Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

@ClaraThePigeon wowsers your comprehension is lacking. I love animals but I do eat meat, travel, swim in the sea etc..I'm not sure why having empathy for the victim & his family means I have little regard for other animals? I wouldn't want to be killed by a shark or have that happen to a loved one no matter how much I deserved it by being in their space.

How about we just stop people going in the water if there’s been a shark attack? People don’t need to be in the water, we have swimming pools 🤔

It's an area that relies very heavy on tourism, one of the big appeals and draws is the beach and by extension the sea. There's a vested interest for them to be seen doing something about damage control in regards to a shark attack, these aren't just rich companies or whatever but people just trying to make a living off of tourism as there isn't much else. Its easy to judge from afar. We treat animals appallingly here just so people can eat them, what we do to male chicks for example I find much more abhorrent than this but people happily fund it.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 20:16

I expect if it had been someone other than a Russian man some would feel differently about it let's be honest.

Nope. His nationality makes no difference to me and I didn't even know that he was Russian until about halfway through this thread but again it makes no difference. I did read on here that some are gloating because of his nationality though and I don't agree with that.

They'd best start by stopping feeding them then. And idiot tourists should stop paying for feeding sessions and demanding them.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:17

@coronabeer justify what? the way they killed the shark. A shot would be better but either way that would have had to pull it out of the sea first. Realistically they weren't going to hunt it like an animal on land plus it's unlikely they had the gun needed or the expertise. Being realistic doesn't mean you are justifying something.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 09/06/2023 20:18

@Letitrow Sharm is renowned for shark attacks. This has not been the first ad won't be the last.

Exactly there is nuance to the debate. Tourism is a double edged sword but many people in the world don't have other options.

sqirrelfriends · 09/06/2023 20:19

I just asked DH and he confirmed he would beat a shark if it ate me.

coronabeer · 09/06/2023 20:19

As a side note, I read a book once about a man who survived a bear attack in remote northern Canada. The rangers tried to find and shoot the bear afterwards, despite his protests that it was just a bear, being a bear. The author was glad that the rangers didn’t find it.

Datafan55 · 09/06/2023 20:20

If you put your mum and a shark next to each other, and you have to end the life of one, which will you chose?

Well, I'd probably tell her to stay out of the sea, just so she wasn't next to a shark. As you get them in there and all.

UndercoverCop · 09/06/2023 20:20

Haven't RTFT but DH pointed out this is exactly the storyline from Jaws, the experts knew the shark killed want the right one but it was done to calm tourists.
Poor shark. Eyewitness and local press said it was either a Mako shark or white tipped reef shark, yet it was a tiger shark they killed.

Also 3 fatal shark attacks there in 18 months, why would you go in the water?!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 09/06/2023 20:21

I’d choose the shark, my mums hurt more people.

RunningUpThatMill · 09/06/2023 20:21

ReleasetheCrackHen · 09/06/2023 18:06

It was aTiger shark and sadly once they start attacking AND eating humans, they keep coming back for more human.

It’s not much different from putting down a dangerous dog.

It's very different from putting a dangerous dog down. Not many people would advocate for beating a dangerous dog to death.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:22

I’m sure there are experts - maybe vets or marine biologists - who would be able to kill the shark with minimal suffering.

@coronabeer Realistically how many of these were hanging around at the beach? I have never said it wasn't cruel.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 20:22

I'm not seeing much concern over the very real problems that humans are causing other species including sharks, even though the resulting impact which also cause issues for humans too. Indeed judging by your idiotic remark about the shark costume you seem to think it a bit of a joke. Also I didn't say anything about deserving to die. There's a difference between accepting there are risks and saying that people deserve them.

UndercoverCop · 09/06/2023 20:22

Also, DH did once punch a seagull that attacked me while I was eating a pasty (drew blood cut my head quite badly), I thought it was to stop it attacking me again but it was to protect his own pasty

baloosbaloos · 09/06/2023 20:23

@FoodCentre I’m not “outraged”. I think it’s fucking deranged. Just absolutely off-the-planet wrongheaded. I’m fascinated! I simply can’t imagine how so many people are sincerely arriving at such a naive, perfectionist stance! 😂 Like yes, general shark conservation is a great idea, but one that’s fucking eaten someone??? What genius PR angle do the conservationists on this thread think they’ve found here???

Musing on a tangent here, but I’m also very interested to know (but not interested enough to e.g. look at user names to find out) whether this thread has attracted a very different subset of mumsnet users to the average. I tend to associate the general mood of mumsnet with a sort of diamond-hard, mean-spirited selfishness - why should you answer the door? Why should you watch people’s kids? Why should you give your friend a lift? Why should you feed your guests? Everyone is a cf! etc - and the position “it is very wicked to kill a dangerous predatory animal with a taste for human flesh” seems so diametrically opposed to that…! Fascinating. The anthropology of the internet never disappoints.

Hence I said some. Some of the posts on social media are beyond vile and many people have an unconscious bias.

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:25

@coronabeer and the rangers & park officers would have been trying to euthanise that bear because bears tend to be scared of us. Remove that fear & the worry is the bear will attack again.

Wasn't there a campaign to reintroduce bears & wolves to the countryside? Glad i'm a city girl!

troubg · 09/06/2023 20:26

@UndercoverCop wait for the cries of LTB!!

The poor creature was dragged out of the sea and literally punched/kicked to death. It will have died slowly, painfully and in utter terror. For engaging in its natural behaviour in its own habitat.

These creatures are endangered ffs. Not that it would be acceptable if they weren't! If you don't want to run the risk of being predated on by sea creatures, stay out of the fucking sea.

Well said. It's disgusting behaviour. I agree, stay away from the habitats of any creature if you don't want to be attacked by them. Wtf is wrong with humans?

SilenceOfTheGoats · 09/06/2023 20:26

I do feel sorry for the father who witnessed his son's death.

Very true! I suspect as people can say ah yes it's very bad poor shark without it actually affecting their lives or them having to do anything beyond typing it. If we started having sharks in our seas here I doubt people would say well no one should ever go in, well tough if you enter the water it's a risk you take, or find it fine to just let it go and get on with its business. As is its not really a real consideration for us but more an abstract chance to care about animal cruelty when I suspect most happily eat meat and wear animal products.
