To think no contraception option is “good”?

for clarity, NC on this one because of the personal medical content

Looking into contraception options and have come to the decision they there is a downside to everything! It’s just infuriating!

  • get really bad migraines so combined pill is a no.
  • tried mini pill but it had terrible effect on mood (anxiety and depression exacerbated)
  • copper coil - can get heavier periods and have heard many a horror story, and you can just stop using it overnight if the effects are bad
  • hormonal coil - again horror stories and not easy to get a removal appointment if it doesn’t suit
  • injection - bad for migraines, weight gain, not simply reversed if you don’t get on with it
  • implant - again, hormones, weight gain, can be hard to get an appointment .. my friend that uses the same surgery as me hasn’t been able to get hers removed for nearly eight months!!!

not to mention spotting/bleeding side effects any of these can have

I know there are others but this is what my surgery currently offers

am I missing something obvious, or are they all annoyingly not ideal?

I would really like to have another baby at some point but now is not an ideal time. I’ve not long had (another) MC and think this is something we need to take off our plans for a while

but I want something that once it’s removed/stopped we can hopefully get on with ttc straight away

any positive stories/advice appreciated!!

YABU - there’s plenty of options , you just have to decide
YANBU - yeah they’re all a bit rubbish and it’s not fair having to put up with the downsides!

Agree !

Been using condoms for years and have no issues with them

The mirena coil has a lot less hormone released into your blood than the pill, I think. Obv it can cause problems for some people, but i didn’t get on with the pill and I’ve been fine with the mirena coil.

I felt the same op, then discovered the "cap" / diaphragm. It's not that popular anymore but I bloody loved mine. Wish I'd thought of it years earlier. Recommend.

@PumpkinQueen1 I read on here before that the reason the threshold for men's side effects of contraceptive pill is much higher is because there's no medical upside for a male contraceptive. Whereas the threshold for women's is much lower because the alternative is pregnancy which obvs is riskier than being not pregnant.

That's what I think. We do live in a worldwide patriarchy but not everything is a male conspiracy to oppress women.

I mastered the technique for getting it in - at first you think: "How is that ever going to go up there?" but it's easy to push it into a figure of 8 and cram it in.

And in the days before I'd heard of mooncups, it did that job too.

Spontaneity isn't that much of a problem because you can put it in hours before. But it's the spermicidal gel. Apparently it makes your lips and tongue go numb. My husband told me. He wasn't complaining, it was more of an observation.

It was the best option at the time because drugs I was on meant I couldn't use our favourite and more reliable hormonal contraception. We went back to that as soon as I could.
