Nothing is touching my hayfever!

This year is mad, and I’m not functioning. Aibu to not have a clue how to cope.
lots of tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and I’m still streaming. I can barely work and I think my sinuses are a mess too now. I can’t sleep.
for the natural remedies, my neighbour keeps bees and we always have local honey.
I shower off, everything. It’s like it so systemic there’s no blip

I’m near the coast in one of most rural parts of Britain….

It's even worse in the cities

BoogieBoogieWoogie · 16/06/2023 11:27

My son (14) has been moved to fexo 180mg this year and it’s much improved on previous years

Although most people think that by riding a bicycle or by walking on the side of the road we breathe more pollution than inside a car, it is actually the opposite! The study revealed that levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were on average 21% higher inside the vehicle with the windows shut than on the road outside.

https://easyecotips.com/air-quality-inside-your-car-is-worse-than-outside/#:~:text=Although%20most%20people%20think%20that,than%20on%20the%20road%20outside.

Stop driving, as your car is making the hay fever worse, both for you inside the car and for others

I think this is because of the air conditioning.
So your car is bringing in the air that is coming out of the exhausts of the car in front.

So I usually have the air setting to recirculate the air. Especially if parked in traffic. And will try and open car windows if needed I avoid having the air setting on bringing in the air from the outside, as much as possible.

Get the injection! I’ve had it this year for the first time and it’s life changing! Hayfever used to destroy my life for a big chunk of the year as even prescription meds wouldn’t work ( I have asthma and other allergies too) but this year since I’ve had the injection I genuinely feel like my life has changed! my injection was steroid based and I honestly can’t begin to explain how much it’s helped me! It was £40 and lasts apparently up to 16-18 weeks ( depending on your body and symptoms )

Fexofenodine is available over the counter now. 120mg tablets but you can get 180mg prescribed.

Hay-fever seems so much worse this year.

Doesn't work on me, neither over the counter or prescription. I'm just as bad with it as without it

Chermeup · 16/06/2023 11:36

Desloratadine. Magic. If you can getit preacribed. You should be able to via the o line consultations with pharmacies.

firef1y · 16/06/2023 11:38

I've had to do a combination to be able to cope. Am already on up to 4x standard dose cetrizine for urticaria. Not touching the hay-fever but benadryl takes the edge off and the. When I really can't cope, fexofenodine.

MsPussinBoots · 16/06/2023 11:43

Completely agree OP, I'm on my second day off work because my eyes are so bad I can't drive. Praying for rain this weekend.

UnfortunateTypo · 16/06/2023 11:45

I bought an air filter for the house and it’s made a massive difference this year. But try changing your antihistamine, damp dust everything in the house, wipe down any animals you have when they come in from outside, keep the windows shut.

MooMooSharoo · 16/06/2023 12:19

I saw something on TikTok the other day and they said fexofenadine and a nasal irrigation were good. Plus avoiding alcohol as it has histamines in it, which flare up the allergy worse.

I suffer badly too and agree this year as one of the worst years I’ve ever experienced. Prescription strength Fexofenadine stopped working (be aware it also slows your metabolism so could lead to weight gain). Its been years since any OTC meds worked for max and nasal sprays have never worked on me. I’m having to use my inhaler multiple times a day as I’m struggling to breath. The only bit of respite I’m getting is Vics vapour rub in my nostrils - it clears my nose briefly and acts as barrier but I have to reapply every hour or so.

I’m booked to get the injection on Saturday, I’ve had enough and I’m miserable. It’s my last hope.

Ardiaei · 16/06/2023 12:31

When you say nasal sprays what are you using?

In addition to a daily antihistamine like fexofenadine or desloratadine then a steroid nasal spray used correctly (put up nose in right way) will work for the vast majority of people when built up over a few days.

mrsneate · 16/06/2023 12:38

I had the injection. Within 48 hours I was like a new women! This is the worst my Hayfever has ever been this year! X

I paid £45

007DoubleOSeven · 16/06/2023 12:39

Have you spoken to your gp?

Prescription remedies are better than otc

You could also look at an air purifier

Havingtofight · 16/06/2023 12:43

My 15 year old is on the max strength fen (120) as won't give the 180 as under 18.
Eye drops and nose drops, and still she wakes up looking like she has done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.
She can't breath through her nose either and it's making her very down.
Phoned GP this morning and was just told tough and that loads of people are suffering to and she will just have to get on with it till September.

BashfulClam · 16/06/2023 12:52

A lot of people don’t start anti histamines early enough, they must be taken before symptoms start. I have a calendar reminder for the last Sunday in March (basically the day we move the clocks) to start a daily dose. I am suffering more this year as it just seems to be super high. I feel your pain. Tablets eye drops and nasal spray and it’s still getting through.

TooBored1 · 16/06/2023 12:55

Would you consider acupuncture? I was taking huge numbers of tablets but would still take 30 mins to brush my teeth I was so bad. 6 sessions of acupuncture 8 years ago and I now have a couple days a year where I take a tablet.

Can recommend. Fexofenadine is an absolute game changer for me!

Prior to these my hayfever was awful. I would get grey jelly stuck to my eyes to the point I couldn't see properly, it was that bad. Since I've been prescribed these I don't even notice I have hayfever.

Work2live · 16/06/2023 13:18

For those who’ve had the steroid injection, where did you have it done? The closest place I can find to me is miles away (I’m in a large town!) and it costs £90+! 😬

I really sympathise, 180mg Fexofenadine does F all for me. I already take a cocktail of loratadine and cetrizine, along with a hayfever nasal spray and eye drops.

One of the only things that sort of worked for me was a steroid nasal spray prescribed by my GP. I also wear sunglasses outdoors (even when it’s not sunny), rub Vaseline around my nostrils, and use an air purifier in the house. I’m still miserable for 2-3 months of the year. It’s unbearable and the last couple of years have been particularly bad.

Blueuggboots · 16/06/2023 13:25

Please try an acupressure band. It has revolutionised my partner's hayfever. I've just recommended one to a work man who was doing stuff in my garden and let him try one and it worked for him too.

My son (14) is prescribed 180mg by the docs and just checked the leaflet and its acceptable for 12+
The advice from your doc is not good - mine advised if the 180mg isnt working she will look at referring him further

mumpower3 · 16/06/2023 13:36

My daughter suffers really bad. I tried what i could for age! I then stumbled across a balm called hay max on amazon. Its £8ish for a small pot. Texture is like vaseline. Applied under eyes and nose. She had sports day yesterday and applied it again before she did it. For the first time ever her eyes didn't go red and itchy. Her nose wasn't driving her mad!! She was fine!! 🙌🏻 🥳

Its worth a try maybe.

iholdgrudges · 16/06/2023 13:43

The only thing that worked for me is more meds - my GP prescribed up to 4 180 fexofenadene a day when needed, my sister had the injection and said it was amazing while it lasted, I think it’s definitely worth trying it at times of year you’re suffering the most tbh.

This

You need to start a steroid nasal spray with antihistamines at least 4 weeks before hayfever season starts.

So end of March
