Respect the ocean? Shark attack

bookofnotes · 09/06/2023 21:34

So I just saw the video and article about the man who was attached and killed by a shark in Egypt.

Comments were saying “you need to respect the ocean” and “he invaded the sharks home” and I just think fuck off.

Yes the ocean needs to be respected in regards to pollution, transport, fishing, disturbing habitats. But people (and any living being) are entitled to swim in the ocean.

There’s already a thread about this.

pornyshroudofturin · 09/06/2023 21:35

“Entitled to swim in the ocean”? Well yes. But by the same token sharks are entitled to eat whatever swims past. It’s not about the entitlement, it’s about understanding the risks involved in exercising it.

Debini · 09/06/2023 21:36

People are entitled to swim in the ocean, sharks are entitled to do what sharks do to people in the ocean.
What they did to that shark was disgusting.

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/06/2023 21:39

People are entitled to swim in the ocean. But if that ocean is inhabited by very large tiger sharks then at some point you have to recognise the risk and accept that what you are doing is risky.

There is an argument that the authorities in Egypt could and should be doing more to warn swimmers of the dangers. And perhaps to do more proactive watching of the beaches for shark presence during peak times.

StarDolphins · 09/06/2023 21:39

Nope. Swim at the baths or where there’s no sharks or if they feel ‘entitled’ to swim in the home of a hungry shark then they risk being eaten. YABVVU.

And be mega strict about twats who feed the fishes and encourage unnatural behaviour by doing so.

You should let the sharks know...

Generally most sharks don't attack people, we aren't their natural food source..but people can look like seals from underneath, sharks are naturally inquisitive and drawn to splashing (which most people do when they see a shark and panic). It's like going hiking where you know there are bears- you try to be respectful of the fact you're in their home space and territory. It doesn't mean you can't hike, just that you need to be mindful when you do. Killing a bear for defending is territory and possibly cubs is totally unfair, why would it be different for sharks who are just acting instinctively as nature intended.

MaryKateDanaher · 09/06/2023 21:42

They beat a fucking shark to death for basically doing what sharks do in their natural habitat. We don't have a right to enter their homes and do what we like without consequences.

Yep, but the shark will win if you decide to fight for your right to swim in their space. So I suppose you absolutely can choose to exercise your right to swim where they live, as long as you're willing to lose a leg or more.

wutheringkites · 09/06/2023 21:43

What exactly is your point? That people are entitled to swim in the sea risk free?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2023 21:44

I bet people chum for the divers in Egypt and that poor swimmer and shark was the result.

Wankers. I dive and have always refused to go with outfits who chum.

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 09/06/2023 21:45

I don't really know what you mean by people are entitled to swim in the ocean? Should the shark have been more respectful? Do you want sharks culled?

And where do you suppose sharks live?
It is incredibly sad what has happened, but he was in the ocean, where sharks live? Do you expect the shark to politely swim away? Tiger sharks are notorious for eating anything and everything. They are beast's!

JustGeorgie · 09/06/2023 21:46

Someone needs to inform the sharks of the op's little gem of wisdom!

wiffin · 09/06/2023 21:47

Does Egypt have an ocean along it's coastline? Probably missing the point of the thread.

Nobody is entitled to swim in the sea. Weird thing to say.

Poor bloke. And shocking thing to do to a shark.

RoseslnTheHospital · 09/06/2023 21:47

Yes, there should be a crackdown on people chumming nearby to these resorts. That's just madness and inviting trouble.

anythinginapinch · 09/06/2023 21:48

OP you are very very wrong. I snorkel a lot - was in Sharm in jan this year - and I always accept I could die. It's risky. Sharks live there.

Sharks don’t own the entire ocean. Regardless of risks and attacks, swimming in the ocean isn’t harmful to sea creatures.

The Red Sea is notorious for sharks. Hence why you never see locals in the sea, just tourists.

Wrong about what? Seeing as you missed my point.

My point is that people can swim in the ocean, it doesn’t harm animals.

It’s not disrespectful to swim. It’s got nothing to do risks. You can still accept the risks and “respect the ocean”

Eh?
You think a shark got the hump because a human swan in the ocean that it mistakenly thought it owned, under the false impression that the person was causing harm? Like some sort of retaliation for swimming in it's habitat? You appear to be massively humanising a fish. It was just a shark doing what sharks do.

JustGeorgie · 09/06/2023 21:55

Op....what do you actually want?
