Paid £400 for a 3 day trip to a theme park, with a themed room, paid the extra £25 for cancellation protection up to 48 hours beforehand. 36 odd hours before we are due to leave my 4 year old has a blazing temperature. I'm a lone parent who has saved up to take him as he's been desperate to go for the past year. Just wanted one surprise trip away before we were tied to school holidays. Theme park refusing to let me go a different day which I can't argue as it is in the terms and conditions. I could CRY right now I'm so gutted. Son is fine, negative for covid, lots of colds going round and he is prone to a high temp whenever he has a virus. Just wanted to do one nice thing and it's looking like I'm just going to have to sack it off. What are the chances of a high fever being gone in 36 hours?

Does he actually feel unwell? Does it go down with Calpol?

Namechangeforthis88 · 05/06/2023 21:41

Don't want to give you false hope but they can bounce back fast at that age. If you can't get your money back it would be worth going even you had shorter, quieter days. He might pick up over the three days.

Rtmhwales · 05/06/2023 21:43

DS can burn a high fever, vomit repeatedly and it be like it never happened 6 hours later. Lots of sleep, rest and a dose of Calpol between now and then with your fingers crossed.

He fell asleep at 6pm (bedtime usually 8) and he's moaning in his sleep but I only took his temp once he had fallen asleep. He went to his regular club after nursery and seemed totally fine. Running around like a nutter. Hard to tell how he's feeling now as he is sound asleep.

I just worry as I live in the middle of nowhere and it's a 4 hour drive.

Everything crossed. Though every single time he's had a temp in the past it's lasted no less than 4 or 5 days.

Is he ill, ill, or just feverish? My kids sometimes had raging fevers but felt fine in themselves. Other times they had a mild fever but felt really poorly. I'd go by how he's feeling, not what the thermometer says.

Oysterbabe · 05/06/2023 21:45

I think there's a pretty good chance he'll be OK in 36 hours.

Mum2jenny · 05/06/2023 21:45

I’d just go and dose him with both ibuprofen and paracetamol

Dragonsandcats · 05/06/2023 21:45

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was over it in 24 hours. Fingers crossed 🤞

Testina · 05/06/2023 21:45

Kids that age get sick and bounce back next day or one after all the time.
You’ve got 36 hours plus it’s a 3 day trip, so you could well be fine for all or at least some of it 🤞
No travel insurance? Possibly with bank account?

Gymmum82 · 05/06/2023 21:47

I’d go and dose him every 4 hours with paracetamol and ibuprofen. They get random temperatures all the time at that age but are fine inbetween times and usually go very quickly

In a 4 year old.....quite high in my experience! Kids that age come down very fast with bugs but they also recover quite suddenly too. I feel for you, I really hope he's up to the trip. I do think the chances are in your favour tbh.

I think I'm just worrying as every time he's had a fever in the past I've nearly ended up at the docs as they go on for so long.

I'm hopeful he'll bounce back with lots of rest and some Calpol!

Fingers, toes, and kidneys crossed you'll get to go on your hard=earned trip OP ❤

MAREMCKENNA · 05/06/2023 21:52

Why the f didn't I get travel insurance??! 😭 I don't know why I just didn't think to for a theme park trip in the UK.

might you have travel insurance attached to a bank account or similar?

Dacadactyl · 05/06/2023 21:55

I'd he's not actually seeming unwell when he's awake, I'd still go tbh.

ltappleby · 05/06/2023 21:56

I would still go unless he will actually be too ill enjoy it.

I don't think so. I just have a fixed rate savings account and a current account. Never seen anything re insurance.

Ibuprofen and paracetamol help reduce the symptoms, if you want to give his immune system a boost to see it off asap give him vitamin c + zinc. The +zinc is key as it increases the uptake and efficacy of the vit c... So his immune system will be better able to get the better of whatever it is.
Crush the tablet into a drink if he's not good at taking tablet or you can't find the sweet chewy ones for kids.
I always give my kids one of she show a hint of illness and it makes a difference.

I guess I will have a rough idea in the morning or throughout the night how unwell he is. Just praying no vomit!

Fingers crossed for you OP - mine used to bounce back crazy quickly at that age usually about 3hrs after they'd been kicked out of nursery for temperature while I was trying to wfh
Tbh I'd be tempted to go anyway - sleep it off in the car & excitement of seeing it might just get you through & worse case you chill in hotel room & get room service.
We've stayed at Legoland & Chessington and they were both ace!

He has multivitamins with vit d and zinc every day so hopefully that bit is covered!
