@EyelessArseFace generally not the case - you can get social media bans and timeouts for using dead and sex etc. This brought about unalive and ‘seggs’.

Groups that commonly have those words used in posts face being marked down by fb and can have restrictions placed on them.

I think it's more to do with the apps.. certain words flag up and they delete the posts etc

I've seen this on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook

Murder, death suicide and a whole host of other words are caught by antisocial usage filters, so in order to get around the filters, killers "merc" their victims, suicides "unalive" themselves or "check out"

Well it's stupid, because the apps can just add to the filters, its no hard to do

But I guess the apps like it as they can pretend they are being careful

Fb is horrible for this. I hate seeing it. Dead is a normal word. It shouldn’t be corrected

It's to get round flagging and filtering.

This. I'm seeing a fair bit of nem rather than men when saying something negative. As well as other words being jumbled up a bit to escape the filters.

The flagging is random as well which doesn't help.

Soon words won't make much sense at all.

Argh yes! Unalive I can just about understand (though it grates on me) but seggs just yeauch.
Even secs I could just about see but seggs just sounds sludgy and horrible.

I am a member of a couple of FB groups and they keep getting flagged for use of the word "men" so it has to be written "m3n" instead.

It's to avoid being censored.

It started as a euphemism for s***e because some platforms like YouTube demonetize or hide videos that mention that.

I think it's quite clever.

I've not seen it as a euphemism for death in general, just 'unalived himself' etc

As others have said, it’s due to censorship on a lot of sites although I have noticed it spill over into real life on our CAMHS unit.
If teens find it easier to say that they want to in alive themselves rather than that they want to kill themselves that’s fine, I just want them to be able to express that.

It's just modern slang as a result of new technology.

To me, it's no different then how "text speak" slang came about.

I remember my parents being cross about the destruction of language because of "r u ok", "omg" and "lol" or "I h8 u" 😁

But now it's part and parcel of everyday language. Some people still use it, some don't. I've caught my parents sending an occasional OMG.
We've just become our parents and now we are the ones complaining about this new slang.

For anyone who is under the age of 20 and doesnt know what im talking about, back in the old days when mobile phones became affordable, they were very basic. We didn't have cool mini keyboards like we do on our smart phones.
Instead only had the number key pads and each number was allocated 3 letters.
To type a SMS message, you had to keep pressing the right number until you got the letter you wanted.
It took bloody ages to write a text message.
So, text speak evolved so it would be quicker.

this is not shorter or text speak, its wank speeck of people thinking they are so clever to come up with words that get through filters

Might seem daft but if you run a group on FB and get too many dings for breaking various word filters or 'community standards' which is easy to do...

For example, mistyping 'you dog' instead of 'your dog'...

Then you can get temporarily suspended, unable to post in groups or do admin tasks etc etc, or worse!

I run or admin around 30 groups, some of which are income generating. I cannot risk losing functionality on FB because I wrote 'your bitch is dead pretty' or 'I have died of cuteness overload you twat, stop sending me puppy porn'...

Even video sound content can be monitored, I have had friends have accounts suspended, videos removed, for totally innocent commentary, that is flagged because the bots do not grasp context at all.

FB is rolling out the ability for admins to say 'no FB, this is actually ok in the context of our group' but it is slow (not in any of the groups I currently manage!)

It's still language that's evolved because of technology

Text speak or gamer speak evolved because it was quicker than typing out the words
Using alternatives to "dead" or " sex" has evolved to get around filters on social media.

Either way, they both came about because of technology.

in the 90s, my parents thought text speak/gamer speak was wank speak for lazy uneducated people.

In 20/30 years time we will have new technology and there will be new slang and lanuage will evolve because of that technology.
If Mumsnet is still around, no doubt there will be a whole new generation complaining on MN about the "wank speak" people are using.
