Paid £400 for a 3 day trip to a theme park, with a themed room, paid the extra £25 for cancellation protection up to 48 hours beforehand. 36 odd hours before we are due to leave my 4 year old has a blazing temperature. I'm a lone parent who has saved up to take him as he's been desperate to go for the past year. Just wanted one surprise trip away before we were tied to school holidays. Theme park refusing to let me go a different day which I can't argue as it is in the terms and conditions. I could CRY right now I'm so gutted. Son is fine, negative for covid, lots of colds going round and he is prone to a high temp whenever he has a virus. Just wanted to do one nice thing and it's looking like I'm just going to have to sack it off. What are the chances of a high fever being gone in 36 hours?

So he's acting fine and running round like a looper.....why take his temp?? Crack on with your trip

No that's what he was like when we got home earlier in the afternoon. Then he sat on the sofa and went a bit quiet, fell asleep on the sofa way before his bed time and when I picked him up he felt boiling boiling hot so I took his temp.

How do you have a 4 year old, live in the middle of nowhere, have a car but never used a pram?

I just always used a carrier and still do now. Maybe a cultural thing who knows, it's just how my mum did it and when she told me I didn't need a pram and to wait until I decided I wanted one, I took her word and she was right.

My son was burning up one evening at bedtime recently, off school the next day, much better by dinner time, back to school the following day, completely fine. Fingers crossed yours will do the same

Cocopogo · 05/06/2023 23:20

You use a carrier for a four year old?

AppleWax · 05/06/2023 23:25

Check for new teeth popping through. My children always had a high temp, snotty cold just like when they were babies and teething.

HerculesMulligan · 05/06/2023 23:26

Why not? I have a very slight child (and I’m a sturdy girl) and I could easily have carried my 4yo. I carried him around a zoo at 8 when he’d had a nasty fall. I swear he has hollow bones like an owl.

Thatsridiculous · 05/06/2023 23:33

I think there is a really good chance he will
be ok OP. Alternate calpol and ibuprofen and give him plenty of fluids.

Unless he desperately unwell I would give it a go.

Hope he bounces back in the morning!

p.s I’ve not got a credit card and shop online constantly. As do millions of people

Yoloohno · 05/06/2023 23:33

I’d travel even if I spent more time indoors than I was planning as long as it’s not contagious. You’d be kicking yourself if they’re ok by day 2.

it’s a break for you even if dc is ill. You can have someone clean and I’m assuming you were having meals out. Things you would do at home.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 05/06/2023 23:44

Surely the holiday location would have better access to a medical person nearby than you would if you live remotely.
You still have time for him to improve. Holidays are for rest and relaxation.
Stock up on Calpol... and try to get temp down by sponging with tepid water...on hot days we used to have an Evian spray (no aircon in the car) which helped the LO's cool on the journey.
If he's prone to high temps lasting several days see your GP about it next chance you get.
Crossing fingers that you get to go on your trip.

fairywhale · 05/06/2023 23:50

Fever isn't a reliable indication of how well or unwell a child is, in young children.
Do you not go to work if you have a temperature?

I might have read it wrong but I think op indicated he was lethargic and quiet with a fever

Karmakamelion · 06/06/2023 00:18

Its not too late to get insurance....

ExamStres · 06/06/2023 00:19

Hope he’s well enough to enjoy it

Wallabyone · 06/06/2023 00:27

I hope he's better by tomorrow op x
Last week, I was lit with my perfectly well four year old. Within two hours he was burning up and cuddled almost asleep on me. He (as always) refused calpol when home, so I have him a light dinner and put him to bed. The next morning, he was ok-like nothing had happened!

To the person asking if OP carries her four year old-she never said she did! I used a buggy for mine until he was about 2.5 and then he walked everywhere and we only took it on holiday. It's perfectly feasible to use a carrier instead of a pram until they want to walk.

Clarefromwork · 06/06/2023 00:42

Get a credit card and buy a stroller right now!

just kidding, hope he’s ok and you get to go :)

DFWM · 06/06/2023 00:49

My son can get out of control fevers for a cold. Paracetamol and ibuprofen have never really helped to get his temperature under control. The only thing I have found that works with him is fluids. Plenty of cold drinks, ice lollies, anything you can get down him and his temperature soon comes down.

I hope he is OK and you are able to go on your trip.

Toxicityofourcity · 06/06/2023 00:52

Mum2jenny · 05/06/2023 21:45

I’d just go and dose him with both ibuprofen and paracetamol

Ibuprofen and paracetamol for sure, I find Calpol isn't as effective with temperatures at all... fingers crossed for you OP x

LadyJ2023 · 06/06/2023 00:59

Your not the only one it sucks. We had a holiday cottage booked last month for 2 weeks off we went and on day 3 1 kid went down with temp, being sick and by day 5 all 4 were extremely ill by day 7 we had to return home because they were so ill being sick. 3 got antibiotics as ended up being bronchitis so our holiday this year was a total waste and disaster

Nanaof1 · 06/06/2023 03:25

We've been to Disney twice. The first time, I ended up with a kidney infection. Talked my family into going to watch the parade and fireworks and when they left, I took a cab to the urgent care center. I was so ill they wanted me in the hospital, but I had to get back to the hotel before they got home. It was before cell phones(by several years). The meds worked and after one more day down, I was better enough to go and enjoy myself (just slower than usual).
The second time, I had a sore throat. Thought nothing of it and by day four, had trouble swallowing anything. Back to the urgent care and had strep. Last time I had strep was 1976, 35 years prior.
Don't think I will try for the trifecta.

I hope, hope, hope he feels better. If not, I'd still go. If one is going to be ill, might as well be somewhere nice. Besides, he could be better at any time.

Make sure you practice folding the pram. They are all different! Last thing you want is to take it and then find you can’t fold it to get it up to the hotel room or into the boot of the car…

MrsRickAstley · 06/06/2023 04:04

Is it a pram or pushchair ?

DeflatedAgain · 06/06/2023 04:34

If they won't refund you, you can try to do a chargeback through your bank. It's called a VISA dispute, if it's a VISA debit card. Other card issuers will have a similar process.

I emphasize, absolutely no guarantees at all - but worth speaking with your bank to see if they can run through the criteria with you.

hope you're son gets better and you have a fab time!

You use a carrier for a four year old?

I imagine the four year old walks, and the carrier was for much younger. We've not used a pram or carrier since just before DD turned 3.

LemonjeIIo · 06/06/2023 07:03

How is he today??

Blueey · 06/06/2023 07:04

I think whether or not you go needs to be based on how ill he seems, not his temperature. If he is a child who runs a temperature for a few days but seems otherwise well then I wouldn't cancel.

What was his temperature?

Sorry your thread got derailed by people lecturing you about credit cards. I have experience fraud on my debit card and the bank refunded.
