To make my own wedding cake

Coffeaddict · 12/06/2023 14:29

We are getting married next year and I said I was planning on making my own wedding cake and icing it the day before the wedding. My mum has said no way its a crazy plan so mumsnet help me decide

I have made a couple of wedding cakes before for friends so I am awarenof the amount of work involved.

YABU - buy it

YANBU - make the cake you want

@Coffeaddict no it wasn't stressful. Maybe do a dry run and think about transport/reassembly but I reckon you'd be fine. As others have said, you can get it all done -1 or -2 days as cakes usually stay fresh for 3 days once iced, then that takes the heat off.

My only suggestion would be this; get super super organised so you have absolutely nothing else to do the day before so you can take your time to ice it. Also think about what the weather will be doing, if its hot or humid i doubt you'll be able to do it 2 days in advance, but in autumn or spring should be OK. Summer I'm not sure your icing wouldn't slip if you can't fit it in a fridge, well covered. You'll need time to do assemble, layer and such but I reckon with confidence and a plan b you should be OK. Good luck!!

I agree @marylou25. Hardly anyone I know likes fruit cake.

Depends what else you'll be needing to do the day before. We were decorating our venue the day before on their time scale (couldn't access until 12ish and had to be out by 5) and then having drinks with guests who'd travelled so no way I'd have had time, but if things like that aren't on the agenda for you and you're confident then why not. I might be tempted to do a full practice run first though, maybe at Christmas since cake is always popular then?

Creepyrosemary · 12/06/2023 18:32

I did but I only invited 3 people so had loads of time for preparations.

QueSyrahSyrah · 12/06/2023 18:32

Just read your update that it's at Christmas Grin

Maybe a Halloween practice then, just make black icing instead of white GrinGrin

Go for it. People barely look at the cake anyway and it’ll save you a few quid.

Shade17 · 12/06/2023 18:35

I made my mine, was a 4 tier fruit cake so was easy enough. Made the cakes 3 months beforehand and fed them. Iced a couple of days before the wedding.

Thanks all really appreciate the food for thought on here 🥰

Go for it! DH is a really good baker, people often ask him to make them cakes and I wish he was into it when we got married as he could have done ours!
