Recently remortgaged and the massive rate rise got us thinking. Made me wonder - what is the average people owe? Yes it depends on area/value/when bought etc. But to make it simple I'd be interested in
A) how much owed
B) your age

I'll go first! We owe £115k and I'm 31.

I bought out ex-H and have a snowball’s chance in hell of paying it off (year 2 of a 20 year interest only mortgage). House worth 700k so will downsize when necessary.

Monthly payments to shortly skyrocket though.

Paid off when I was 55.
Still put the same % into savings. Just can’t get out of the habit of saving and looking for bargains.
I wanted to have a party after clearing the mortgage. But - A mortgage free party would have been insensitive.

HollaHolla · 15/06/2023 19:20

I’m 46, and bought alone. Down to the last £12k. Hoping to get it paid off in the next year or so, if I can overpay. That £600 a month extra once it’s paid off will be amazing to have!!

FragrantBumFluff · 15/06/2023 19:21

We are 30 (me) and 33 (DH) and owe £235K. House is worth £400K on paper.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 15/06/2023 19:23

About £190k

we’re 43 and 47.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 15/06/2023 19:23

Just under £230k, 44 and DH is 42. This house is forever though so doesn’t make much difference to us….

FernDaisy · 15/06/2023 19:23

50k

We are mid 40s and mid 50s

Odiebay · 15/06/2023 19:28

370k I'm 30 he's 37. Just got house a year ago. We have 35% LTV

idliketogetdownnow · 15/06/2023 19:29

£700k and we're 40. We have about £300k equity in the house at the moment, it's worth £1m. We also have about £200k tied up in a business that we could extract if we needed to.

We can manage the repayments at the moment. We plan to overpay as soon as DC are out of nursery and then downsize at some point pre-retirement.

It does stress me out sometimes but I love our house and we live in the most expensive part of the country outside London.

AdopterMum · 15/06/2023 19:40

We owed 265k 11 years ago, and nothing now. Took a lot of planning and mindful spending/saving. I made a magic spreadsheet showing how much we owed on any given day, and how much interest we were paying. I could then see this shift as we saved and overpaid (within allowances). I could also see ahead of time how much any overpayment would impact the bottom line so we could consciously decide where our money was best put.
We also saved separately in an account and paid off large chunks in between mortgage deals.
If you really want to pay it off quicker, and your prepared to make sacrifices in other areas, it is possible.

NanaRant · 15/06/2023 19:44

0 aged 52 and 55. House is worth £380k
