Paid £400 for a 3 day trip to a theme park, with a themed room, paid the extra £25 for cancellation protection up to 48 hours beforehand. 36 odd hours before we are due to leave my 4 year old has a blazing temperature. I'm a lone parent who has saved up to take him as he's been desperate to go for the past year. Just wanted one surprise trip away before we were tied to school holidays. Theme park refusing to let me go a different day which I can't argue as it is in the terms and conditions. I could CRY right now I'm so gutted. Son is fine, negative for covid, lots of colds going round and he is prone to a high temp whenever he has a virus. Just wanted to do one nice thing and it's looking like I'm just going to have to sack it off. What are the chances of a high fever being gone in 36 hours?

Take him anyway and he might be ok for Day 2 and 3?

ChatWTF · 05/06/2023 22:03

50/50 based on my experience. Never forget DD having a v high temp, seeming lethargic and DH panicking. Ended up calling the GP for an appt (years ago when you could get them!). Got their last appt of the day and she was like a happy little circus performer in the space of 6 hours. Luckily the GP gave a once over and was just like 🤔 well she seems ok now so just keep an eye 😂

Fingers crossed for you 🤞

Fingers crossed for you and the little guy!

Oh no, sod's law isn't it?? I would like to add my voice to the chorus of just go! You've paid the money whether you go or not, so you might as well go and get something out of it, even if less than you'd aimed for, than stay at home and miss out entirely (with a child who will then probably make an instant, full recovery!)

FWIW, my 2yo was really grumpy at a playgroup a couple of months ago. Went down for a nap, woke him up, still grumpy and lethargic. Checked his temperature, 39.4°!!! Calpol administered and back to sleep he went on my lap for another two hours, whilst I sorted work stuff in anticipation of needing the day off the next day. When DH and big bro got home, 2yo stirred, stood up on my lap, raised his arms in the air, roared in delight and... was absolutely fine🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️😂😂😂

I feel you on this!!! Mine usually promptly develop the skills I am worried they are lacking, during the actual appointment about it😂😂😂

I’ve had nights where I’ve been sick with worry over fevers and rashes and redness and been on to 111 and in the morning they’re as right as rain and running around like lunatics.

Pretty good at that age.

Agree with people who say dose up on Calpol and rest. They do often get blazing temperatures that go down fast. I hope you can still get your break.

Hairbrushhandle · 05/06/2023 22:17

Go but take an umbrella stroller in case he can't do all the walking

ThanksAntsThants23 · 05/06/2023 22:19

I’d go but be prepared for him to be more tired than usual, pack
olenty of calpol and ibuprofen and as pp said take a stroller if you can.

Tanktanktank · 05/06/2023 22:21

DGC 4.5 had a temperature last night. Woke with a sore throat this morning so was kept off school. Given a dose of calpol, within half an hour we were wondering why they weren’t at school.

I’d go personally.

Fandabedodgy · 05/06/2023 22:21

Kids bounce back really quickly. 36 hours is long time away.

Fingers crossed for
You.

Any chance you paid by credit card? There is often insurance attached.

Createausername1970 · 05/06/2023 22:25

We live about a 5 minute walk from school. We could see it from our front door. DS aged 5 came out of school seemingly ok, but by the time we got home 5 mins later he was literally crawling. He looked and felt hot and clammy. Gave him Calpol and suggested a snuggle in bed before dinner. That was about 3.30. He slept till about 10.00. Had some toast, a drink and more Calpol and went back to sleep.
I assumed he was going to be off school the next day, so didn't set alarm. He came bouncing in to my bedroom at 8.30 wanting to know why I wasn't getting up!

He went to school a bit late.

There is always hope OP 👍

murasaki · 05/06/2023 22:29

Calpol and he may well perk up when he's excited to be there. I'd go.

Debit card? PayPal?

originalglazedsingle · 05/06/2023 22:34

You have plenty of time. See how he is tomorrow for a start.

Have you still got a stroller, or can you borrow one? Even if he's a bit tired on the first day, you can still push him around.

I've never had a stroller but I'm sure I could borrow one

Debit card? PayPal?

what I meant was how dangerous it is to use a debit card online as opposed to a credit.

I think you’ve got a good chance tbh. I’ve also found that the older mine get the less a fever seems to knock them out. My youngest was awful for needing to go into hospital when she was younger as she really didn’t manage fever very well. Touch wood, her being sick at 4 seems to be very different to her being feverish as a smaller infant/toddler.
