Wow the OP and her husband are busy people always changing careers and coming out of retirement 🤣

Next thread will be "Husband Annoyed At Birthday Gift - got DH a puppy but he's annoyed because we have a big dream holiday happening in September but have no one to look after puppy plus we both work full-time and puppy keeps shitting in house and eating things."

LifeIsPainHighness · 14/06/2023 00:43

As an aside how can anyone fancy a man who bangs on about having a ‘dream puppy’, likes he’s a 4yo child. That would give me the ick.

Aussiegirl88 · 14/06/2023 00:46

Hmmmm so weird that you can't Jeep your stories straight.

Springers are working dogs and require a lot of exercise, rain or shine. A 5 minute walk round the block isn't going to cut it. Better you than me in the middle of winter when it's blowing a gale and there's a foot of snow and your springer still wants to walk another coupe of miles.

How about going to the dog adoption centre and choosing one. Pets are not gifts

Best first comment on a thread, and the next several too. Wish I could love heart each of the comments on here.

You have a choice OP, but by buying a puppy you are perpetuating the dog breeding industry, and whether you like it or not, you are justifying purchasing animals that are treated with nothing more than profit in mind. There are thousands of dogs out there that need a loving home. Yes, you might not be able to get one from rescue due to your circumstances now, so just don't get one, now.

Is your home nice? If so, you're home will stink like piss for a while and even if you decide to lock your puppy in a cage, they'll still get opportunities to chew your shoes, sofa, furniture, letters, possibly medication (costing thousands if they aren't insured), and they'll need daily exercise, even when you don't feel up to it. You'll have to plan everything around them.

To answer your question - a bow? Definitely not a box.

Oh no you’ve upset the dog people. Run for your life.
You can only have rescue dogs!!! Did no one tell you???? You must deal with the consequences of other people being irresponsible! Just because you want a specific dog means nothing! Allergic to certain types of dog? No one cares - hold onto your inhaler and suck it up. Had no luck finding a rescue? You didn’t try hard enough?! Did you go to Bolivia and bring one back first class on your own hand made dog plane? No? Well you’re just bad!!
There are no circumstances where you are ever allowed a non rescue dog - none!
I suggest you take your puppy, change your identity and ask MI5 to make you disappear. For goodness sake make sure you come up with a fake rescue story for the puppy….!

Or maybe just stop handing over money for something that isn't a commodity?

Non-human animals should not be bred for our entertainment and pleasure.

Wolfiefan · 13/06/2023 21:54

No decent breeder would let you buy a surprise puppy for someone. They would want to meet the whole family.
In our local paper was a story of someone who did just what you’ve described. The pup died shortly after they got it home. Parvo I think.
Cancel this birthday surprise. It’s a shit idea.

No decent breeder

This does not exist. The only reason why someone would breed an animal is to make money. Therefore, they aren't decent.

Wolfiefan · 14/06/2023 05:52

@RunningUpThatMill not true. There are breeders who care deeply about their breed. They breed when they want the next generation to keep their line going. Obviously they can’t keep all pups so do sell some. But that’s not their primary reason for breeding.

Goodadvice1980 · 14/06/2023 05:55

Idiot 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/06/2023 06:01

OP if you are going to change your story so frequently, just name change. It's embarrassing.

stayathomer · 14/06/2023 06:04

LifeIsPainHighness
Thst meme is null and void now (and the least funny thing I’ve ever seen). We tried to get a rescue years ago and couldn’t, now they’re trying like hell to get dogs into any homes because of the lack of spaces because of too many dogs because of money grabbing idiots who decide their dogs should have puppies and other idiots that decide a dog is too hard and mistreat or dump their dogs

stayathomer · 14/06/2023 06:23

Yes but now with the problem we have now there’s more idiotic dog owners who think if they breed a nice breed their quick fix way to make money is a win win as it keeps a line going. Four different people over the years have said to me they think their dog is so amazing they should have puppies, one asked us could our dog father them. Um no thanks! It’s gone so far the other way that now the governments really need to regulate breeding so tightly that dog breeds don’t fade out because we’re trying not to have more dogs, while ensuring there’s not too many of them!

op I think you’re getting a hugely hard time, if you planned this together for a long time and now is the time, great. If not, the lessons everyone is trying to teach you- hopefully you or others will learn. Puppies are a life suck. They are amazing and cute and fun but they also bark and cry and jump up and eat everything around them and run at kids and scare them.. the list goes on. They need to be loved like a newborn baby and treated with constant, caring, but firm hands every day of their lives. At 11 o clock every night you will be standing outside with your dog no matter what the weather waiting for him or her to pee. First thing in the morning too. When kids come over for play dates you’ll be trying to work out how to keep the dog away because inevitably there’s someone who asks can the dog be kept away, if you have a party- ditto. When you go away for even a night you have to fork out for kennels, if you spend too long at a friend’s house or even shopping (eg ‘let’s go to x shopping centre and make a day of it!’) you have to get someone in to sit with them and afterwards they’ll be so hyper you’ll wish you never left. Oh and the pros of a dog only come about if you treat him or her the best you ever could and commit commit commit!
ps why would you ask this question on mn?!

LifeIsPainHighness · 13/06/2023 23:51

Maybe OP has a new husband. I supposed it’s very tiring to have an inconsistent husband who works then retires then goes back part time on the space of a day

😂😂😂

DarkSignOfTheMoon · 14/06/2023 06:48

Off topic - but is the word 'dream' now used for every bloody thing.

Dream house
Dream holiday
Dream puppy

What's next? Dream bed sheets? Dream mug?

DominoRules · 14/06/2023 07:13

OP I remember one of your previous threads about a springer puppy - please please reconsider. Lots of us springer owners advised you last time that whilst they are amazing dogs they need a huge amount of time training and exercising, both physically and mentally.

Have a look at spaniel aid and you’ll see how many dogs they have under 2 looking for new homes when the owners realised they couldn’t give them what they need. Don’t add to that ever growing number

It looks like she has completely ignored all of our advice and has gone ahead and done it anyway despite previously having done no research on the breed or had any clue on how to find a responsible breeder.

Whilst I will always be of the opinion that a best home for a dog is one where there is some home at home all day and I personally did not get a dog until my circumstances meant I was at home all day, some breeds can be happy to be left for a couple of hours with a walker coming in to give them exercise and attention. A springer is not one of these breeds and mine would hate being left alone everyday. They need 1.5 hours minimum walking a day otherwise will be bouncing off the walls and likely to have behaviour issues.

Op - you are a grown woman and should know better than 'me want fluffy dream puppy' with no clue how to take care of it.

In answer to the original question, put it in a box to give to your husband. Puppy will inevitably eat its way through the box and it will be OPs first lesson to do proper research and learn not give a puppy cardboard.

I had my dream mug. It was bone china and large and so beautiful. My dd broke it when she was little. I still think about that mug. 😁😁

Apart from that mug I absolutely agree with you.

Agree. When people add 'dream' in front of things on here it just makes me think of Barbie's dream house. I had no idea mumsnet was for six year old girls.

DominoRules · 14/06/2023 08:08

@Jellybebe - I often think I should of called mine Shadow as he is literally my shadow 😂 He’s 18 months and we can leave him for about 2 hours now on occasion but he’d hate being left regularly

DarkSignOfTheMoon · 14/06/2023 08:10

Fair play @Jellybebe - I'll take dram mug off and replace with 'dream tomato' Grin

DarkSignOfTheMoon · 14/06/2023 08:11

Also just seen the pup may be a springer.

Springer pups are never anyone's dream anything. (I've had a couple and known a lot). Great breed, for the right owner. But the puppies are arseholes 😁😁😁😂

😂

It was like whack-a-mole when mine was a puppy - you stop her eating one thing and off she trots to go eat whatever leaf, stone, snail, tea towel she could get hold of straight after. Relentless.

They really are lovely but a complete nightmare for anyone not prepared for it.
