It's still language that's evolved because of technology

Text speak or gamer speak evolved because it was quicker than typing out the words
Using alternatives to "dead" or " sex" has evolved to get around filters on social media.

Either way, they both came about because of technology.

You think it's wank speak, thats OK.
in the 90s, my parents thought text speak/gamer speak was wank speak for lazy uneducated people.

In 20/30 years time we will have new technology and there will be new slang and lanuage will evolve because of that technology.
If Mumsnet is still around, no doubt there will be a whole new generation complaining on MN about the "wank speak" people are using.

fair point - and weirdly, I dont hate "Could of" which I really should (probably based on my age)

We do have loads of complaints here about D-anything

"this is not shorter or text speak, its wank speeck of people thinking they are so clever to come up with words that get through filters"

Yeah OP, you're cleverer

erm thanks?

I do get why you think its awful.

When emojis became popular and everyone starting littering thier messages with stupid smiley faces, I thought it was bloody stupid.
I hated it.

Surely you can message me and not add a ridiculous 😂- urgh

But then a friend was describing an ex boyfriend and messaged "what a 🔔🔚". And I loved it.

Now I use emoji with the best of them

Never seen "unalive". I prefer my grandsons explanation (age three) about an unalive rabbit we saw on the road side.

" Its dead. That means it's not working any more".

Wherever it’s come from it does seem to be conditioning a generation to be triggered by certain words and concepts. Language evolves, certainly, but I’m not sure these changes, with their perceived protection of the vulnerable, are going to produce resilient adults.

I fully understand why it’s happened, filters - I used to be on a poultry forum that filtered out the word cock, which was fun.

God you're miserable.

sixthvestibule · 17/06/2023 13:13

I thought it was an incel thing.

It's just to get around bots flagging and removing their content. Which has financial implications for some of the content creators.
Tbh I find it no more annoying than the abbreviations used on MN. Like DD, D's MIL. Etc

Pinkywoo · 17/06/2023 13:33

I got deleted from a wildlife identification group on Facebook recently for saying wasps were arseholes! Apparently they don't allow swearing (since when is arse a swear word?!), needless to say I left the group.

It’s because the apps detect talk of suicide etc and take your post down. So it’s a way to get around that. I mean it’s pretty obvious really.

It's only obvious if you use those apps, you may be shocked to find out not everyone is on tiktok!
