To kill this spider

Nc as I have shown everyone I know this photo in an attempt to get someone to evict it.

It's living right under my kitchen window and I cannot cope with the idea that it may come into the house. No one will get close enough to move it as its massive (large snail included for scale) so I'm at the stage of considering asking my dad to come round with some fly spray and kill it.

Does anyone know what kind of spider it is, even?

Looks like a false widow maybe, we have loads around my house 😰

It isn’t a false widow (Steotoda Nobilis) they have large glossy and rounded bodies, and much shorter legs. It is a common House Spider.

MrJi · 15/06/2023 11:28

OP House Spiders tend to pretty much stay put until the Autumn when they roam around looking for a mate. As yours is outside that isn’t a worry for you.

Kill it KILL it.”

What’s wrong with people? Would you kill any animal because you didn’t like the look of it? WTAF do you think a tiny creature is going to do to you?

Spiders are crucial to our ecosystem and we would be in a sorry state without them.

Yes, OP, YABU.

I can't get close enough to kill it, I'm terrified of them. I can do rodents, I can do reptiles but not spiders. I think its the way they move. I'd much prefer to evict it but literally no one will go near it when they see the size of the fucker. Can't avoid it as I have to read the meter every few weeks.

FFS. I'd have no problem picking that up in my bare hands. It's not even as big as the snail. There must be someone around who would move it for you. You haven't asked the right people.

PietariKontio · 15/06/2023 12:09

It's true that it won't come in atm, as times are warm and prey is plentiful, but as the weather gets colder and it's thoughts turn to warmth and mating, it probably will come in somewhere. It would rather fight that snail to the death than have anything to do with you though, any direct interactions would be accidental and it would run as away as fast as its little eight legs could carry it.
If you really can't stand the thought of it, then try two things, 1) a cat (but they can be incompetent or just lazy, plus, still a little mean) or 2) search Amazon for KEPLIN Spider Catcher and you can safely rehome it somewhere it will enjoy, without having to get too close to it

FlemishHorse · 15/06/2023 12:11

It’s just a house spider.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 15/06/2023 12:13

He looks like quite a useful chap eating all those flys.
If he's stressing you out perhaps you could try using a soft bristled broom/long handled brush to gently sweep him onto the grass/patio/whatever. I became quite adapt at broom spider removal when my kids had a playhouse at the bottom of the garden. Don't stab at him tho incase the bristles hurt him.

ecdysiast2 · 15/06/2023 12:25

OP if you're anywhere near me I'll come and move it for you.

YWBVU to kill a harmless creature living its life, just because you don't like its species.

Maybe if you're not near me someone you are near will do it for you. Can you say roughly where you are?

It is not not NOT going to come in your house. It's got a roaring trade where it is.

Poppyseed14 · 15/06/2023 12:26

A can of Raid OP. The red can. I would be scared of it coming in as well.

laydownsally · 15/06/2023 12:48

DappledOliveGroves · 15/06/2023 12:53

Grow up, get a grip and go and deal with your phobia. Leave the poor spider alone.

red78hot · 15/06/2023 12:54

Absolutely hate spiders, looking at that pic sent a tingle down my head and spine. When I have to deal with them on the washing line I grab a garden cane and entice them on, or they dangle off their thread, then I catch the thread and deposit them on the grass somewhere. A beast like that I'd try and nudge away, it'll either run away and your problems sorted, OR like the fist sized one that was in the outhouse came at me like it was going to punch me in the face, I shouted OK OK you can stay !!!! 😅

Theunamedcat · 15/06/2023 12:57

Repellant on your windowsill? Honestly I've hosed a spider away before because it's too close they just moved on I find if you wash the webs away they go to a better (less disturbed) place

DRS1970 · 15/06/2023 12:58

That thing needs NUKING!!!

Isheabastard · 15/06/2023 13:11

I also believe in leaving spiders alone, but know many people are phobic.

Please may I strongly recommend you get a spider catcher online. The one with the long clear plastic tube and the blue handle sucky thing. It doesn’t hurt them and you release them outside.

They are so good and cheap, get two.

I use mine all summer long, but mostly for bees, wasps, butterflies etc that come indoors and get trapped.

The only wildlife I couldn’t use it for was when a pigeon flew in the other day. Luckily he flew out again and miraculously didn’t shit everywhere.

Balloonhearts · 11/06/2023 21:45

@MidnightMeltdown 😂 I think I'd prefer a tarantula! The RSPCA might take it away then!

Leave it alone, I have one outside too and when I go near it it runs away. You are a million times bigger than it. It has as much right to live as you and is probably better for the environment!

ReachForTheMars · 15/06/2023 13:36

Why would it even want to come into the house when it has everything it needs there?

See that snail? Be as brave as the snail.

I got over a spider phobia by choosing to find them interesting. He just wants to live his life like all.of us, leave him be.

Miri13 · 15/06/2023 15:32

Don’t kill it, it’s not doing you any harm. In fact it’s probably keeping the flow and midges out of your house.

'Tis a giant house spider, completely harmless, gentle things and will actively avoid getting in your way. Please don't kill it!

Tell that to the one that ran across my bed at me in the middle of the night when I was feeding my baby! Or the other one that ran towards me in my lounge another time that same year 😱.

I've tried making myself known to spiders to scare them off/away (stamping near them/blowing air on them) it seems to attract them more...

If it were me I would wash the spider away, sorry but can't stand the idea of them coming inside. Either get rid of them or never ever open that window again (I would probably do that but my OH would just open it instead).

TooMuchToDoAndNoTimeAtAll · 15/06/2023 15:42

One slightly bigger than that scuttled across the kitchen floor last night!! Hate the blighters!

I think some of you are being a bit mean, arachnophobia is a big thing. I'm absolutely terrified of spiders and cannot rationalise when it comes to them

Cherrysherbet · 15/06/2023 16:05

Don’t kill it. It’s a living creature and has just as much right to life as you.

Get a grip.

I'm a spider lover and I can get a bit defensive about them... but then my DP reminds me of my horrific fear of slugs and I reel it in! 😂

I am the official "ejector of all creepy crawlers here". General rule of thumb is if it fits under a glass tumbler and piece of card it gets escorted out kindly. Any bigger than that it gets whacked.
