to me.

Soulstirring · 16/06/2023 19:47

She’s nearly 9.

Notesonaconditionalform · 16/06/2023 19:49

Mumsnet is weird.
why wouldnt that be ok? Guilty for giving a child a toastie??? Mine have a Toastie for dinner like once a week. In summer it's usually a sandwich and fruit.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 16/06/2023 19:54

It’s fine. Sometimes we get bored of making big dinners so we have toasties for dinner. Dds 11 and 13. They can have extra if they wish. It’s too hot too.

Caroparo52 · 16/06/2023 19:54

If this is your worst sin then you are an exemplary mum. Pat yourself on the back.
Suffered similar guilt issues, now DDs eat 100% healthily through choice.
Ps I'm having a vino blanc salad tonight

thisthenthat · 16/06/2023 19:55

I wouldn't worry about the food OP, I'd worry that you're normalising a really elevated level of anxiety and guilt.

thisthenthat · 16/06/2023 19:56

Over a sandwich.

Ragwort · 16/06/2023 20:00

Agree with others ... why on earth would you worry over this .. people Mumsnetters seem obsessed with 'proper', cooked from scratch hot meals every single night ... why? Hmm

Although my 90 year old mum was fretting that her 67 year old son (my brother) was having a sandwich for his evening meal Grin.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 16/06/2023 20:11

I don't have any idea why this is an aibu

NeverendingCircus · 16/06/2023 20:14

It's fine! I'd probably add some carrot sticks to the plate too and/or blend some frozen berries and banana into a smoothie if she likes those.

WonderingWanda · 16/06/2023 20:14

It's fine, I just made pizzas from scratch and am kicking myself that I've never thought of making tostie pizzas as a much easier and cleaner option!

And why does anyone need to ask the internet if they can give their child totally normal food?

I do wonder how some people get though the day

georgarina · 16/06/2023 20:17

I don't get it. What do you think is going to happen if she has a toastie?

AdoraBell · 16/06/2023 20:21

Nothing wrong with it OP

Buyyouflowers · 16/06/2023 20:24

MyMachineAndMe · 16/06/2023 17:38

Yes, it's as if people have forgotten how to trust their own judgement.

Op your child isn't going to implode because she went one day without a meal cooked from scratch. It's fine. Chill.

I agree. It’s odd.

Ruffpuff · 16/06/2023 20:28

chill, it’s Friday. My kid gets pizza and a lolly pop in front of the tv because why not.

Theoldwoman · 16/06/2023 20:39

I never understand why anyone needs to ask? Surely you are capable of making this decision without consulting the inter web? You child will be fed something she’s feeling like, she will be fine!

paradoxicalfrog · 16/06/2023 20:50

Goodness me! What do you think will happen if she has a ham and cheese toastie and some salad veg? She's presumably had breakfast and a school lunch. She's not going to starve for lack of a "cooked from scratch" evening meal.

"To make matters worse it’s Friday and I relax screentime rules on a Friday so she’ll likely eat it while watching Disney+ on her tablet. And then will watch downloaded netflix programmes on her way to her dads house."

Why does the watching of Disney+ while eating and then watching Netflix while travelling to her dad's make having a toasted ham and cheese sandwich "worse"?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/06/2023 21:10

We've had takeaway. kids burger meal for ds and me.Dh had a kebab.

JimnJoyce · 16/06/2023 21:31

DD and I had a toastie for dinner last night. Cheese and Tuna

Jk987 · 16/06/2023 22:07

WilkinsonM · 16/06/2023 17:22

This is such a non issue I am surprised you feel it's worth a mumsnet thread!
I'm not trying to be rude - why are your standards for yourself so high?

Jooopy · 16/06/2023 22:20

Going to probably get mauled for this but I think that’s a really lazy dinner. You’re the parent here, your child should not dictate when it comes to their health. I think I’d whip up something quickly such as a poached salmon and cous cous with sliced avocado.
