To be angry they didn't serve me?

I am 37 first of all.
Had a thumping headache due to the heat today so went to buy some paracetamol and picked up 2 boxes. Got to the till and she said 'Sorry, but do you have ID? I just wasn't sure if you were over 18.' I told her my age and she still wouldn't let me have them. Don't drive so didn't have a license on me either.
Aibu to be annoyed? I look very young for my age but this seems ridiculous.

I got asked for ID when buying calpol the other day, I’m 30. I laughed and asked if they were joking, apparently not, but I took it as a compliment anyway.

Which is the proxy sale point I made before. Calpol is for children. So clearly you are buying it for children. So why on earth do you need ID to prove you are old enough to buy it!

bettytaghetti · 09/06/2023 11:51

Totally agree with you! And surely no-one can be sacked for not checking a 23 year old's ID even if they were buying an age restricted item, since the cashier thought they looked over 25? Surely that's the whole point of Challenge 25?

Yes, otherwise it would become Challenge 35 in case someone was 24 but looked 30!

Odile13 · 08/06/2023 19:23

To be honest - when I worked in a shop I asked a woman for proof of her age when she was buying scissors (the message flashed up on the till). She was clearly annoyed at me but showed her driving license and she was in her 30s. I felt embarrassed but it was drummed into me to ask if I was unsure as you can get sacked if you make a mistake. It wasn’t done with any malice.

My son did some mystery shopping last year - when he was 19 (and he did get asked for ID every time). I'd think it ridiculous if the companies concerned used 29 year olds who might look 24. I don't think they do as DS had to send them a video to show them how young he looked.

I don't see how you can get sacked for not asking someone to show ID if they turn out to be over 18, never mind over 25. I also wonder if it has actually happened. It would be interesting to see how it would play out in an employment tribunal.

"Our case is: we sent a 29 year old into a shop who WE think looks 24 and our member of staff didn't ask for ID because HE thought she looked, well, 29. So we sacked him because he should have thought she looked 24."

Good luck with that. The whole set-up is ridiculously subjective and just leads to conflict.

lieselotte · 09/06/2023 16:38

The other thing that really annoys me is when supermarkets employ under 18s on the tills so they always have to call someone over to approve the sale. Either employ over 18s or have designated tills for age-restricted items.

My local Waitrose used to have 16 year olds on the cigarette/lottery counter. Completely stupid.

Mothershit · 09/06/2023 18:13

It's a long time since I had such a massive compliment, but aside from whether it is challenge 25, challenge 18, whatever...

I'm in favour of not selling multiple packs of paracetamol to anyone.

The maximum dose for adults would be 2 x 500mg tablets at a time up to 4 times in 24 hours to a maximum of 8.

You can usually get a pack of 16, so that's maximum dose for 48 hours... at a minimum....

Paracetamol poisoning from overdose however is bloody awful. Just a few over the recommended dose can cause potentially fatal liver damage and there maybe no symptoms until it is too late for treatment to help. So I support limiting how much can be purchased in one go.

Take the compliment and the inconvenience.

PrimoPiatti · 09/06/2023 18:14

She was wrong:

  • Customers must be aged 16 or over to purchase the following: Health Lottery tickets and the paying out of prizes
  • Medicines for pain relief (including aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen and any products containing these products, e.g. Lempsip, adult Bonjela etc.) These items will be sold at a maximum of 2 packets or 32 tables per customer
  • High caffeine tablets
  • Party poppers and similar (including indoor fireworks, cracker snaps and throwdowns)
  • Petrol (including Diesel and LPG)
  • High caffeine energy drinks
CrazyLadie · 09/06/2023 18:21

Needmorelego · 08/06/2023 18:17

@Bananaspliff paracetamol you do have to be 16 to buy. Ibroprofen apparently there isn’t an age restriction. Remember that next time @PinkRiceKrispies - get ibroprofen instead.

It's any pain medication can not be sold to under 16, even lemsip etc

Sigh

Most of that is shop policy. NOT the law

Needmorelego · 09/06/2023 18:26

@CrazyLadie I wasn’t sure about the rules for ibuprofen. I bought some using the self service till in Wilko and it didn’t ask for age authorisation (paracetamol the till does).
I pointed it out to a staff member that the machine hadn’t done it but she said it didn’t apply to ibuprofen.
So I really don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️

JustAnotherManicMomday · 09/06/2023 18:29

It's think 25 for a reason not think 18. That's because too many people under 18 may look 18 so they set it as a buffer. If they think you look under 25 but over 18 they still have to ask. The person serving faces an unlimited fine or 2 years in prison if your underage and they serve you.

OK, technically you are correct. Yes, there are no legal age restrictions for buying medicine. However, retail outlets have their own guidelines. The one I quoted was The Co-op, and most other outlets also set the bar at sixteen. So I still think she was wrong.

Shudahaddogs · 09/06/2023 18:43

Bananaspliff · 08/06/2023 18:13

YANBU. There is no legal age restriction on buying paracetamol.

Wrong

rainbow · 09/06/2023 18:46

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are on the challenge 25 list. OP it doesn't matter if you look over 18, we cannot sell you anything without ID unless we believe you to be over 25. Our jobs are on the line.

SeeingSpots · 09/06/2023 18:48

Shudahaddogs · 09/06/2023 18:43

Wrong

She's not wrong though. There isn't a set age in law for purchasing paracetamol just the arbitrary age some stores seem to have put on it to lump it with other medicines or age restricted products.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 09/06/2023 18:49

Bananaspliff · 08/06/2023 18:13

YANBU. There is no legal age restriction on buying paracetamol.

I’m sure there is, but also there’s a limit to the amount of tablets you can buy.

MagsterMum · 09/06/2023 18:52

37 here and couldn't buy Calpol....I have since gotten over it but my rage at the time was off the chart haha

Forgot to add, you have to be 16 to purchase this....!!! So I can have sex, give birth to a child, but can't buy that poorly child medicine.

csigeek · 09/06/2023 18:58

The person serving you is personally liable for a fine of you are underage and they are caught serving you. It’s irritating but I don’t blame them if you look young because they are probably on or barely over minimum wage and would never be able to afford to pay a fine like that.

SaponificationQueen · 09/06/2023 19:06

PinkRiceKrispies · 08/06/2023 18:10

A 37 year old can not look 18 however hard they try.

Actually I knew a woman who was 38 who was carded all the time. She didn’t have a drivers license so there was only one bar she could have a drink at because they knew her really well and knew she had kids that were almost adults.

EbonyRaven · 09/06/2023 19:09

RunningUpThatMill · 09/06/2023 00:56

@EbonyRaven you clearly haven't seen the images of Madonna recently. She looks like a teen. She's well into her 60s.

😂 That is a joke right?!

ArgosKettle · 09/06/2023 19:12

Its the law and also part of their job so I don't think its ridiculous.

Also, I don't know how you look but I know women who are well into their 30's who look 18...speak for yourself.

Blueink · 09/06/2023 19:13

As PP have said, it's their store policy to do an ID check based on you looking under 25

You said you do look under 25 so annoying but not unreasonable

I wonder if them applying this was influenced by you trying to buy 2 packets as well

ArgosKettle · 09/06/2023 19:14

@RunningUpThatMill I don't know a SINGLE 'teen' who looks like THIS. Not one. This is clearly a 55+ woman with some seriously ropey fillers and collagen. Scary thing is, Madge thinks she looks good. Shock
